Killing the Monday drab.

Monday, March 19 found companion and I staring at one another, trying to develop a plan for the evening. Neither of us was motivated for “time in front of the stove” but we were having trouble coming up with alternatives.

High Tide Burrito
in San Marco
Companion came through with an inspired idea. We had been wanting to try High Tide Burrito Company (1538 Hendricks Avenue) since we had passed this San Marco establishment in a previous Prowl. Checking their website, we noticed on Monday's they offered $2 Lupe's Famous Baja Fish Tacos … $2 Fish Tacos? … WooHoo!

I guess the Jeep had overheard us and was waiting for us, idling impatiently, as we locked the door to leave.

Companion managed to keep at least one wheel on the ground the entire way over to High Tide Burrito and we were able to find a good parking space.

Nice, comfortable, modern décor … a counter at which to place your order … I already liked the place.

Lupe's Famous Baja Fish Tacos
Friendly staff and prompt service made the experience even better. The fish tacos were delicious and quite the bargain. Believe it or not, neither of us ordered one of their beers, available on tap. Just not quite ready to partake, I guess. Beers on tap, which included local brews such as, Bold City and Intuition Ale Works.

High Tide Burrito Company is now on my list to visit again in the near future. I look forward to trying other items on their menu, which is posted on their website, along with a faxable order form so you can send them your order, confirm it and pick it up. Great idea!

High-fives to High Tide Burrito for providing a delicious and reasonable Jax Brew Bitch experience!

Okay … now, it was on to brew-related pursuits … but where to go?

We put the Jeep in Prowl Mode and soon passed by a place which has always caught our eye but have never tried. A neighborhood bar-looking place, Sherwood’s Liquors (1105 San Marco Blvd ) seemed to be open, so we pulled into their parking lot. We were wondering if we would feel out of place – outsiders – invading hallowed ground. We were in for a pleasant surprise!

Welcomed warmly by Vickie, we soon learned all their beer was bottled but they had a significant array to choose from. I settled on a Newcastle Brown Ale and companion selected Sierra Nevada's Pale Ale.

Sitting comfortably at the bar, we learned from Vickie about the history of the place and her involvement as first a patron and later an employee whose tenure is now measured in years.

Beer Ball aka Skee Ball
We also met the daytime bartender, Mac, who was also gracious in providing additional details about the bar, pool tables (five that I counted), Skee Ball (you can win beer !!!), darts and video games. By the way, look at the map as you go from the main bar area into the pool table section. That map charts Mac's 29-day trip around the 48 contiguous United States, touching each state along the way. Amazing is too feeble a word for his accomplishment. Able to hit a number of things on his bucket-list, Mac's trip also allowed him to meet new people, visit a number of bars around the country and provide him a story about each of the 48 continental states. When you meet him, ask him about California!

Prices are very reasonable at Sherwoord's ... and the restrooms are clean!

Mac from Sherwood's
The atmosphere is that which you would expect of a neighborhood bar. To those of you who THINK they prefer the more refined establishments, do yourself a favor and leave your Snoot Suit in your car and go in for a visit and a quick beer to see for yourself, I bet the friendly staff will make you feel right at home – and see if you can do better than I did when I tried Skee Ball. I blamed it my high level of sobriety, so I am sure I will do much better when I visit again soon – during an extended weekend Jax Brew Bitch Prowl.

Thanks to Vickie and Mac for making us feel welcome and for introducing us to Sherwood's!

Irish I had another beer ... Happy St. Patty's Day!

Here's to the patron saint of Ireland! … companion was still out of town but he had stressed that he wanted me to have fun with the group, so I accepted an invitation for me and Tina to park over at Vince's so we all could perambulate about Riverside.

Our first stop was Kickback's Gastropub where we met Teresa, Marco and family. Vince, Tina and I split their popular large appetizer sampler and I ordered a Bold City Irish Red to commemorate the festive holiday. The Irish Red is distinguished from Bold City's 1901 Red Ale in that, in my opinion, the 1901 is a little “smokier” than the Irish Red.

We made quick work of the appetizers and made our way over to the street party where Margaret Street was closed off for vendors and beer booths. Some of the offerings available that day included Irish Car Bombs, Jameson Irish Whiskey, Guinness and Killian's Red. Keeping in the spirit of the day, I had a Killian's Irish Red.

