Bold City Brewery taps into Fall and Jax never missed a beat ...

Martha Graham
Martha Graham was the first dancer ever to perform at the White House … wow, can you imagine? … what an honor that must have been …

However, Martha Graham had a lifetime full of honors and awards including being regarded as the “Picasso of Dance” due to her influence in that artistic form and choreography. She also won the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the “Key to the City of Paris” and the Japanese Imperial “Order of the Precious Crown”. She also founded the Martha Graham Dance Company, which outlived this accomplished and talented mega-star, now the oldest dance company in the United States.

She once said, “Great dancers are not great because of their technique, they are great because of their passion.”

In retrospect, last night (Thursday, Oct 4) was an evening filled with watching others as they performed magnificently  - all motivated by their passion. No, nothing pornographic here, so “git yer minds outta the gutter” …

Bold City Brewery (2670 Rosselle St  - 904.379-6551) was having a special tapping of a cask of a Maple and Caramel Pumpkin Spiced Ale – only 5 gallons would be available – so, companion and I had arranged our schedule to arrive at Bold City before the doors opened at 3:00 pm to make sure we were lucky enough to get a pint.

Although the weather had turned and rain was pouring down upon us and the other loyal Bold City patrons, as soon as owner Brian Miller unlocked the door, about a dozen fellow beer-lovers invaded the taproom – many more were on their way.

The group of “early arrivers” included Gary and Jackson (talented and motivated home brewers), Keith Kimball and Allison Lang (performing duo who are also part of Firewater Tent Revival), Jay and Tiffany (masterful home brewers) with friends Ryan and John Allmand, a local and very talented artist who's work is now featured at CoRK Arts District. Following soon were Mark Corbin and Mike Lichtenfels  (beer critics of great renown), Robin (beer-bringer extraordinaire at the Brewer's Pizza Bottle Sharing events) and Ed Stansel (co-author of Amber Waves and multi-awarded home brewer who took home beaucoup bling from the latest CASK First Coast Cup). Ed is also the “Uncle Ed” noted on the Bold City board as the namesake of “Uncle Ed's Belgian IPA” - available there at Bold City Brewery.

Brian and Susan Miller at Bold City Brewery
Companion and I ordered a pint each of the special Maple and Caramel Pumpkin Spiced Ale cask offering. Sweet, a little spicy and for which Ed Stansel nailed the taste – “like liquid candy corn”! … so delicious and unique!

Owner Susan Miller had a large plastic container filled with Rice Crispy Treats made with pumpkin-flavored marshmallows which she suggested to Brian he open for those in attendance. Brian was a little hesitant to do so immediately since he believed the treats may overshadow the flavor of the Maple and Caramel Pumpkin Spiced Ale. We tried to hold off, we really did – but we finally gave in to the temptation. The treats were fabulous!

Companion was hungry, so we shared a Pulled Pork Sandwich from Vernon of Jolly Mon Catering, the in-house grill master of Bold City. Complete with side dishes of beans and homemade coleslaw, at $6.00, you really would be hard pressed to find a better deal.

Following our special cask pints, companion and I ordered the new Pumpkin Ale and a pint of:

Ed Stansel, writer for Jacksonville Times
Union & Amber Waves
Bold City Brewery 1901 Red Ale
This is not your standard Red Ale. This is a very ‘malty’, ‘roasty’ and complex Red Ale. The roasted flavor comes from the high presence of roasted barley. With a very minimal but high alpha hop addition, this Red Ale has become a favorite among patrons.
After visiting a couple of tables and milling around a bit, we had settled in at a table with Keith and Allison. We learned that later that evening, these two would be performing at Open Mic Night at a local watering hole. They also invited us to come share a roast they had been cooking all day in a Crock Pot – of course, we jumped at the chance!

Whole Wheat Bread's Will Frazier
As I was finishing off my Pumpkin Ale, I watched the family, Will and the rest of the team who own and manage Bold City Brewery as they took care of customers and joked around lovingly with each other . I realized I was beholding an organization founded and run on passion – passion for their craft – passion for their team – and passion for their customers. How fortunate we are here in Jacksonville to have the Millers, their extended family and loyal staff – all dedicated so earnestly to our community.

Be sure and make plans to come to Bold City Brewery's Fourth Anniversary Party on October 20, 2012 from 1:00 to 11:00 pm. Let's all turn out to show them how much the Greater Jacksonville craft beer community appreciates their commitment to each of us.

