Happy 2013!

HAPPY NEW YEAR! … too cliché? … heard it enough already?

Well, customs and traditions aside, what would make YOUR New Year truly “happy”?

I pondered that as companion and I marveled at the incompetency of Congress (both parties) the past few days. Definitely proves you can be smart AND an ineffective leader at the same time. I decided to put politicians out of my mind as they fumble along trying to decide which families will have their paychecks decreased in 2013 – and enjoy the season in spite of them – have my own Fiscal Cliff Party!

Seriously, I started thinking what would make my 2013 happy and jotted down a few things:

·         Aardwolf Pub & Brewery opening – a labor of love for Michael Payne and Preben Olsen – a great addition to the Jacksonville Brews & Chews scene
·         Sun Dog Brewing Co. – beginning to brew and sell their own creations
·         Bold City Brewing Company – an expansion of distribution up the East Coast and throughout Florida
·         Intuition Ale Works – success in locating an additional facility
·         Pinglehead Brewing Company – brewing another batch of something special with them
·         Engine 15 Brewing Company – me getting over there much more often for great beer and food
·         Green Room Brewing – success in being able to have food trucks out back
·         Mile Marker Brewing – brewing another batch of something with them, as well
·         Pensacola Bay Brewing Company – brewing a batch with them and starting a Bottle Sharing group there
·         Kickbacks Gastropub – completing its expansion

Well, you can see where my mind is … honest thoughts though, nonetheless …

If “craft beer” is a focal point for you, please stay tuned for updates regarding the items noted above – and keep in mind all are invited to participate in the Bottle Sharing get-togethers at Green Room Brewing on Saturdays (currently scheduled at 2:00 pm) and at Brewer's Pizza on Sundays (also currently scheduled at 2:00 pm).

There is no cost for attending – other than we ask you bring a bomber or two smaller bottles (or cans) of craft beer  and/ or homebrew AND be willing to buy a pint of something from Green Room  and Brewer's Pizza while you are there. The establishments are kind enough to provide the space and sampling glasses. The craft beer you bring does NOT have to be expensive – just something you like or want to try and share with the group.

I maintain a database of e-mail addresses of those wishing to be kept informed of the next Bottle Sharing get-together since some days we may decide not to hold the Sharing or alter the time. If you are interested, please send me a note with your e-mail address indicating which list (Green Room, Brewer's Pizza or both) you prefer to regina@jaxbrewbitch.com

I'm receiving notifications of upcoming beer events in 2013, so my 2013 is starting off very nicely – and I hope yours is, as well.

To all of you who may be reading, I thank you for the motivation you so kindly provide with your support. It certainly means a great deal to me – and I look forward to getting going in 2013 – self-indulgently on my Jax Brew Bitch Prowls - for YOU.

With nary a thought about the Congressional Record, I wish you all a very successful and Happy New Year!

A day of Brewing with Mile Marker Brewery, Rendezvous's, Stogies and a little LoveChunk

Toasting to Mile Marker Brewery with Matt Hopcraft

The day had finally arrived! … the day I was going to drive down to Mile Marker Brewery (3420 Agricultural Center Drive  - St. Augustine – 904.217.4294) to help brew for a day! … I was so excited the evening the family there at Mile Marker had extended this special invitation and I was hoping nothing would occur hindering me from taking them up on this generous offer.

Head Brewer Dennis Grune had contacted me informing me I would be assisting them in brewing the last batch of the 1565 Ancient City Reed Ale. He reminded me to wear clothes which I would not mind getting dirty. I had also decided to purchase some rubber boots for the experience – glad I did!

Measuring out the grains ...
I arrived at Mile Marker a little ahead of the time we had arranged – just before 1:00 pm. Matt met me at the door, welcomed me inside and informed me I would be working that day with him.

There was no time wasted as we started gathering the ingredients and tools we would need for the day. Dennis made a brief appearance to say hello on his way out of the brewery on business,

I was exhausted but felt that I had accomplished something special. Although understanding each of the processes and why certain procedures were followed, due to Matt's excellent instructions, it would be difficult for me to re-create each activity in writing. As a rough and incomplete outline, I offer the following:

I followed Matt's precise directions and:

1)     assisted in staging the grain and malt to be used in the batch – nearby for efficient handling;
2)     weighed out the exact portions of grain – watching the scale very closely;
3)     climbed a ladder to add the malt into the mash tun;
4)     let set and let water extract (hot water breaks down the grain and extract the sugars);
5)     after awhile, transferred the run-off from the mash on to the kettle.

