Happy 2013!

HAPPY NEW YEAR! … too cliché? … heard it enough already?

Well, customs and traditions aside, what would make YOUR New Year truly “happy”?

I pondered that as companion and I marveled at the incompetency of Congress (both parties) the past few days. Definitely proves you can be smart AND an ineffective leader at the same time. I decided to put politicians out of my mind as they fumble along trying to decide which families will have their paychecks decreased in 2013 – and enjoy the season in spite of them – have my own Fiscal Cliff Party!

Seriously, I started thinking what would make my 2013 happy and jotted down a few things:

·         Aardwolf Pub & Brewery opening – a labor of love for Michael Payne and Preben Olsen – a great addition to the Jacksonville Brews & Chews scene
·         Sun Dog Brewing Co. – beginning to brew and sell their own creations
·         Bold City Brewing Company – an expansion of distribution up the East Coast and throughout Florida
·         Intuition Ale Works – success in locating an additional facility
·         Pinglehead Brewing Company – brewing another batch of something special with them
·         Engine 15 Brewing Company – me getting over there much more often for great beer and food
·         Green Room Brewing – success in being able to have food trucks out back
·         Mile Marker Brewing – brewing another batch of something with them, as well
·         Pensacola Bay Brewing Company – brewing a batch with them and starting a Bottle Sharing group there
·         Kickbacks Gastropub – completing its expansion

Well, you can see where my mind is … honest thoughts though, nonetheless …

If “craft beer” is a focal point for you, please stay tuned for updates regarding the items noted above – and keep in mind all are invited to participate in the Bottle Sharing get-togethers at Green Room Brewing on Saturdays (currently scheduled at 2:00 pm) and at Brewer's Pizza on Sundays (also currently scheduled at 2:00 pm).

There is no cost for attending – other than we ask you bring a bomber or two smaller bottles (or cans) of craft beer  and/ or homebrew AND be willing to buy a pint of something from Green Room  and Brewer's Pizza while you are there. The establishments are kind enough to provide the space and sampling glasses. The craft beer you bring does NOT have to be expensive – just something you like or want to try and share with the group.

I maintain a database of e-mail addresses of those wishing to be kept informed of the next Bottle Sharing get-together since some days we may decide not to hold the Sharing or alter the time. If you are interested, please send me a note with your e-mail address indicating which list (Green Room, Brewer's Pizza or both) you prefer to regina@jaxbrewbitch.com

I'm receiving notifications of upcoming beer events in 2013, so my 2013 is starting off very nicely – and I hope yours is, as well.

To all of you who may be reading, I thank you for the motivation you so kindly provide with your support. It certainly means a great deal to me – and I look forward to getting going in 2013 – self-indulgently on my Jax Brew Bitch Prowls - for YOU.

With nary a thought about the Congressional Record, I wish you all a very successful and Happy New Year!

Oktoberfest 2012 at Engine 15 Brewing Co.

Little Bella
It was tempting to stay in yesterday (Oct 6). A late night the evening before working on the computer after we got home from a quick Prowl and being snuggled into our comfortable bed with just the right mixture of air-conditioning and blanket – you know how it is – combined to dissuade me from opening my eyes as the morning dawned.

Companion was cautiously trying to awaken me and by the muted light coming from around the bedroom's curtains, I could tell he had been up for awhile. (How does he do it? - always getting up early – like a farmer ready to attack his chores – but we don't even have a cow – well anymore, at least – and the one we DID have was a Holstein steer – so companion had no milking responsibilities.)

He was quietly inquiring what I wanted for breakfast. My subconscious being was yearning to be back in my interrupted dream where I was helping Xena, Warrior Princess conquer foes after convincing her she would be much more intimidating and effective if she wore stiletto-heeled warrior boots. (Go ahead, picture it ...guys, you ... are ... welcome ...)

I weighed my options – either being a wardrobe-focused Gabrielle in fantasy land – OR - scrambled eggs with fajita-spiced onions and peppers with buttered jelly toast lovingly served in bed. Breakfast won out – Xena would have to fend and accessorize for herself.