Jolly Mon Catering
Companion and I were then blessed with the opportunity of sharing a couple of quiet hours with Keith and Allison at their home while we shared great fellowship, Uncle Ed's Belgian IPA (I had filled a growler earlier that evening at Bold City), some white wine, cheese from Grassroots Natural Market and an outstanding pot roast!  … we also got to meet their “babies” - Marley and Dottie (lovable canines) and Kipper, the Cat!

The watering hole they were headed to in order to take advantage of Open Mic Night was Yesterday's Social Club (3638 Park Street – 904.387.0502). As time approached for their performance, companion and I excused ourselves while they packed and we agreed to meet them there.

Located next to Orsay, there is some parking on the street in front and a large unpaved parking area in the rear.

The place is huge and consists two sections – one with a bar, pool tables, darts, etc. and the other dedicated to performances with a large stage, another large wrap-around bar and large seating area / dance floor. Yes, a good scrubbing might be in order, but nothing just a little attention couldn't handle.

Although smoking is allowed, it was not overpowering to us. The bar is cash-only but an ATM is available.

I was impressed that there was Bold City Brewery Duke's Cold Nose Brown Ale and Killer Whale Cream Ale available on tap along with two different options brewed by the SweetWater Brewing Company. Yesterday's Social Club also offers Intuition Ale Works People's Pale Ale in cans.

On Thursday evenings, you can get a great deal at this establishment! … not only can you be entertained by some highly talented musicians who call Jacksonville their home but it is also Ladies Night where ladies drink free from 9:00 to 11:00 pm.

Keith & Allison at Yesterday's Social Club
Companion was going to order a pint of Duke's Cold Nose Brown Ale but our friendly and helpful bartender Nick suggested we opt for a pitcher since the pitcher is only $10! ... Great suggestion and I decided to split the pitcher with companion in lieu of choosing free beer from their mass-produced inventory. Now, we all know free beer is always good – but I didn't want to stray from craft brews this evening.

Keith and Allison would be taking the stage following the passionate and inspired performances of three other musicians / duets. All the performers that evening were impressive and entertaining. When Keith and Allison started their set, it was obvious this couple has a passion for music – both are capable of playing more than one instrument and the small late-night crowd there was obviously enjoying this couple as they displayed their musical talent.

As I mentioned before, Keith and Allison are also part of a larger band, Firewater Tent Revival, who had appeared at the recent Beaches Summer Fest 2012, benefiting the MDA. You can also catch them at various places around the town, so check their Facebook page!

This couple are meant for the stage – and strive to better themselves with frequently scheduled practice sessions and Open Mic Nights to hone their musical craft. You can see it in their faces – and hear it in their music.

Firewater Tent Revival's, Keith & Allison
As the evening drew to a close, I was thinking about Martha Graham  - and inner passion – and how it had played out before me that night – earlier at Bold City Brewery and here with all the performers at Yesterday's Social Club.

We are so blessed as humans to not be like cows – bovine creatures who wake up in a new world every five minutes. As humans, we have the ability to become motivated by an inner passion. My hope is that all the purveyors of brews and chews in the Greater Jacksonville area will become motivated in this way and not lose the focus of their efforts.

It is unfortunate some never “hear the music”. My wish is that they will though, one day – my prayer is that we ALL do – and when we “hear the music”, that we NOT back even one small step away from the stage.

Let's all just get up and dance.

My sincere appreciation to Nick for his insightful suggestion and to Keith and Allison for opening their home – and Crock Pot – and passion - to us, making this, our first visit to Yesterday's Social Club, a perfect last note on this evening's Jax Brew Bitch Prowl.

"Team Vinyl" invades Birdies

According to companion, to be considered an experienced aficionado of music in the early 70's, one must have gone through the trouble of researching (at the stores and through peer discussions - pre-Internet)  the latest and best, full-featured “Quadraphonic” stereo system - only after making sure one had stashed enough cash away to purchase it. “Quadraphonic” was considered the best - the standard of the day – linked marketing-wise with “pure” sound - and possession of anything less meant you dabbled in peasantry.

Of course, after one had procured the “top available” system and had set it up to combine aesthetically with the blacklight posters of Jimi Hendrix and couples engaged in … uh … “wrestling” ... dressing-up the bare bedroom walls, the obligatory envy-green pilgrimage of your friends over to applaud your music appreciation acumen began.

Listening to music WITHOUT such a substantial investment of time and money would make the experience hollow – defined in that era as a “Class A - 14-carat, fuel-injected drag, man”.  Certainly, for effect, you must drag out the word “drag” -  “drrrraaggggggg” and then finish it off with the the 70's “man” which at that time apparently possessed a few extra n's (mannnn).

Companion said many an hour was spent in his youth tethered to his stereo system by the umbilical headphones cord and CRANKIN' the hits – and thereby losing some hearing, he now adds.