Killian's website displays the following characteristics of the Irish Red:

“Deep ruby red in color with a dense off-white foam. Roasted and toasted caramel characteristics with ale-like fruit esters.Toasted/roasted caramel malt introduction with nice bready characteristics. Full-bodied with medium carbonation. Well-balanced with slight lingering citrus rind and subtle sweetness.”

St. Patty's Irish Stew
The energized atmosphere of the street party got me hungry again – at least that's the story I'm stickin' to – so, I decided I would eat something at Bold City Brewery. Finding a table right inside the door of the tap room, I ordered the St. Patty's Irish stew, Colcannon (mashies and kale) and soda bread – all this for only $8.00 -  and I had a Bold City Irish Red – right from the tap!

Food was great – beer was spectacular – company was the best.

My heartfelt appreciation to our group for taking me under their wing in companion's absence and a hearty “thank-you” to Kickback's Gastropub and Bold City Brewery for tasty St. Patrick's Day fare!

Beer, Whiskey and Rum ... Oh, my!

Carolyn and the JBB

Of course, with an event advertised as “Frothy Friday”, there was no way the Jax Brew Bitch was not going to attend. Carolyn Graham of Brown Distributors was hosting a tasting at Riverside Liquors on Friday, March 16.  She was featuring concoctions prepared by Left Hand Brewing Company, Cigar City Brewing, Ruckus Brewing and Coronado Brewing Company.

I sampled (and purchased) Coronado Brewing Company's Saison By The Sea and Ruckus Brewing's Hoptimus Prime Double IPA.  They were exceptional!

The Coronado Saison by the Sea is noted on the label as being a “Belgian-Style Ale Brewed with Spices” -  blindfolded, I would have said something like “Orangey-Gingery-Spicy” - and something I never would have thought I would like. However, my horizons have expanded and there are a number of Saisons I now like – including this one.

Ruckus Brewing's Hoptimus Prime is described on their website: “Aggressively formulated with five different hop varieties, Hoptimus Prime is then dry hopped for two weeks, ensuring a MASSIVE hop flavor and aroma. Perfectly balanced with three types of malt, Hoptimus Prime is truly the pinnacle of hop flavor.
This Double IPA pairs fantastically with spicy Thai food, Mexican cuisine, or a big ol' bowl of chili.”

With a reported ABV of 9.0% and 92 IBUs, I believe the best pairing would be me with an open bottle of this delicious brew. I'll see your Chicken Satay and Shredded Pork Enchilada and raise you one bowl of my famous Chili Robert (pronounced Roebair).

With eye-blitzing hop flavor, this Double IPA  delivers as advertised. Thank you, Ruckus Brewing!

Rogue Dead Guy Whiskey
and Pink Gin
So, was Carolyn through tempting me and other patrons with fine alcohol-laden offerings? … certainly you jest … Carolyn floored me with a couple of whiskey samples … yes, whiskey! … something I have yet to acquire a taste for – but “demure I ain't” … so, gimme a two-fingers, barkeep …

First up was Rogue's Dead Guy Whiskey (80 Proof) and it is described on Rogue's website:

“Delicately sweet with a rich malt complexity, opens up to a warm peppery finish. Dead Guy Whiskey is made with the same 4 grains that are used to make Dead Guy Ale since 1991. Northwest Harrington, Maier Munich, Klages, and Carastan malts; Free Range Coastal Water & Distiller's yeast.”

Steeling myself for a harsh “Whiskey Trip” (nod to Gary Stewart - RIP), I was surprised it was a lot more pleasant than expected on the back end – both of the taste and my own since I didn't end up falling on it!

Palm Ridge Reserve
Following up the Rogue offering was a whiskey from a small town not quite two hours from here – Umatilla, Florida. Palm Ridge Reserve Whiskey (90 Proof) is described on their website:

“Florida Farm Distillers is a micro-distillery located on a small cattle farm near Umatilla, Florida. Owners Marti and Dick Waters believe that their personal and detailed attention makes Palm Ridge Reserve™ stand out from other mass produced liquors. The boutique operation produces a 90 proof, young Florida Bourbon-style whiskey. This limited quantity, select whiskey (only 500 cases per year), is non-chill filtered, mellowed with toasted orange and oak woods, and left to finish in small charred oak barrels.”