One Step Ahead of the Law ... they're right behind me
Early morning hunger was not the sole motivating force behind my awakening, however. This day was Oktoberfest at Engine 15 Brewing Company (1500 Beach Boulevard – Jax Beach – 904.249.2337) … besides being able to enjoy some German-style beer, Engine 15 was also offering Oktoberfest-themed food! … also, the King of Oktoberfest would be crowned that afternoon and I wanted to be there. I had been urging folks to “Vote for Herb” and I was hoping he would be victorious.

Driving over on Beach Boulevard, it was obvious there had been more rain over by the beach than we received at our house. I was considering placing a call to make sure festivities were not being postponed – since we knew some activities would be staged outdoors – but I decided we still wanted to visit Engine 15 regardless.

Mark and Kathy Corbin
Pulling into the parking lot, I noticed there was some spaces available and we were able to settle The Beast into a slot not too far away. As we entered, it was apparent we would be able to find a seat without any problem but I knew the crowd would be increasing as the afternoon wore on.

I was delighted to see Mark and Kathy Corbin seated right beside the front door and they were kind enough to share their table with us. The Corbins explained we could purchase a large Maßkrug (Maß as abbreviated) – the Bavarian word for a “mug of beer” - holding exactly 1 liter of brew … one … LITER? … hello, Oktoberfest!

Ed and Jonathan Stansel, prosting!
Companion suggested I make the selection of German beer of which to fill our Maß – so I chose Hofbrau as my first German beer of choice.

All at our table were happy to see Ed Stansel and son Jonathan enter the premises and join us for awhile. As you are probably aware, Ed is an Editorial Systems Editor for the Florida Times Union and he and Roger Bull collaborate to produce Amber Waves for Florida Times Union www.jacksonville.com. He and Jonathan brought their own Maßkrüge which they had purchased last year at Engine 15's Oktoberfest. Quite the Boy Scouts! … always prepared!

Polkin' out!
After sitting there watching the band One Step Ahead of the Law perform for the crowd, I ventured to the bar to confirm I would go about acquiring some of the German food available. The band was about to start a polka and one of the band members stepped forward, offering to show me how to polka. I did my best not to step on his toes and I came away from the lesson noting to myself to stick with my day job.

The food was delicious! … all I had to do is prepay for what I wanted and I wasted no time selecting:

·         Sauerkraut
·         Bratwurst
·         hendl (chicken)
·         spaetzle (mac & cheese)

Feeling enlivened by the crowd, food …. and beer … I decided to try my hand – or rather, arm – in the Feasts of Strength, This competition pitted seasoned beer-drinkers against one another holding a  Maß full of water at arm's length and shoulder height. After a minute or so, I realized I would rather be drinking, so I gracefully bowed out. Okay, okay - I quit 'cause my arm hurt.

Co-owner Luch Scremin announced the crowning of the Oktoberfest King would occur soon, so I secured a spot where I could see everything – on top of the bench on which I had been sitting.

and the winner is ....
All of the nominees were soon presented before the crowd and I had my fingers crossed for Herb. Luch is quite adept at raising the suspense around the election results and I was very anxious to find out who won.

As Luch shouted the winner's name – HERB! - I was overjoyed for him and his lovely wife, Nona! … they are so popular at Engine 15, such loyal patrons of the establishment and a couple we are honored to know. Companion says they are “good people” which carries a significance much deeper than those two words – and I agree.

"Herb" King of Oktoberfest!
... of course!
The liter of Hofbrau I had been drinking apparently evaporated since when I looked after congratulating Herb and Nona, there was nothing left in my  Maß … what? … of course beer evaporates in an air-conditioned environment … yes, it does, too … you don't think I consumed the entire liter, do you? … companion had his own pint of Engine 15's 904 Weiss Guy, so he wasn't drinking mine – so, that proves it evaporated. Just ask the Corbins, Ed or Jonathan - well, maybe not them – they were too busy listening to the band.