Then, I continued under Matt's tutelage by busying myself in the following processes and activities:

1)     recirculation (checking for color and clarity);
2)     sparging – more heat to extract as much sugar as possible;
3)     checking for gravity – every recipe has a gravity they want to achieve – as the kettles fill the gravity needs to be 1 Plato less than original weighed out the grains called for in the recipe gravity;
4)     bringing to a boil;
5)     adding bitter hops
6)     adding aromatics to different stages
7)     measuring gravity
8)     knocking out – taking hot wort, temperature down to fermentation tank

WOW! … eight hours of hot, hard work passed very quickly!

As I was helping to tidy things up, I realized this was a far cry (for me) from one year ago, Then, I was only familiar and not impressed with the all the mass-produced (and what I thought was quite tasteless) liquids being merchandized as “beer”. I would only imbibe with occasional pizza and barbeque – and I never finished by saying, “Wow, now THAT beer is good!” …

The almost eight hours had flown by and Matt was kind enough to include me in their tradition of the brewer having a “cold one” at the end of the day. I believe that afternoon, I had never tasted a better beer than that one particular Mile Marker Coconut Porter, sitting across the bar from Matt. However, I am certain that the 1565 Ancient City Red Ale, available just two short weeks from that day, will be even more satisfying  to me.

My heartfelt appreciation to Matt, Dennis, Ben, Mike and the rest of the family at Mile Marker Brewery for this amazing opportunity of participating in their brewing process and for providing a most memorable and cherished Jax Brew Bitch experience!

Tired but proud of my yeast and grain covered rubber boots, I wanted to venture into downtown St. Augustine to the Rendezvous Restaurant and World of Beer Bar (106 Saint George St # H – St. Augustine – 904.824.1090) for a beer – and to show off my “Brew Boots”!

We found a parking spot in a lot not too far from St. George Street where Rendezvous sits. Entering, there was live music and not too much of a crowd – not surprising since it was a Monday evening.

David was our bartender and he was quite friendly and obviously popular with the regular patrons currently enjoying their brews.

Lost Coast Brewery's Indica IPA
I instantly scanned the available draft beer selections and opted for Lost Coast Brewery's Indica IPA described on Lost Coast's website:

“Indica is a hoppy, full-bodied ale. It has a higher than average alcohol content balanced by radical bittering from Columbus hops, then dry hopped with generous amounts of Willamette and Centennial hop flowers.”

JBB Note: 6.5% ABV – definitely provided the hop jolt I wanted and served well as the substantial ale I was craving after a day of brewing!

Although companion and I were sharing the Indica, I couldn't help but scan the cooler of bottled beer in Rendezvous. HELLO! … they had the Orkney Brewery's Skull Splitter described on the brewery's website:

Orkney Brewery's Skull Splitter
“Skull Splitter is our strongest ale: which is named after Thorfinn Einarsson who was the 7th Viking Earl of Orkney. Sophisticated, satiny smooth with a deceptively light character, it is a tribute to our colourful forbear.

On the nose, this strong beer has a fruity malt character, with hints of dark fruit, spicy hop, dates and figs.

On the palate, rich and complex with sweet toasted malt, molasses, fresh and dried fruit and hints of warming spices.

Appearance
A crystal-clear, rich tawny-red colour beer; a tight, smooth head with hints of red and amber colour

Aroma
Juicy, almost fruity malt character, together with a medley of fresh and dried fruits, dates and figs, hints of ginger and cinnamon spice, hints of vanilla

Palate
A rich, fruity, wine-like complexity on the palate includes fresh and dried fruits, warm exotic spices, and light summer citrus fruits

Key Ingredients
Very best pale ale malt – and plenty of it – together with crystal and chocolate malts provide a rich, fruity backbone which is perfectly balanced by the spicy herbal character of East Kent Goldings hops.