WooHoo! … flavorful, the definite oak “hint” is apparent and this whiskey is indeed smooth. FYI - Carolyn suggested adding a  little bit of water to release the oils when enjoying this whiskey at home.

Siesta Key Silver
and Siesta Key Gold
When Carolyn learned I like rum, she further led me down Distillery Road by providing samples of two different Siesta Key Rums from Sarasota, Florida. I'm rather picky about my rum, having lived in the Caribbean a few years and consistently prefer Cruzan Rum from St. Croix. These two rums, a light and a dark, from Drum Circle Distillery, are named Siesta Key Silver Rum and Siesta Key Gold Rum.

Drum Circle's website describes the Silver Rum: “Our silver rum is made with molasses from Florida-grown sugar cane, triple-filtered water, and a secret set of yeasts. We have a unique distillation and filtration process that results in a pure, flavorful and incredibly smooth rum that you are sure to enjoy straight or mixed.

We are also pleased to highlight that Siesta Key Silver Rum took the Best in Class Gold medal at the largest rum festival/competition in the western hemisphere, the RumXP International Tasting Competition, beating out several large well known brands in a blind taste test. Earlier batches also won a Silver Medal at the 2010 International Rum Festival, a Silver Medal at the highly competitive New York International Spirits Competition and a Silver Medal at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition.”
And of the Gold Rum, they state: “Siesta Key Gold Rum is hand-crafted in small batches in Sarasota, Florida at our small, artisan distillery. We make our rums from start to finish, using local 100% Florida grown sugar cane, triple-filtered water, and distillation in a true copper pot still.

Our Gold Rum is additionally aged in new, charred American oak barrels to bring out it's wonderful color and vanilla and caramel notes. The result is a high-quality, smooth and flavorful rum that can be enjoyed sipped neat or over ice, or used as the base for your favorite rum cocktails.”
Quality of both rums is superb and neither possess that painful “jet-fuel” aftertaste common in most commercial rums … and guess what? … Spiced Rum is coming soon! … Ah, meson!

Endeavoring to come full circle, I was bound and determined to get back on the beer track, so I ordered a Sierra Nevada Bigfoot Barleywine Style Ale – now, THAT'S a mouthful. I enjoyed this robust brew, described on Sierra Nevada's website: “Our award-winning barleywine boasts a dense, fruity bouquet, an intense flavor palate and a deep reddish-brown color. Its big maltiness is superbly balanced by a wonderfully bittersweet hoppiness.”

Scooby to the Hops, Bigfoot! … Scooby to the Hops! … so delicious … and did I mention 9.6% ABV and 90 IBUs? … Such a great eye-poppin' way to end this tasting experience.

Thanks to Riverside Liquors and Carolyn with Brown Distributors for providing such a unique event for what was for me, part of a very exciting Jax Brew Bitch Prowl!

Guest of the Mad Hatter
The growling heard throughout Riverside was emanating from my stomach. To quiet the deafening roar, I search quickly for a nearby purveyor of food and realized one of my favorites, Hovan, was a short walk away. I love this place – the appetizers are delicious, made even more so by the follow-up California Dreaming Hookah. Best of all? … Sierra Nevada Stout for $2 … yes, $2 – all their beers are $2 … a great value.

Rejuvenated by the food, there was more prowling to come. The group then decided karaoke was in order so we headed over to Mc B's Lounge and Karaoke Bar at 6211 St. Augustine Rd. (University).

Our bartender was Theresa, who served us well that evening. This is a smoking establishment offering bottled beer and hard liquor only – no food, of course. Strong cigarette odor exists, so be aware. If you like Line Dancing and Karaoke, this is the place for you! ... The bathrooms were very clean and the friendly eclectic crowd was obviously “regulars”. This local establishment might be considered by some as a “dive” or “hole in the wall” - but it is a cool one, even so.

One negative is how they threw out my friend's daughter when they learned of her being only 20. Now, I certainly understand the law and the concern by the establishment; however, to put a beautiful young woman out on the street alone? … POOR decision in this day and time … and doing so without checking IDs as people enter? … probably incurs substantial liability.

This lapse of clear-thinking will not keep me from visiting in the future, though – it is a neat venue to try, if you have not already.