Music in his day consisted mainly of vinyl albums – many with lyrics printed on the inside of multi-paneled covers (he said you really needed the lyrics for Mick Jagger songs). Eight-track cassettes had come onto the scene but he said even then, that “new” technology left something to be desired but WAS handy to use as “skirt-bait” in his '66 Mustang Fastback.

He was sharing all of this Sunday (June 3) while we sat inside Birdies (1044 Park Street  - 904.356.4444 ) just down from the Sun Ray Cinema (the old 5 Points Theater). We had gone out earlier for some lunch and wanted to do something before we went back home.

Having been to Birdies before, we knew there would probably be something on tap we liked and decided to make our way there. As we had approached the establishment, we noted a significant crowd outside. Fortunate to find a parking spot close by, we were soon in the midst of the happy, energetic collection of patrons.

There were tables set up outside in the covered patio-seating area all covered with boxes of vinyl records – being bought, sold and traded – by and with vinyl enthusiasts.

We entered to make our selection of beer at the bar and noticed there were even more tables and enthusiasts inside admiring and purchasing the vinyl offerings left and right. The music being appropriately blasted from the speakers had been very popular in earlier decades and set the perfect mood as we sat down with our beers – two glasses of SweetWater Brewing Company's 420 Extra Pale Ale described on SweetWater's website:

“SweetWater 420 Extra Pale Ale, our most popular brew, is a tasty West Coast Style Pale Ale with a stimulating hop character and a crisp finish. 1st brewed on April 20th 1997.” - Note: 5.4% ABV

JBB Notes: Popular indeed! … I see it everywhere now – even in the beer section of Wally-World!

Christina Wagner was our friendly and efficient bartender that day! … for those of you who don't know, Christina sings and plays guitar and has attracted quite a following. See the link to her Facebook page below! … Christina informed me this group of vinyl collectors and sellers converges on Birdies every two months and offer their vinyl records for sale to the public!

I noted to companion that I had read that vinyl was making a comeback in the recording industry – something which made him even a little bit happier sitting in our booth enjoying the tunes and brews  … he said there is something about that subtle snap, crackle and pop a needle produces tracking vinyl grooves. I could tell he was “diggin' it” as he tapped his fingers on the table and drank his beer

I was “diggin' it”, too! … great folks and fun, tasty beer and “solid” tunes! … I spoke to one of the vinyl vendors and he explained the group's usual schedule and his own pricing guidelines.

You can find some phenomenal albums for as little as $1 – and you could spend $20 or more for some rare “oldies”. Without a doubt, there are bargains galore for the vinyl enthusiast.

No food is served at Birdies and smoking is allowed – but the air is certainly not repugnant. The restrooms are a hoot – check out the doors – covered in pennies. Companion said the Mens restroom's walls are being covered in beer bottle caps, floor to ceiling. A unique touch to add to this interesting bar which also has a room for pool tables. Adequate attention had been paid to cleaning and stocking of the restrooms, so no Bitch Slap there.

I was certainly pleased with the whole experience. We had arrived rather late-event that day, so we vowed to make it near the start of the next time “Team Vinyl” invades Birdies. I'm already saving up so I can pick up some albums I USED to have in my youth – and thought were lost forever.

After finishing our beer, we slowly made our way out, taking some quick last looks at the records on display. Settling into The Beast, companion asked me what I thought of the Birdies Vinyl Event.

I smiled and responded, “That was righteous, bro …. and outta-sight!”

A hearty high-fisted “RIGHT ON !” to the group of vinyl vendors for bringing out so much phenomenal inventory -  and sincere thanks to Christina, the ownership and the rest of the staff at Birdies for providing a unique event and “FAR OUT !”  Jax Brew Bitch destination!

It was “Quadraphonic”, mannnn!

Kicking-off ACBW at Engine 15 & Poe's Tavern with Highland Brewing Event

Mai Queen nominee proving
 mad skills at
Engine 15 Brewing Company
Alexander Pope was an 18th Century English poet known for his translations of Homer's The Iliad and The Odyssey. It was he who wrote in one of his poems, A little learning is a dangerous thing; Drink deep, or taste not the Pierian spring. …. okay, okay … no, I don't sit around and read poetry all day, but Pope's satire is well-known and his quotes are still used in the modern day.  I became fixated on the “Drink deep, or taste not ...” segment, of course – and decided to apply the concept at the beer tasting event being managed that Tuesday evening (May 14) by Carolyn Lowrey Graham of Brown Distributing at Engine 15 Brewing Company (1500 Beach Boulevard – Jax Beach – 904.249.2337).