JBB Note: I had been trying to locate this beer for quite some time after an old friend of mine, Ed Schilleci from New Orleans suggested it. Sweet and spicy to me throughout, this one could be deceptively “effective” with an 8.5% ABV.

The live performers took turns at the mic and entertained guests as they came and went during our visit. We enjoyed our beer, the ambiance and the conversations with those around us.

Many thanks to David and Rendezvous Restaurant for providing a great venue to celebrate first Jax Brew Bitch day of brewing!

Outside of Stogies Jazz Club and Coffee Bar
Leaving Rendezvous, I suggested to companion we go to Stogies Jazz Club and Coffee Bar (36 Charlotte Street – St. Augustine – 904.826.4008). We have been there a number of times in the past and really enjoy the setting, cigars, beer and their SPECIAL! … $5 for any draft beer and one of their house cigars!

Just a quick drive of a couple blocks later, we found a parking spot in the close vicinity. Turns out my “Brew Boots” are good to wear when walking the cobblestone streets in the historic St. Augustine shopping district!

There was a fair-sized crowd gathered outside enjoying their beer and fellowship. As we entered, I noticed several folks around the bar obviously having a fun evening. The dynamo behind the bar was Jon, who was taking care of all his customers. Quite busy, I was impressed with Jon's ability to keep a smile and friendly attitude while serving and carrying on dialogues with various customers.

Jon approached and asked what our choices would be that evening. It's hard to pass up the aforementioned value, so we both opted for that special. For my beer, I selected:Terrapin Beer's Hopsecutioner IPA described on Terrapin's website:

“This Killer IPA earns its name by using six different types of hops while still remaining an aggressive well balanced beer.

ABV: 7.3%
IBU’s: 78
O.G.: 16.3
FG: 3.0
Malt: 2 Row Pale Malt,Munich, Pale Crystal 24L, Victory
Hops: Warrior, Chinook, Centennial, Simcoe, Amarillo, Cascade (dry hop)”

Companion's beer preference was Highland Brewing Company's Oatmeal Porter described on Highland's website:

“A unique Highland creation, this robust beer is black in color, very malty with hints of chocolate-roasted flavor and a well balanced hop character.
This style was born on the docks of the Thames of London where dock workers or porters delighted in the strong dark ales brewed by the local pubs with roasted malts. This gave rise to the name by which this style is still known. A porter was traditionally served with oysters, the least expensive food available to the dock workers. Highland Brewing has taken this style a step farther with the addition of a judicious amount of flaked oatmeal which helps attain the smooth silky character of our porter.”
Grains - 2 Row Brewers Malt, Munich, Caramel 40, Caramel 60, Chocolate, Black & Flaked Oats

Hops – Chinook, Willamette, & Cascade
ABV – 5.9%
IBUs – 35

Our most fabulous bartender and
entertainer, Jon
We took our selections and chose an outside table at which to relax – the evening air was crisp and refreshing – just a slight chill. After brewing for a day, it felt great. Companion was certainly enjoying the cigar Jon had lit – while occasionally sipping his Highland Oatmeal Porter. I was quite content to sit silently with my Hopsecutioner, reflecting on my earlier brewing activities at Mile Marker Brewing.

Although it was late in the evening, I was invigorated by my earlier brewing experience - and the tasty beer! …  Not quite ready to call it a night, I told companion I would like one more beer while he enjoyed the cigar I had received as part of the Special. Keep in mind, the Jax Brew Bitch likes her an occasional cigar but I rarely smoke more than a third of it  - and then give it to companion. This night, I wasn't in the mood for the cigar, so mine had his name on it.

We re-entered Stogies and found an unoccupied table near the door. As I approached the bar to have the cigar lit by Jon, I noticed the talented entertainer was performing much to the delight of the audience! … he continued to astound me with his choice and performance of song selections from various genres. At certain times, another musician would join him and it obvious they were used to performing together.

Jon performing The Pixies
Jon also got into the act ... performing a song from … the Pixies! … wow! … my era! … and he was quite impressive – obviously very comfortable on a stage.

During the course of Jon's performance, he introduced the original entertainer. His name was Chris Woods which, when transferred via loop pedal to the sound system became “Chris Frickin' Woods” … uh … well … I COULD have put F****** but that might have been considered by some to be inappropriate.