After most of our group (not me) had their turn at the microphone, we headed over to Mavericks at The Landing to end the evening. Admission was $5 and they have a minimum set for credit/debit transactions at $10. There is an ATM machine in case you're under the $10 minimum but mind the ATM fees. This combination will make it a little more difficult to make this a regular stop on prowls, but the atmosphere was nice. Looks like being in an “iffy” location anyway (The Landing), they would want to do more to make it easier to spend your money there – but like I said, the atmosphere was nice.

My drink of choice was a margarita – which was tasty and prepared properly.

Spotting a mechanical bull, I was dissuaded from trying by some in the group since companion was out of town and no one wanted to deal with an injured inebriate. Maybe when companion returns, he can show me how they do it Texas …

There was a live DJ and dancing – full liquor bar and beer both bottled and on tap.

I was glad to be back at Mavericks again – the last time, we were there to see David Allan Coe perform, a rather uninspired appearance for him, an obvious surprise for the staff, as well. This visit was a bit more satisfying and served well as the last stop on a wonderful Jax Brew Bitch evening.

Tap's Blue Moon Tasting, round 2 ...

TeamHopHeads David Rigdon had mentioned during the Blue Moon tasting at Taps Bar & Grill in Fleming Island on Monday, March 5 that there would be another one at Taps in St. Johns the following Monday, March 12.

I hadn't figured I would go since companion was out of town, but Springfield Brew Crew Marc Wisdom and Kristi kindly offered to tote me down there for the tasting.

It was my first visit to this establishment and I noticed it was noticeably smaller than the one in Fleming Island and had fewer taps – I also did not notice any tables equipped with the table-top taps. However, the place was very nice and the service was quite friendly and professional.

I had planned to order Blue Moon's Dark Chocolate Bacon Porter which I had voted as my favorite the previous week.  Blue Moon describes this nectar: “This deep-mahogany colored ale is brewed with hickory-smoked bacon and dark chocolate for a slightly sweet yet savory taste.” … most definite yummers …

Mile Marker 82 Islamorada IPA
However, I noticed they had Mile Marker Brewery's Mile Marker 82 Islamorada IPA on tap that evening! … WooHoo! … as close as I have found Mile Marker's brews to my house! … of course, I ordered that and a bowl of Taps's delicious chili.
Mile Marker describes their Mile Marker 82 Islamorada IPA: “ Featuring Centennial & Sterling hops, Mile Marker 82 has lots of hop flavor and aroma but is easy on the bitterness. An IPA perfectly suited for Florida weather. Offers floral and citrus notes. Perfect for the first-time IPA'er or seasoned connoisseur.”

Although not as busy as the Fleming Island location was the previous Monday evening, Taps in St. Johns is a great place to visit – especially if you are in that neck of the woods.

Thanks to TeamHopHeads and Taps in St. Johns for a wonderful experience and to Marc and Kristi for the ride!

Brews & Chews before Texas ...

Companion was going to be out of town for a little over a week beginning Saturday, so we decided we had better get with the group a couple of times before he left. Thursday (Mar 8), we met everyone over at Kickbacks Gastropub for a beer … or two …

Sorry - photo doesn't do it justice
Southwestern Egg Rolls
We ordered some of Kickbacks Southwestern Egg Rolls (yummers!) and shared Terrapin Beer's Big Hoppy Monster and Cigar City Brewing's Jai Alai IPA.

Terrapin's website describes the Big Hoppy Monster:

“This mammoth imperial red ale leads with a tantalizing hop aroma that is quickly complemented by an enormous malt backbone & finished with a multitude of hoppy goodness.”

Note: 8.75% ABV – 73 IBUs

Cigar City describes the Jai Alai:

Pours copper in color with notes of citrus and tropical fruit in the aroma. Flavor has upfront citrus bitterness with a hint of caramel and citrus and tropical fruit hop notes in the finish.“

The group had to go our separate ways early for various reasons but many thanks to Steve Flores and his crew at Kickback's Gastropub for continuing to provide a wonderful “home away from home”.

After bidding all but Vince farewell at Kickbacks, companion and I took him over to Alphadog Grill – a place we had been wanting to try.

Alpha Dog's Deep Fried
'artery slammin' Twinkie
I had viewed their online menu and was intrigued by their dessert, “Deep Fried Twinkie” ! … oh yeah, that's what I'm feelin' – deep fried twinkie!