Our afternoon at Engine 15  was dwindling down like the volume of Spaten in my second filling of my Maß. Oktoberfest at Engine 15 had been a tremendous success and I had a great time of fellowship with the Corbin's, Ed Stansel and his son, Jonathan.

Ed and Jonathan soon bid us farewell and not too much later, we said goodbye to Herb and Nona, the Corbin's, Luch Scremin and the rest of the gang at Engine 15 brewing Company.

Feasts of Strength ... next year I've got this!
Congratulations to Engine 15 for another fantastic Oktoberfest and a heartfelt thank you for being so consistent in delivering first rate experiences for your customers. That is why Engine 15 brewing Company will continue to be a regular stop on future Jax Brew Bitch Prowls.

Engine 15 Brewing Company

Bold City Brewery Duke's Cold
Nose Brown Ale
Heading back home, I suggested we stop in at Bold City Brewery (2670 Rosselle St  - 904.379-6551) to say hello and have a beer, of course.

The parking lot was rather full, so companion dropped me off in front and drove off to secure a parking spot. Inside was busy but not excessively crowded.

When companion made his way to the bar where I was seated, we ordered (descriptions per Bold City's website):

Bold City Brewery Duke's Cold Nose Brown Ale
This is a mild brown ale which is easily drinkable. A slight nuttiness and sweetness are present. Note: 7% ABV

Bold City Brewery 1901 Red Ale
This is not your standard Red Ale. This is a very ‘malty’, ‘roasty’ and complex Red Ale. The roasted flavor comes from the high presence of roasted barley. With a very minimal but high alpha hop addition, this Red Ale has become a favorite among patrons.

I was starving, so companion jumped outside to get us a pulled-pork sandwich with beans and slaw, prepared ever so deliciously by Vernon of Jolly Mon Catering (904.349.2473).

What a wonderful way to end the day – in the midst of great beer, great folks and great food. My sincere appreciation to the Millers and the rest of the staff there at Bold City Brewery for their dedication to our community and for maintaining an atmosphere always perfect to end Jax Brew Bitch Prowls.

Companion settled me into The Beast and stopped to say goodbye to some fellow Bold City patrons. I positioned myself into a comfortable position in which to sleep during our drive home and just as I was about to doze off, Tinker Beer, the Brew Fairy appeared on my shoulder and started tugging my ear to wake me up. She was dressed for mythological battle – a nice little two-piece ensemble – complete with a Sai in her hand.

“Quick, Brewbeerella Warrior Princess! … there is an establishment not honoring the late-night Happy Hour Specials they advertised and we must set them straight!”, Tink said,

Companion got in The Beast, looked over and thought I had already fallen asleep.

He just didn't realize I had vanished into the night, grabbing my Chakram, pointing it skyward and yelling, Into the fray, Tinkrielle – into - the - fray!”

Three reasons to be in Riverside Jax, Saturday Oct. 20 and a FREE Trolley ride to get ya around!

Trolleys take me back to my childhood – the years I spent living in San Francisco. My mother had gotten a wild hair and packed me in the back seat of her car with the stuff which wouldn't fit into the trunk and we, along with two of her friends, headed westward.

I was such a little girl – but grew up quickly, living where we did in the Tenderloin District. My mother had drilled me daily to remember which trolleys and buses I needed to ride in order to get to and from school since she was working and could not take me.

Looking back, I am amazed I never felt scared or threatened – and as I got older, Mom informed me she had made it very clear to those living and working along my paths to keep an eye out for her daughter. She had an uncanny knack for that.

I still remember how proud of myself I was when my grandmother (Laura D – see earlier blog post) came to visit and I was able to astound her with my knowledge of the city – well, at least my little part of it – as I pulled her onto one trolley after another.

The subject of a trolley came up tonight (Tuesday, October 9) at the Bold Bean Coffee House.