So, for the remainder of our visit, we were serenaded by Chris Frickin' Woods! … no doubt Chris is very popular. Talented and quite entertaining, the crowd was truly enjoying the performance.

I knew it was a “school night” and we needed to start heading back to Jacksonville. Companion had finished his second cigar and I was satisfied I had done an admirable job of sampling brews, so I indicated to companion I was ready to go home.

Matt "LoveChunk" Harvey & Chris "Fricken" Woods
Upon reaching the door to leave, Chris Frickin' Woods alleged (in a friendly way) that I had not tipped the musician(s) – but I confirmed for him with Jon, standing safely at the bar, that I indeed parted with a small token of my appreciation for the evening's entertainment. I asked the name of the other young  troubadour and Chris responded that his talented co-performer was none other than Matt “LoveChunk” Harvey of the band of the same nom de musique orchestre.

Seriously, if you can catch a Chris Frickin' Woods performance, you will enjoy it – a gifted young musician with a bright future. Of course, no doubt Matt “LoveChunk” Harvey will snatch the golden ring in the future, as well. And Jon? … besides being a great bartender – and obviously being “born for the stage”, he is also quite effective in getting a bar crowd aroused and on their feet.

A most sincere “Well Done!” to Jon for his experienced, efficient and effective multitasking during the duration of our stay ! … a heartfelt Jax Brew Bitch standing ovation for Chris Frickin' Woods and Matt “LoveChunk” Harvey for their inspired ballads – and a most respectful “Thank You” to  Stogies Jazz Club and Coffee Bar for providing an atmosphere simply perfect in which to end this very special and oh so memorable Jax Brew Bitch Prowl!

Getting Gas, Killing Kegs & a Double Feature at Mile Marker Brewing

Gas Full Service Restaurant
Carol Lowrey Graham of Brown Distributing told me about a restaurant in St. Augustine with a rather distinctive name – Gas Full Service Restaurant. I was intrigued by the nom de guerre, of course – all types of connotations were bouncing around in my head – but her description of the place is what motivated me to pre-plan our Prowl for Thursday evening (April 5) to center in and around the Nation's Oldest City.

Since my agenda for the evening included at least three destinations, we headed south early. To get to Gas Full Service Restaurant, we exited at the Outlet Malls (Exit 318 – S.R. 16) , turned left and stayed on S.R. 16 until it dead-ended on San Marco Avenue and turned right and drove into town. After turning left and crossing the Bridge of Lions, the establishment was just ahead on the right.

The restaurant occupies a building originally constructed as a gas station, later (reportedly) home to a florist business.  After dining there, I certainly believe the current endeavor represents its highest and best use!

Entering the place, I was instantly pleased with the décor! … fresh, clean and inviting, I was impressed with the owners' follow-through in maintenance and cleaning. You know, all restaurants open up initially extremely clean – but after awhile, you notice the occasional dead waterbug in a corner, stained baseboards, mildewed tile grout, grimy soap dispensers, etc. Not here! … it was immaculate – so refreshing!

Our server, Sami
A cute energetic girl approached, introduced herself as Sami and seated us at a table near the door. Sami is obviously happy to work there and her excitement was indeed infectious. She was attentive, efficient and never lost her smile!

A menu board noted their dinner specials and … available beer! … another plus already!

We quickly selected (descriptions per breweries' websites):

Red Brick Brewery
Brown Ale
Red Brick Brewery Brown Ale - “Dark copper color with bronze rims. Very thick foam, persistent. Nice and elegant toffee aromas with spices and roasted almonds, very persistent and evolving on brewed coffee.

Very franc in the mouth. Black fruits, plum with more intense spicy notes of canella and cloves. The texture is very delicate. The beer seems to have all characters for a beer with personality but is kind of dissociated having intense flavors at first, then some emptiness in the middle of the mouth and finishing with a bitter finish.” - Note: 6.0% ABV

Narragansett Lager
"Jaws" Beer!
Narragansett Lager - “5.0% Alcohol by Volume and 12 IBUs. A classic American lager and the workhorse of the Gansett stable. Available all year long in bottle, can and on tap! ...We brew our lager with six row malt, seedless hops, corn from Iowa, our lager strain (the same one the brewery has depended on since just after Prohibition), and the purest water from Lakes Ontario and Hemlock … This beer is brewed just right for drinking—crisp and refreshing. It’s got more flavor than other premium lagers, yet it’s one of the most drinkable beers in the world.