Alphadog Grill describes this decadent delight: “Golden brown and sprinkled with powdered sugar served with raspberry cream dipping sauce” - $4.75

Yes, it was ever so good! … amazing carnival smell and flavor – just like when I was a little girl …

Add caption
Companion outdid himself by ordering Alphadog's Tatos, described on their website:
“Thick sliced potato chips battered and fried and seasoned with onion and garlic. Served with ranch dressing -$4.25

Sitting on the patio at Alphadog Grill
with Bold City Duke's Cold Nose Ale.
We all ordered a Bold City Cold Nose Brown Ale, described on Bold City's website: “This is a mild brown ale which is easily drinkable. A Slight nuttiness and sweetness are present.”

If you have not been to Alphadog Grill, boot-scoot over there and give it a try! … and remember, you must order the deep fried twinkie for dessert!

The night before companion left on his trip, Friday (March 9), we were in the mood for Dim Sum. We have recently been going to Silver Star for this type of food – and we were not disappointed, once again. The Dim Sum was fresh and customer service there is always superb! …

We then decided to have one brew over at Intuition to end the evening. Brian, Hannah and Robin were there and were spectacular, as usual.

Not relishing the thought of companion being away for so long – and driving over 2500 miles, I'm not sure I truly remember what we ordered. However, I can remember, both of our beers were excellent, as they always are, at Intuition Ale Works.

Thanks to Brian, Hannah and Robin for making us feel at home and for providing a comfortable end to a somber Jax Brew Bitch evening.

Bell's Brewery, Ballast Point and Mile Marker Brewing ...

Tom with TeamHopHeads
pouring Bell's Brewery
I'm all for enjoying good brews starting mid-afternoon but I knew getting the Jeep over to Engine 15 for the Bell's Brewery Tasting (sponsored by TeamHopHeads) beginning at 4:00 pm was going to be a challenge. Once companion got home and we could get over there, it was at least 5:45 pm … a late arrival, we knew, for a tasting event at Engine 15! … the traffic … aggravating … didn't these motorists realize there was a girl on a brew-inspired mission trying to hop over their vehicles to get to the other side of town?

Not surprisingly, the supply of the tasty Hopslam Ale was already depleted, but I was able to sample Bell's Kalamazoo Stout and Two Hearted IPA.

The Hopslam Ale is described on Bell's website: “Starting with six different hop varietals added to the brew kettle & culminating with a massive dry-hop addition of Simcoe hops, Bell's Hopslam Ale possesses the most complex hopping schedule in the Bell's repertoire. Selected specifically because of their aromatic qualities, these Pacific Northwest varieties contribute a pungent blend of grapefruit, stone fruit, and floral notes. A generous malt bill and a solid dollop of honey provide just enough body to keep the balance in check, resulting in a remarkably drinkable rendition of the Double India Pale Ale style.”

Bell's describes the Kalamazoo Stout as: "Kalamazoo Stout represents stouts in the Bell's year-round roster, offering a blend of dark chocolate and coffee flavors with just a hint of brewer's licorice. One of our oldest recipes, it balances a significant hop presence against the roast malt body."

Since I knew TeamHopHeads was also sponsoring a Ballast Point Tasting at the Rendevous Restaurant in St. Augustine, we decided to make our visit short there at Engine 15 and get the Jeep headed south before it was too late.

Thanks to Tom with TeamHopHeads and Engine 15 for the Bell's Brewery Tasting! – selfishly, next time, could it possibly start a little later in the day for those of us starting our prowl from the other side of town?

James with TeamHopHeads
Finally flying south along I-95, we were unaware of the exact location of Rendevous Restaurant though the name sounded distinctly familiar. Since it was a restaurant, we planned on getting a bite once we arrived. Upon reaching St. Augustine, I went ahead and called the establishment, who gave me detailed directions to its location, 106 St. George St., at the end of one of those cute little shopping malls along that historic avenue.

On our arrival, we realized we had been to Rendevous before, pre-Jax Brew Bitch, and enjoyed a couple of the nearly 200 hundred bottled beers available there.

Our hostess Sarah with owner of
Rendezvous Restaurant, William Smith
We were immediately met by James of TeamHopHeads who confirmed he was in charge of the Ballast Point Tasting and provided our first sample, the Big Eye IPA …. WOW! … excellent Big Eye-Poppin' flavor! …

Ballast Point described the Big Eye in the following manner: “If you have fallen for the IPA style like we have, Big Eye will be a welcome addition to your repertoire.  You’ll revel in Big Eye’s bitter, hoppy flavor thanks to the American Columbus and Centennial hops that are used to flavor and dry hop our flagship IPA.”