Engine 15's Nut Sack Brown
Ale and (904) Weissguy
We had begun this evening over to Engine 15 Brewing Company (1500 Beach Boulevard – Jax Beach – 904.249.2337) to pick up the glasses for (hopefully – weather permitting) the “maiden voyage” of the Jax Brew Cruises scheduled for tomorrow, along with some coasters and menus.

Yes, well of course, we HAD to have a beer or two while we were there. Companion and I shared the following two beers:

Engine 15 Nut Sack Brown Ale
A description could not do the name of the beer justice! … it's good … and nutty!

Engine 15 Brewing Company 904 Weissguy
A traditional Bavarian style Hefeweissen, notes of clove, orange and coriander along with a cloudy yeast character make this a summer favorite.

King Herb at
Engine 15 Brewing Co.
Oktoberfest 2012
I was in the mood for one of the delicious pretzels currently available at Engine 15 and this time, I ordered it with salt and Parmesan cheese – excellent. Companion opted for the always outstanding Engine 15 Chili.

While we were enjoying our brews and chews, I was glad to see Herb and Nona enter – the King of Engine 15 Oktoberfest and his bride!

My heartfelt thanks to Luch and his wife Kara, Sean, Andy and the rest of the team there at Engine 15 Brewing Company for their generosity and for always making each of our stops there wonderful experiences during Jax Brew Bitch Prowls.

Engine 15 Brewing Company (1500 Beach Boulevard – Jax Beach – 904.249.2337)

Bold Bean Coffee Roasters
The event for which we needed to return to the Riverside area was for Folio Weekly's Best of Jax party at Bold City Brewery (2670 Rosselle St  - 904.379-6551).

However, we were going to have an hour or so to kill before the scheduled time the event was to begin. I suggested we first visit Bold Bean Coffee (869 Stockton Street – 904.855.1181).

The magnificent, Erin Lee
I was having a little difficulty deciding whether I wanted a coffee or a beer as we entered the establishment and seated ourselves at the bar. It was delightful to learn that our barista was none other than Erin Lee, known for her radio program, Indie Endeavor on 89.9 WJCT, every Tuesday night at 11 pm. Also working behind the counter was Art, a friendly young man who also performs with his friend in a two-person band named Phenomenality.

We decided we would share a coffee – and a beer. Soon making its way to us was their popular Ginger Latte – a suitable substitute for the discontinued Curry Latte I had fallen in love with during earlier Prowls.

We also ordered from the Bold Bean Coffee House available taps:

Bell's Brewery Kalamazoo Stout
Kalamazoo Stout represents stouts in the Bell's year-round roster, offering a blend of dark chocolate and coffee flavors with just a hint of brewer's licorice. One of our oldest recipes, it balances a significant hop presence against the roast malt body. Note: the licorice they use is gelatin-free, making it acceptable for vegetarians. 6.0% ABV

It may sound a little odd – the sharing of a ginger-flavored coffee and a licorice-influenced beer – but both were good and mixed rather well.

As we rose to leave, the young woman sitting next to us at the bar and asked if we were also going to the event at Bold City Brewery. She introduced herself as Krysten Bennett, newly selected Executive Director of the Riverside Arts Market or as most know in the community, RAM.

She was gracious enough to share her plans for some upcoming events for the Riverside Arts Market, including:

Beer 80's Trivia Contest

... and THE CONTEST BEGINS!

The decade is the 1980's ... it was unlawful for breweries to sell their beer directly to consumers in North Carolina. All had to sell through distributors.

A certain man spearheaded the effort to get North
Carolina lawmakers to enact a change to the law books, thus allowing brewpubs to open. This man opened a Bavarian-style brewpub - the first of its kind in North Carolina.

The winner of this contest will be the first respondent to send me ALL the following:

a) the name of the man mentioned above;
b) where he was raised;
c) the name of his brewpub;
d) the city where it was ORIGINALLY opened;
e) the year this brewpub ORIGINALLY opened.