Chillin' with Narragansett
Narragansett has the highest rating of all domestic premium lagers on BeerAdvocate.com, and received the bronze medal for American Lagers at the 2008 World Beer Cup. 2010 Gold Medal winner in the lager category at the 14th annual Great International Beer & Cider Competition in Providence, RI. Winner of bronze medal in the 2010 World Beer Championship and the silver medal in the 2011 World Beer Championship.

The Lager is old reliable. It was the first beer brewed by “The Original Six” back in 1890, the bestselling beer in New England from the 1930s to the 1970s, and the official beer of the Boston Red Sox from 1944-1975.”
JBB note – Narragansett is also the beer Captain Sam Quint in the movie “Jaws” drinks and then crushes the can in his hand.

The Jalapeno Popper Burger
Having taken care of the brews, it was time to handle the chews! … Carol had described the Jalapeño Popper Burger in such a way my mouth watered upon hearing about it. The menu includes the drool-inspiring details: “Two 4oz. Cartwheel Ranch Beef Patties stuffed with Cream Cheese, Cheddar Cheese & Fresh Sliced Jalapenos … Grilled then Panko Breaded and Deep Fried – Served with Lettuce, Tomato, Onion and Ranch ($12.50)”  - yep, that was for me! …

Companion ordered the Black and Blue Chicken Hot Brown Sandwich described on their menu: “Open Faced Sandwich with Blackened Chicken, Blue Cheese Bechamel, Fried Green Tomatoes & Applewood Smoked Bacon ($9.50).

Black & Blue Chicken Hot Brown
The discussion I was having with companion abruptly stopped when the food arrived … I think the world stood   still for a moment, actually … as we beheld the masterpiece – an inspired creation from a talented Gastro-Maestro - the  Jalapeño Popper Burger.  The height of this … this … this sandwich (too impotent a word)  … is unbelievable! ...Owner Lindy Loose dropped by to say hello and observe our amazement. I asked how in the world one could begin consuming this marvel and she mentioned something about unhinging my jaw – much like a python. Amy Vanderbilt suggests one covering one's mouth with a pillow case when attempting this, I believe ...

Unhinging jaw ...
I would have sought the advice of companion but he was way too busy lavishing lustful attention to his Black and Blue Chicken Hot Brown Sandwich – complete with bacon and fried green tomatoes on top! … he was such a happy fellow!

The homemade potato chips we both had selected as our side are wafer-thin, crisp and have the waffle pattern body which you can see through. Very unique and delicious!

Somehow, I managed to dig into my “Mount Bovine on a Plate” and the flavor was fantastic. Don't worry about the Jalapeño influence – it is not overpowering – in fact, it is mild but noticeable – a wonderful tastebud-pleasing effect. I was able to devour half of this monster before requesting a to-go box.

I took a bite of companion's Black and Blue Chicken Sandwich – the combo of the bacon, blue cheese and fried green tomatoes with the blackened chicken was scrumptious! … hungry, he was able to empty his plate. He winked and said he was still a “growin' boy” ...

Both entrees were excellent – companion called them “grand slams” – ones we'll definitely order again!

Sea Salt & Caramel Brownie
Sami, our food temptress, casually mentioned their impressive dessert selections. Carol had already suggested the Sea Salt and Caramel Brownie  – served with homemade vanilla ice cream, I might add – so, we could NOT  leave without trying that particular delicacy. Once it arrived, we realized Gas Full Service Restaurant had once again delivered an insurmountable summit of splendor – let's call it “Sugarload Mountain”. Decadent … evil … awe-inspiring mixture of the sweet caramel, the distinctively unique salty-brine of the sea salt and down-home Mamaw-type chocolate brownie atop homemade vanilla ice cream make this dessert a benchmark for the Jax Brew Bitch. All others will be judged against this one, believe-you-me!

Sami & owner, of Gas Full Service
Restaurant, Lindy Loose
Owner Lindy dropped by our table once again and she graciously answered some questions I had about the restaurant, its history and her and her husband's (Ben) plans for the establishment's menu in the future.