Note: 7.0% ABV, 75 IBUs

The tasting did what I assume it is supposed to do: prompted companion and I to order a pint each of the Big Eye, which was also available on tap that evening.

Ballast Point's Big Eye
James next offered the Wahoo Wheat Beer by Ballast Point which is probably very popular with those who favor wheat beers. Ballast Point states: “Summer days and ocean waves inspired our Belgian Witbier-styled Wahoo Wheat. Brewed to be light and refreshing—with a unique citrus character that comes from adding orange peel and coriander to the boil … What gives our Wahoo Wheat—and other wheat beers—a hazy appearance is the unmalted wheat it’s made from. A special yeast contributes to this beer’s refreshing tangy flavor—quite different from the banana and clovey Hefeweizens of Bavaria. If you want to be surprised what deliciousness can come from wheat, oats and barley, try one today.”

However, I have not yet developed a taste for wheat beers, so I was looking forward to the next sample. Giddy up, James!

The next sample provided by James was Ballast Point's Victory at Sea Coffee Vanilla Imperial Porter (10% ABV!).  Hello, my love! … this was my favorite – without any doubt. Can't say enough about this brew … you've got to try it as soon as you can. Obviously it is a special offering – not included on Ballast Point's website. Further research yielded the following description:

“Two of the world’s oldest beverages join forces to conquer your palate. Victory at Sea embodies the art of masterful brewing by infusing a velvety Imperial Porter with pure vanilla flavor and specially selected, hand roasted coffee. The addition of cold brewed coffee to the beer lends a subtle roasted flavor to this robust imperial porter blending perfectly with rich vanilla and caramel undertones. By uniting two San Diego brewing traditions, Caffe Calabria freshly brewed coffee and Ballast Point beer, we have successfully created an artisanal masterpiece.”

Ballast Point's Black Marlin Porter was next up. A full robust Porter, its eye-opening front-end was followed by a smooth and almost sweet finish. If I had not already tried the Victory at Sea, this would have been my choice for the most enjoyable.

Their website describes the Black Marlin Porter: “Like dessert? You’ll love this: Black Marlin Porter with apple pie a la mode—try it! Black Marlin is a rich, dark and chocolaty Porter with a distinctive American hop character. It is a great beer to go with hearty foods and is surprisingly one of the few beers that goes well with dessert”
We were a little disappointed the kitchen closes very early – we were hungry but we would have to wait until after the Tasting to find another establishment at which we could obtain something to eat. I was a little surprised to learn the kitchen schedule is the same weekday and weekend … not sure why … however, Rendezvous Restaurant is a great place and I will definitely be returning on future prowls.

Thanks to William Smith and his lovely wife, Kimberly owners of Rendevous and James from TeamHopHeads for providing a wonderful Jax Brew Bitch experience!

Greeted by Houston
We found a delicious calzone to share at a nearby cafe and soon we were headed for Mile Marker Brewery located at 3420 Agricultural Center Drive in St. Augustine. We had visited there before with friends (see earlier blog posting) and had been wanting to try their new brews.

Upon arrival and exiting the Jeep, I was excitedly greeted by Houston, one of the two official canine ambassadors of Mile Marker Brewing. Owner Vance was standing just outside the door of the brewery and warmly welcomed us.  He then informed us they would be open until 11:00 pm that night … WooHoo! …

Coconut Porter and the
Pecan Brown Ale
Sliding into comfy stools at the bar, we wasted no time ordering the Pecan Brown Ale and the Coconut Porter.

The few sips of Mile Marker's Pecan Brown Ale I sampled from companion's glass was delicious – and the nutty flavor was noticeable but subtle – a very smooth brew.  This is one Vance had indicated in our earlier visits would be making its appearance in the near future. Welcome, Pecan Brown Ale! …

Another new brew which Vance had indicated during my last visit to Mile Marker was “coming soon” was the Coconut Porter. I was excited to learn it was available that evening! … you are missing out if you have not tried this Porter! … it was SO good! … I can imagine Mr. Howell enjoying one of these on Gilligan's Island.