We made our way over to Engine 15 early enough so there was an ample supply of beer being provided as samples to those who wished to try the various beers on display. As we entered, I noticed Carolyn speaking with Engine 15 customers and pouring samples, respectively.
Carolyn, JBB, owner & brewer Luch and Chris, miming
The "look away" at Engine 15 Brewing Company
Carolyn was featuring the following beer of the Southeast for American Craft Beer Week from:

SweetWater Brewing Company – Atlanta, GA

Red Brick Brewing Company – Atlanta, GA

Cigar City Brewing – Tampa, FL

Highland Brewing Company – Asheville, NC

Tequesta Brewing Company – Tequesta, FL

Keeping in mind my motivation for the evening, companion and I ordered and “deeply drank” the following Cigar City Brewing offerings (descriptions per Cigar City's website):

Cigar City's Puppy's Breath Robust
Porter & the Minaret ESB on Nitro
Puppy's Breath Robust Porter
Dark in color with a ruby hue with forward notes of chocolate and caramel and light toffee notes in the aroma. Flavor has big notes of bittersweet chocolate with notes of caramel and toffee and moderate hop bitterness and more caramel and toffee and slight hints of char. A big take on a classic style.“ - 8.0% ABV – 40 IBUs

JBB Notes: A robust Porter you'll be barking for! … wonderfully in-your-face smoky chocolate flavor!

Minaret Extra Special Bitter (ESB) On Nitro
Pours amber in color with notes of caramel and slight hints of red delicious apple in the aroma. Flavor has a moderate earthy and herbal hop bitterness followed by moderate caramel notes that are subdued by floral hop bitterness in the finish. A damn good and authentic ESB.“ - 5.0% ABV – 47 IBUs

JBB Notes: Noticed and thoroughly the apple influence in this ESB and maybe a slight floral note. Only the second ESB I have had – definitely looking forward to more of the Minaret and others in the future!

Engine 15 Brewing Company was quite busy that evening but Caleb, Mol and Kevin were, as always, efficient and friendly in their superior service – a great crew, indeed! … Engine 15 continues to excel at knowing what their customers want – and then exceeding the customers' expectations in the delivery!

Although I would like to have stayed longer, commitments beckoned and we needed to head that way. Thank you to Carolyn of Brown Distributing and the crew at Engine 15 Brewing Company for an enjoyable beer-related special event!

A dream within a dream ...
Springfield Brew Crew Marc Wisdom and Kristi had joined us during the beer tasting event at Engine 15 and we were all headed over to Poe's Tavern ((363 Atlantic Blvd - Atlantic Beach – 904.241.7637) for a Highland Brewing event.

The namesake of this establishment, Edgar Allan Poe was once quoted

“Man's real life is happy, chiefly because he is ever expecting that it soon will be so.”

A “high-five” to Edgar because MY life was happy since I was certainly expecting an enjoyable experience at Poe's Tavern because of all the good things we had heard about it!

Our servers, Chris and Blake
with E.A. Poe looking on.
Carolyn had accompanied us in the Jeep over from Engine 15 and she led is into the restaurant. We were courteously directed to the proper table and soon Chris and Blake made their appearance as our friendly, informative and efficient servers for the evening.

The two Highland Brewing Company brews being featured that evening were (descriptions per Highland Brewing's website):

Highland Brewing's Gaelic Ale &
the Little Hump Spring Ale

Little Hump Spring Ale
“Little Hump is an American Pale Ale that is meticulously handcrafted for full floral hop aroma and flavor. Brewed with grains from America's heartland - Simcoe for bittering, Amarillo and Cascade (both dry hopped) for aromatics - this beer finishes crisp and clean.” - 4.5% ABV – 32 IBUs

JBB Notes: Surprisingly strong but not offensive aroma – got past that and it was a very pleasant tasting light bodied ale with enough hop to make me glad I was able to try it! … apparently, the supply in this area is soon going to be gone ...

and

Kirsten demonstrating the Randall
Highland Gaelic Ale
“A deep amber colored American ale, featuring a rich malty body. Cascade and Willamette hops add a complex hop flavor and aroma. This ale is exceptionally balanced between malty sweetness and delicate hop bitterness. It has a universal appeal and is our workhorse, accounting for about half of our total production. The dark amber color is similar to a Scottish Ale but the flavor and body is more in the style of American amber.” - 5.6% ABV – 30 IBUs from the brewery

JBB Notes: Gaelic Amber Ale is a staple at Poe's Tavern but that night they were running it thru a Randal with Cascade hops ladling a little more eye-opening hop to the top! …

As I mentioned, we had heard so many good things about Poe's Tavern, we had to try one of their burgers, so companion and I ordered and shared a Black Cat Burger, described on the Poe's Tavern website:

Poe's Tavern, Black Cat Burger
(please note, no felines were harmed
in the making of this succulent beast)
“Grilled Onions, Edgar's Drunken Chili, Applewood Bacon and Pimiento Cheese” - JBB Notes: be still, my tell-tale heart! … this was incredibly delicious – served with our selection of Hand-Cut French Fries as a side.