Dedicated to wholesome and quality ingredients, Lindy and Ben purchase only from local suppliers offering the very best. What goes into their finished products is all fresh, clean and natural. You can certainly taste the difference and that it is important and notable in an industry where the choice between “cheap but tasteless” vs. “higher quality & cost”  is too often made by rationalizing while quoting business-school axioms about bottom-line considerations. Hogwash! … Quality In makes for Quality Out … and Gas Full Service Restaurant embraces this quality concept – and then goes the extra mile.

On the way out, I noticed above the door as you leave, there is a message on the wall thanking patrons for “Not Passing Gas” - which, of course, is targeted for others than myself for we all know that Southern girls are never plagued with that – we just get “the puffs” … however, it IS a cute play on their name and indicative of the fun atmosphere they have created and maintain.

I can tell you the Jax Brew Bitch will be returning to Gas Full Service Restaurant – and soon! … it is one of those places you can feel comfortable in recommending to your friends and family … rest assured Lindy, Ben and Sami will make your visit there memorable and first-rate!

Jacksonvillians, if you have not tried this eatery, you are truly missing out on something spectacular. Treat yourself! … get on down there, cross the Bridge of Lions and make your night-out-on-the-town or weekend getaway a very special experience by getting filled up at the Gas Full Service Restaurant!

My heartfelt appreciation to Lindy, Ben and Sami for making their place a new and exciting regular stop on Jax Brew Bitch St. Augustine Prowls!

J.P. Henley's in
St. Augustine, FL
Excited with having tried a new place, I was ready to invade J.P. Henley's (10 Marine St. - St. Augustine – 904.829.3337), one of our favorite haunts in St. Augustine. That evening, they were having a Kill-the-Keg night featuring Dogfish Head Craft Brewed Ales Namaste and El Presidente Cervesa. I was there for the Dogfish Head, of course!

Dogfish Head's Namaste
The Namaste is described on Dogfish Head's website: “A witbier bursting with good karma. Made with dried organic orange slices, fresh-cut lemongrass and a bit of coriander, this Belgian-style white beer is a great thirst quencher. Namaste was originally... A witbier bursting with good karma. Made with dried organic orange slices, fresh-cut lemongrass and a bit of coriander, this Belgian-style white beer is a great thirst quencher.

Namaste was originally brewed at our pub in Rehoboth Beach with our Italian friend Leo from Birra del Borgo. It was a tribute to our friends at 3 Fonteinen brewery in Belgium, who had devastating production loss (1/3 of their annual production) in 2009.”

JP Henley's Roasted
Chicken Salad
Peggy had ordered their Roasted Chicken Salad ($12.95) and it looked delicious! … J.P. Henley's describes it: “Herbed Garlic Chicken, grape tomatoes & savory roasted red pepper corn relish on a bed of spring greens” - I'll get this next time!
Companion and I apparently “killed the keg” of the Namaste after only one small glass each – but there were other motivated Dogfish Head fans there before we arrived!

Thanks to J.P. Henley's for being a solid beer venue in the St. Augustine area!

My third main objective for this evening was to attend the Double Feature Movie Event at Mile Marker Brewing! … Movies at the Brewery? … COUNT ME IN! ...  we were Gone With the Wind from J.P. Henley's and hightailing it over to 3420 Agricultural Center Drive  - St. Augustine.

This unique beer-cinema event was starting at 8:00 pm and the movies being shown were:

“Beerfest” (2006) and “Strange Brew” (1983)

Perfect seat in the house!
Arriving just in time, I was “ready for my close-up” with some of the delicious Mile Marker brews, so companion and I grabbed a Pecan Brown Ale and a Coconut Porter, respectively, and seated ourselves on one of the comfy sofas situated in front of the large screen TV. Neither of us had seen Beerfest, so we were looking forward to enjoying this brew-centered entertainment!

Peggy joined us there and she secured her own seat on one of the other sofas near the TV. This was her first visit to Mile Marker and she loved it – she stayed out a lot longer than she had planned because of the good beer she enjoyed and the great folks she met during the evening.