Our beautiful hostess, Jackie and
Tap Room Manager Ben Stamps
Since I was there, I just HAD to split their signature 1565 Ancient City Red Ale with companion – a favorite from my earlier prowl through this brewery. Mile Marker's website describes it: “Featuring Willamette hops, Mile Marker 1565 is a full-flavored, roasted and nutty Irish Red Ale with caramel notes. A perfect choice for when the weather turns a bit cooler during the winter months in northern Florida. Goes great with a good steak.” …

Companion! … get thee to a Butchery … and fetch me a Porterhouse! … I see a Growler of 1565 Red in my future.

Jackie, moi and Ben Stamps
Mile Marker Brewery is such a comfortable place – you MUST put it on your list of destinations. The owners and staff there are gracious, professional and passionate about their brews. Quality is not just a word included in marketing forums and advertising venues – it is something they obviously live and breathe – and rest assured your visit and hard-earned dollar are appreciated at THIS establishment. They “get it” - they understand to create  and keep a customer, you must do ALL those things which make people WANT to do business with you – as Ted Levitt said, “All other truths on this subject are merely derivative”.  This indeed bodes well for the future of Mile Marker Brewery.

Vance introduced me to Ben Stamps and Jackie, our beautiful and friendly hostess for the evening. I had a lengthy discussion with Ben, who was gracious enough to indulge me a few questions and I learned Mile Marker would like to be statewide within two years and up the coast within five.

Concerning quality, he added:

We have had to dump our share of beer down the drain for various reasons. We don't have a huge repertoire of beers as of right now but the beers that we do make we feel that we do them very well. Quality over quantity as it were. We are a small operation and we feel that we will be able to produce more beers as we grow. That being said the beer that we do produce we have very specific standards that if they aren't met gets dumped down the drain.”

Now, that's walkin' the talk!

Ben maintains there is a “Great Awakening about craft beer” and that many long-time beer drinkers are “straying away” from the “beer of their youth” for the now more-readily-available crafts. Why? - because they LIKE the craft beer. So, think about it – what was your usual beer? – most probably the mass-produced brews which the advertising gurus of the day beat into your brain as being “the best”.

Do your own taste test - take a sip of one of Mile Marker's offerings and then take a swig of the mass-produced liquid of your youth probably still available at every grocery store and convenience store in America. C'mon – you know its not even close! … Mile Marker's brews win hands-down.

Modestly, Ben and Vance do not individualize the “Great Awakening” to center on Mile Marker singularly – but I beg to differ. There is indeed growing acclaim for the quality products being created by Mile Marker Brewing … as a recent exciting example, St. Augustine's very popular restaurant/bar, Scarlett O”Hara's, has replaced their tap of Miller Lite with Mile Marker Brewing's Kolsch Mile Marker Zero! … Righteous! … congratulations to all at Mile Marker! … Well done!

Upcoming events include a triathlon at the tap room Memorial Day … stay tuned!

Jacksonvillians, do yourself a favor - get out of the norm, step into your buggy or climb aboard your motorized steed and head south a little to St. Augustine. Take the exit for the outlet malls, turn right and immediately left … follow that road on around until you see Mile Marker Brewery ... and Houston … waiting there to show YOU just how much they appreciate your visit.

A sincere and heartfelt Jax Brew Bitch “thank you” to Vance, Ben, Jackie and all the other staff at Mile Marker Brewery for making us feel so welcome, taking the time to talk with me – and for providing the best possible end to a fantastic Jax Brew Bitch prowl!

Blue Moon Tasting at Tap's Bar & Grill & Birthday wishes to Brewers Pizza

A Monday night beer event? … count me in! … learning about a Blue Moon tasting at Taps Bars & Grill at Fleming Island (1605 County Road 220) got my motor runnin' and the Jeep a-rollin' south to sample three new beers brewed by the Blue Moon Brewing Company. Equally exciting was this gave me a chance to visit Taps – something we've been wanting to do for quite awhile.

Hanging with the Springfield Brew Crew
First impression was encouraging! … met by a very friendly hostess, we noticed that Springfield Brew Crew Marc Wisdom and Kristi were already there, having had dinner consisting of what was reportedly a great prime rib and a scrumptious cheeseburger (we were wishin' we hadn't eaten at home prior to going!).

