A very special evening ...

Wednesday, October 3, 2012

Just some quick notes about tonight – a very special one for me and companion. My sister in Houston had sent me a Gift Certificate to use at Fujiyama Japanese and Sushi Restaurant (13141 City Station Drive – 904.374.2558)  and we decided this would be an appropriate evening on which to use it.

Companion had arrived home early for work and announced it was high time for a beer, especially on this special day – and we had just the one! We had recently taken advantage of a phenomenal Green Room Brewing Groupon Special which included two pints of beer, two pint glasses and one growler filled with one of their delicious beers! … our choice had been the Shaka Oatmeal Stout. This started the afternoon off perfectly.

After “priming the pump”, we finally headed out toward the Jacksonville International Airport. Fujiyama is located within the River City Market Place on the east side of I-95 at the Jacksonville International Airport exit. One notable thing I noticed about this area is that new construction is ongoing with a new Dick's Sporting Goods and Marshalls coming soon.

Entering Fujiyama, I was impressed with the décor and we were instantly greeted by two young women, one of which escorted us to the sushi bar as we requested.

The provided menus – note the plural – provided a vast array of choices. There was the usual formal menu, a printed sushi menu, a small table sandwich board menu and two wall menus listing different specials from sushi rolls to desserts to appetizers. Oh, yes! … there was also a laminated Special Rolls menu!

I happily started plowing through all the menus and we settled on the following items:

Dynamite Roll ($6.29)
Crunchy Tuna Roll ($5.09)
Crunchy Salmon Roll ($5.09)
Spicy Tuna Roll ($4.39)
Spicy Salmon Roll ($4.39)
Dancing Eel Roll ($6.09)
Sushi Deluxe ($19.95) – which was fourteen pieces of sushi and a Philadelphia Roll

Oh, my holy momma yama! ...the sushi was incredible – some of the best I have had in Jacksonville. The sushi chefs were efficient, friendly and creative.

The hibachi grill area was quite busy and obviously popular – the sushi bar area was noticeably well populated by the time we left. Others were making their way into the restaurant as we walked across the parking lot back to The Beast.

If you like sushi and have not tried Fujiyama Japanese and Sushi Restaurant, Google around – check Money and Mint magazines and find yourself a discount coupon to try it out for the first time. They have a loyalty plan and a Military Appreciation special, as well.

I know I'll be going back to Fujiyama – hope I see you there!

I was the “Coupon Kid” that evening, so I whipped out a Starbucks $10 voucher for which I had coughed up $5 and by driving around the River City Market Place, we were able to locate a nearby Starbucks Coffee Company coffee house.

Companion landed The Beast not too far from the front door of the establishment and we noticed it was quite busy. We jumped inside and ordered a Salted Caramel Mocha Frappuccino and a Spiced Pumpkin Frappuccino – both serving as our dessert.

Driving home, companion and I were reminiscing of our years together and funny anecdotes from our past. This was a wonderful evening for which we'll both always be grateful – as I am for all of you who may be reading.