Winner will receive a free pint of beer with me at a mutually-agreed upon location AND a deck of cards created by Local Artists Coming Together (LACT) which features Pop Culture of the 1980's..

You can email me with your answers at regina@jaxbrewbitch.com

Must be 21 or over to win - ID required upon meeting. Sorry Jax Beer Guy and Springfield Brew Crew ... this one would be too easy for you! LOL!

Monkey's Uncle Tavern Beer Dinner

I miss my cat, Napoleon. He was one of three companion selected for me one day while living in the Caribbean. We had ventured over to the Animal Shelter to take one home and while there, my heart had itself been taken by three little cute fur-balls who made it clear they felt we would be quite acceptable to them as “servants”. I couldn't make the choice because I would feel horrible about leaving the other two behind. I told companion to make the agonizing final decision as I retreated to our vehicle - with tears in my eyes.

About 15 minutes later, he emerged carrying a box and I was sad, but curious, about the outcome of his feline deliberations. I knew I wouldn't sleep well for awhile, thinking of the other two little kittens left to uncertain futures.

Companion opened my door and handed the box to me. As he walked around the Isuzu Trooper we were driving at the time, I peeked inside to see which kitten had won the Cat Lotto and I was surprised and overjoyed that he had decided to take all three! … I hugged his big ol' neck and he explained that he knew we both would feel a little odd driving off, leaving two wondering why THEY didn't qualify – plus, he said, he figured I would talk about the other two so much when we got home, he'd have to drive back up there anyway, so this was his idea of saving gas and time.

The three kittens soon had names – Alexander (Alex), Whitaker and Napoleon (Nappy). Unfortunately, Alex had a congenital defect and traveled to the Rainbow Bridge just a couple of weeks later. Whitaker (a solid black cat) and Nappy (a silver-blue Blue Russian) were inseparable and those two enriched our early-stage relationship in so many ways. As they grew, they never fought and always slept sprawled all over each other. So cute!

Sadly, two years later and a few days after Hurricane Marilyn, Whitaker went missing (we think hopefully cat-napped by the folks living down the hill from us), so Nappy became our only feline companion for the next three years.

Fast forward a handful of years and Nappy made the journey to the States as we relocated there with all our belongings.

Nappy passed on to join Alex just a few months before we moved to Jacksonville and I realized that over the first twelve years of Nappy's life, he had had to endure twelve moves – 12 moves in 12 years – brought on by our career circumstances, opportunities and changes in fortune (up & down). Nappy lived to be 16 and was only brought down by feline diabetes. Otherwise, there is no telling how long that rascal would have lived. Like I said, I miss him.

I realized Nappy had learned to adapt – to change – and that innate ability allowed him to survive. It seemed to us he was always scowling, only tolerated us humans (since we served him) and had a disdain for all things … well, not “Nappy-related”. However, he always wanted to be around us and left alone by our other critters, the number of which grew over the years. Again, Nappy adapted to his ever-changing environment.

Einstein once said, “The measure of intelligence is the ability to change.”  Good ol' Albert was not talking about Nappy, of course, but of humankind. This translates easily into various business axioms and one can certainly cite examples of businesses which adapted to change and others which did not (“There will never be a market for personal home computers”).

The concept of adaptability came to my mind while learning of the history of the Monkey's Uncle Tavern (1850 S. 3rd Street – Jax Beach – 904.246.1070 ) as I prepared to visit there for a special event on Thursday (May 17). In business since 1985, the owners have been involved in the bar and restaurant business for 50 years.

Carolyn Lowrey Graham of Brown Distributing had invited me and companion to the first Craft Beer Dinner at that establishment, one which we had seen (but never visited) when shopping at HomeGoods, located in the same shopping center.

We had left early and stopped by Engine 15 Brewing Co. to enjoy a couple of their brewery's offerings and we made sure we left in time to make it to the Craft Beer Dinner in time.

Arriving 15 minutes prior to the scheduled start of the event (6:30 pm), we were still able to find a convenient parking place close to the Monkey Uncle's Tavern front door.