Mile Marker Brewing's
Coconut Porter
During the movie, there were occasional “official” pauses to answer Beer Trivia in order to win swag and pints of beer. They were also raffling swag after providing raffle tickets to each patron. Although I need to bone up on my beer trivia, I DID win a free beer by answering one of the trivia questions! … WooHoo!  - “Hats and Horns” ! ….by the way, I'm now searching for all obscure beer facts – feel free to share ...

A little over halfway through Beerfest, Tap Room Manager Ben Stamps offered to introduce me to one of the owners, Mike Fierro, head brewer Dennis Grune and Mile Marker's “Man with the Golden Pen”, Steve and his lovely wife, Dorothy. Dorothy introduced us to Liz, who is so funny and friendly – and she and Peggy hit off, as well.

Steve, the JBB and Mike
Steve and Dorothy invested financially and emotionally in the brewery right before it opened last year, after in-depth interviews with ownership, management and staff.  They own and operate a successful business in New Jersey and their business acumen will undoubtedly benefit Mile Marker Brewery substantially in the future.

Mike Fierro's background is, in a word, amazing. His previous business successes include Vitamin Water and Honest Tea – a well-seasoned professional in the beverage industry, he is now focused on Mile Marker Brewery and its consistency of quality.

Investor Steve said that during interviews, all those involved with the brewery were very impressive – they are living, breathing examples of motivated believers – those who not only talk a good game but show their dedicated spirit in how much and how hard they each work. You hear phrases like “sweat equity” a lot in business, but Steve said this level of personal ownership in the success of Mile Marker went beyond the financial realm. It is their “baby”, he said – a  wonderful labor of love – each is firmly committed, knowing there will be growing immense satisfaction for all involved as their “baby” grows up. Notably, Steve mentioned owner Mike Fierro was “all in”, which meant a great deal to him. In fact, he said that perception was one of the deciding factors influencing his decision to invest with his pocketbook – and heart.

I also had the chance to say hello to owner Vance Joy making his way around the brewery and tap room during the evening. Of course, Houston was there, spreading the canine love to all who ventured in. As Official Ambassador for Mile Marker Brewery, Houston holds sway over the establishment.

Matt Hopcraft, one of the brewers at Mile Marker was there and I was able to speak with him and his lovely wife Amanda (with a last name like that, these two were born to be in the brewery business!). Amanda is an amazingly talented make-up artist and is soon opening her own spa in St. Augustine, providing hair styling, manicures, pedicures, facials and many other spa treatments.

Luke, Caleb & Ben
We were having such a wonderful time speaking with Vance, Dennis, Steve, Dorothy, Liz, Amanda and Matt, we missed the end of Beerfest and all of Strange Brew. - didn't bother us in the least. The discussions being had and the friendships made were all vastly more important. Ben had excused himself to pick his brother up, just in from serving our country in the Middle East – companion and I appreciate his service to our Nation!

Sweet new additions to the
Mile Marker family.
Mile Marker continues to excite me. Their enthusiasm and earnest dedication to quality is something at which to marvel. I was overjoyed when the “family” there at Mile Marker formally invited me to come and “brew for a day” with them – to have the opportunity of learning firsthand more about the brewing process. They warned I would get hot and dirty – but hey, I get the same over a pile of freshly boiled crawfish! … I can't wait to do this! … words cannot express how grateful I am to be given the privilege of this unique experience!

Time flew by and way too soon it seemed, it was closing time. Bidding farewell to Houston and the gang at Mile Marker Brewery, we buckled ourselves into the Jeep and headed North by Northwest. I knew I would soon sleep soundly, having enjoyed such a wonderful evening - one so satisfying, it was the perfect Jax Brew Bitch Prowl.

It is said “if you don't know where you're going, any road will do” - I can tell you without a doubt that Mile Mark Brewery knows where THEY are going and the road they are traveling is headed toward a place called “Success”.

Jacksonvillians, exciting adventures await just a short trip south … I urge you to climb aboard the Mile Marker Brewery Express ... hold on to your pints ... and enjoy the ride!

A meaningful Jax Brew Bitch “thank you” to Ben, Vance, Dennis, Mike, Steve, Dorothy, Matt, Amanda and all at Mile Marker Brewing for delivering yet another delightful and unique event, for providing our friend Peggy with an outstanding first-time experience – and for making me and companion feel so very welcome!