The tasting was being provided by TeamHopHeads and I was
pleased to see David Rigdon (Champion Brands and TeamHopHeads) overseeing the sampling and voting. Votes were being cast for the favorite brew of the three and the “winner” is destined to be this year's seasonal release by Blue Moon on August 31, 2012. So, what were the three beers? …. Caramel Apple Spiced Ale, Blackberry Tart Ale and … be still my heart … Dark Chocolate Bacon Porter! …

Tap's Patrons showing us how the
metered Tap's table works. What a
novel idea!
Both companion and I voted for the Dark Chocolate Bacon Porter, of course – the heavenly combination of the fruit of the cacao tree … and a pig. Seriously, Blue Moon states, “This deep-mahogany colored ale is brewed with hickory-smoked bacon and dark chocolate for a slightly sweet yet savory taste.” … to me, the chocolate was a definite undertone but the bacon flavor was strong which I loved … I'm a Cajun girl and pork fat rules!

Blue Moon describes the Caramel Apple Spiced Ale as “a blend of cinnamon and nutmeg combined with roasted caramel malts and fresh apple juice for a warming, spiced taste.” … I noticed the apple juice and cinnamon a bit more than anything – good, to be sure – I just preferred the darker porter.

upcoming Ale Angel on JBB
The Blackberry Tart Ale, an interesting and tasty concoction, is described by Blue Moon as “The aroma of rich blackberries sets up the slightly sweet yet tart taste that's balanced by the subtle malt character.” … hello, blackberries! … which I love, by the way … this brew was certainly different and I am sure it will attract and keep a following …

While sampling the three offerings from Blue Moon, companion and I shared a pint of the Dark Chocolate Bacon Porter and one of our favorites, Terrapin Beer Company's Hopsecutioner described on their website “This Killer IPA earns its name by using six different types of hops while still remaining an aggressive well balanced beer.” “Hoppy” it is – and take note of the 7.3% ABV and 78 IBUs!

Thanks to Taps Bar & Grill in Fleming Island, David Rigdon and TeamHopHeads for a memorable Monday night Jax Brew Bitch treat!

Having overheard a fellow patron mention that it was Brewer's Pizza's birthday that evening, we decided to continue our prowl there with Springfield Brew Crew Marc Wisdom and Kristi. Another first visit for me and companion – and another place we've had on our list for a while.

We were a tad hungry but unfortunately, the kitchen had just closed at Brewer's Pizza when we arrived.

Black hOPS IPA on the left
and the Tailhook Brown Ale
What a great place, though! … friendly atmosphere and pleasant staff combined with fine brews and reportedly good food makes this a place we will soon return.

Companion and I shared the Black hOPS Black IPA and Tailhook Brown Ale, both brewed in-house by Brewer's Pizza's sister company Pinglehead Brewing Company.

The Black hOPS is 7.0% ABV and described as “Hop bomb, roasted chocolate malts” - an eye-opening taste sensation on the front end.

The Tailhook Brown Ale is described as “Florida Wildflower honey, strong earthy hops.” and has a 7.3% ABV.  Smooth, this one will sneak up on you … watch out!

A fellow patron suggested we try another in-house brew, the Moon Dance Sweet Stout, a “Rich Chocolate, Sweet oats, Silky Body “ brew with a 7.0% ABV. A great suggestion – ready to kiss him for mentioning it -  this is something I will definitely order again in the near future.

I can't wait to try their calzones and pizza, too! … thanks to the staff at Brewer's Pizza for being so gracious to us that evening – we'll be back with the gang on a future Jax Brew Bitch prowl!

Our Beer Bud, Eddie at
Kickback's Gastropub
Now starving, we parted company with Springfield Brew Crew Marc Wisdom and Kristi and just said “KBs” to the Jeep. We were soon parked close to Kickbacks Gastropub and entering the establishment to end this beer-laden prowl.

Eddie was our server for the evening and he did a magnificent job of providing top-notch service!

Continued education ...
yes ... that's right. I drink sideways.
Companion and I ordered the Breakfast Platter No.1 – eggs, sausage, toast, taters and a waffle. Of course, one cannot be at Kickbacks and not have a beer on the table – so, we shared Stone Brewing Company's Double Bastard Ale. Heaven help me – 10.5% ABV. Thank goodness the massive amount of breakfast food was making its way to us soon … breakfast platter at that time of night is quite simply an appreciated blessing – and thank you to Steve and his crew at Kickbacks for providing yet another wonderful end to an exciting Jax Brew Bitch evening!