Entering, I was expecting a smokey atmosphere but I was pleased to note no lingering pungent odor – a slight hint, yes – but not repugnant, at all. There was a noticeable crowd at the bar and I soon noticed Carolyn arranging things in the right rear of the business.

We had our choice of the designated tables and we chose to sit at the same table as Carolyn, who was up and down all evening, describing the beer and assisting staff in whatever they needed.

Melanie & Jessica
Melanie and Jessica were our effective, energetic and gracious servers – a safe bet would be they are very popular there at Monkey's Uncle Tavern! … smiling and proactive in checking on us to see if we wanted anything, they both are quite advanced in customer service!  … Tory was in charge of beer-slingin' and he did a great job in making sure every patron received his or her allotment of fine brews. I look forward to speaking with Tory more in the future about the bar and future plans for it.

Chef Michael Ayres
Carolyn was kind enough to introduce me to Chef Michael Ayres (Chef Mike), newly arrived at Monkey's Uncle Tavern with vast and impressive experience at several upscale dining establishments including serving as Executive Chef at 11 South Bistro & Bar in Jacksonville Beach.

Even though Chef Mike was quite busy and very focused on the successful execution of the event, he was gracious enough to spend some time answering my questions and his plans for future adventures there with Monkey's Uncle Tavern. Professional, educated and personable, it was an honor to take part in this event and be given the opportunity of speaking with him.

With the increased demand for smoke-free environments, ownership of Monkey's Uncle Tavern are considering new options for those customers preferring environments without the lingering essence of burning cigarette tobacco while staying committed to their long-standing customers who enjoy a smoke while drinking at the bar. It is certainly important to “dance with who brung ya'”, as my grandmother used to say – and illustrates how dedicated the ownership, management and staff have become, through adaptation, to broadening their offerings to better serve the public. Keep in mind, they also have a liquor store – right next door! … the best of all worlds!

As a future update, I will provide any detail Monkey's Uncle ownership and management will allow concerning their future plans. For now, suffice it to say that whatever direction they take, the Greater Jacksonville Brews & Chews scene will reap the benefit. I am SO excited! ...

For those of you who were unaware of the event, had other commitments or decided not to attend, I provide the menu pairings for the Craft Beer Dinner – not to tell you that you missed out! - but to give you an idea of which direction Monkey's Uncle Tavern will be heading in the future:

Hot Chocolate Cake Surprise with sea salt caramel
Red Brick Porter (Atlanta, Georgia)

Yes, it was that good!
Not your average bar menu, huh? … yes, I know this was a special event – but for those of you familiar with Monkey's Uncle Tavern, you wouldn't have ever predicted such a menu (even given the fact this was a Craft Beer Dinner) from Monkey's Uncle, would you? … this represents a new horizon for Monkey's Uncle Tavern – another option for their customers – one focused on the ever-growing demand for quality brews and chews pairings in the Greater Jacksonville area ... Adaptation at its best! … at $40 per ticket, this has to be the deal of the year in Jacksonville! … no other venue offered that much top-quality Chews at that price – and then to “throw-in” the beer? … an outrageous value!

Carolyn working hard, as always!
Carolyn, Chef Mike and the owners all worked together to create this presentation for the delight of those attending the dinner – and they succeeded beyond any expectations!

The Thai peanut crusted satay was amazing – and I was dancin' the Fawn Marn Mong Kol when I learned seconds were available! … bring 'em on, Melanie and Jessica, bring 'em on!

The Crispy crab cake Porcupine was phenomenal! … the tennis ball sized piece of heaven had only problem – it wasn't the size of a basketball! ... So good it brought appreciative tears to my eyes!

The unique grain mustard accompanying the seared Atlantic salmon was described by Chef Mike and he indicated American mustard has been processed way beyond recognition in relation to “true” mustard which is still appreciated by those “across the pond”. The salmon was superb, by the way!

Chef Michael Ayres
Companion and I both moaned in delight when we tasted the mango lacquered Pork Tenderloin – mango and pork? … are you kidding, me? … how did they know these are two of my favorite things? … scrumptious! … lacquer me ecstatic!

Yeah, go ahead Chef Mike , pour on the final goodies – the Hot Chocolate Cake Surprise with sea salt caramel ,,, *moment of respectful silence* … decadent and the perfect finish to this incredible meal, the only “surprise” for me and companion was that I didn't go around to the other attendees and steal/beg more of the dessert from them.

Detailing the brew experience, I offer the following descriptions from the breweries' websites:

Cisco Brewers Bailey's Blonde Ale (Nantucket, MA)
A hoppy blonde ale. Plenty of domestic hops give this beer distinct character and a huge floral nose. Bailey's is a past recipient of a gold medal at the World Beer Championships. - Note: 5.3% ABV

The Native Brewing Company Florida Lager (South Florida)
The Native Lager is brewed with the finest German malts, German hops and a classic Germain yeast strain which produces and exceptionally smooth tasting golden lager.  Not too light and not too heavy this beer finishes with absolutely NO aftertaste.  Cool and refreshing yet flavorful... enjoy one anytime you want to feel like a Native.

Twisted Pine Brewing Raspberry Wheat Ale (Boulder, Colorado)
Raspberry Wheat Ale is an unfiltered wheat beer that is refreshing and perfectly balanced with a crisp tartness. Raspberries meet the nose, leading way to a clean creamy texture. Pours a golden color with a nice white head. The flavor is subtle, yet very distinct. A popular beer that will bring back your best summer memories all year ’round!  - Note: 5% ABV

Coronado Brewing Company Islander IPA (southern California)
Named after Coronado Island, our original India Pale Ale is a liquid expression of hometown pride. Cascade, Chinook and Columbus hops combine to provide an explosive burst of piney bitterness and luscious notes of apricot, grapefruit and mango that are sure to evoke imagery of swinging palms and sun-kissed shores. - Note: 7% ABV, 75 IBUs

Red Brick Brewing Company Porter (Atlanta, Georgia)
Intense dark copper color with a thick, intense foam with some brown color effects. Rich aromas of treated coffee of good persistence, very straight forward beer on the nose. Attack in the mouth shows some bitterness with a moderate acidity. Aromatic characters of roasted coffee beans with delicate spices. Finish is long on intense bitter cacao flavors.

Carolyn had been describing each course's paired beer and Chef Mike provided the mouth-watering details of each food item at various times during the event.

Upon conclusion of the meal, both thanked the attendees for coming to the Craft Beer Dinner and all of us gave them a rousing and well-deserved round of applause! … everyone involved in the planning and execution of this event did a remarkable job.

Good times always go so fast and this was no exception. Great food, tasty beer, warm fellowship and a common enjoyment of something new and special made this evening so very memorable.

There are new exciting chapters of Monkey's Uncle Tavern history to be written in the future. If it's been awhile since your last visit – or you've been holding off due to smoking policy – ADAPT a little, check out the beginning of a new environment – and behold the impressive metamorphosis taking place right now – at Monkey Uncle's Tavern! … you'll be sayin', “Well, I'll be a Monkey's Uncle … Tavern customer – from now on”.

My heartfelt appreciation to Carolyn Lowrey Graham for inviting me to the dinner, to Melanie and Jessica for being gracious hostesses, to Chef Michael Ayres for an AMAZING and delicious menu, to Tory and the rest of the crew at Monkey's Uncle Tavern for providing an exciting and memorable Jax Brew Bitch experience!

Most significantly, I present the “Napoleon Award” to the owners of Monkey Uncle's Tavern for having the insight and dedication to their customers and our community to embrace the concept of adaptation in order to satisfy the changing desires of their Greater Jacksonville area patrons.

Undoubtedly, Nappy would have instructed me to extend to you a sincere and most deserved, “Well done!”.