I just love the décor of Poe's Tavern – lighting, art and accents combine to make Poe's Tavern a great place for a date. Add to that a significant food menu with top quality selections and a great bar, Poe's Tavern will be a certain hit with the one you're with!

I excused myself to “powder” before we left and I was very impressed with the clean and well-stocked restroom. Companion later confirmed the same was true in the other one, as well.

Edgar Allan Poe is
watching you drink
I must say once inside the ladies restroom, I suddenly had the feeling I had entered the wrong one for I heard a man's voice reading The Raven by Edgar Allan Poe. Visions of a period-suited gentleman reading from a book and standing on a crate in front of the Men’s Room stalls danced in my head! … the unsettling tale stuck with me, though, as I returned to our table. I could not keep from staring at the image of Edgar himself on the wall … his eyes boring holes into my soul … our thoughts linked … our hearts beating in unison ... mesmerized wasn't the word … I …. I ….

“Once upon a midnight dreary, while I traveled home, weak and beery,
Past darkened closing tap rooms and many a shuttered store.
While I nodded, nearly napping, suddenly there came a tapping,
As of some one gently rapping, rapping at my Jeep's front door.
"Tis Tinker Beer," I muttered, "tapping at my Jeep's front door--
Only Tink and nothing more."

Open here I flung the zippered window, when, with many a flirt and flutter,
In there stepped a sexy Fairy of the inebriated days of yore.
Not the least obeisance made she; not a whisper left the lips of she
But, with eyes of mirth at me angled, sat perched upon my dashboard and dangled near my Jeep's front door
Perched upon Hello Kitty just beside my Jeep's front door --
Perched, and sat, and nothing more.

Breaking silence I sought the answer to a vexing I'd encountered sitting up on Poe's Tavern's ladies throne,
A man's voice plainly reading of a Raven not too pleasing, which spoke only one word ripping man to inner core.
I wondered if this was a bad omen – if it meant that tomorrow I would be without any brew – heaven please forbid it to be true -
For the storied ebony winged creature as a demonic and wicked preacher renewed his demented chant of “Nevermore, Nevermore ...”

Tink's head wagged left and right, her eyes dancing prepped for flight,
She stood to speak and spied the open window of my Jeep's front door -
“You worry for no reason for the brews are here all season” said she and then hovered ever closer up to me.
“The day is nigh upon you – on the morrow you'll have some new brew – so, forget that bird, Bitch!” – and then disappeared through the open window of my Jeep's front door – just disappeared and nothing more”

Alexander Pope was SO right – a little learning IS a dangerous thing.

My sincere appreciation to Kirsten Oldham Kelley for a great Highland Brewing Company event and to Chris, Blake and the rest of the crew of Poe's Tavern for making my first visit a very memorable and exciting Jax Brew Bitch experience!

James from Team Hopheads
and Mike enjoying Poe's Tavern
James from TeamHopHeads and his friend Mike were at Poe's Tavern and came by our table to say hello, One thing led to another and we all four decided to head over to Lynch's Irish Pub (514 1st Street North – Jax Beach – 904.249.5181).

This was our first visit to Lynch's and it will certainly not be our last! … I loved it from the minute I walked in – spacious with a good feel to it – amazing bar with a healthy selection of tasty brews to choose from – and a very pleasant server, Alexis!

Companion and I ordered and shared the following two brews (descriptions per breweries' websites):

Angry Orchards Hard Crisp Cider &
Lazy Magnolia's Southern Pecan Nut
Brown Ale
Lazy Magnolia Brewing Company's Southern Pecan Nut Brown Ale

“Southern Pecan Nut Brown Ale is the first beer in the world, to our knowledge, made with whole roasted pecans. The pecans are used just like grain and provide a nutty characteristic and a delightful depth to the flavor profile. This beer is very lightly hopped to allow the malty, caramel, and nutty flavors shine through. The color is dark mahogany. Southern Pecan won a Bronze Medal in the 2006 World Beer Cup in the Specialty Beer category.
Mark is the crazy, creative force behind Lazy Magnolia. He comes up with ideas that often seem to have no chance of succeeding. One of those ideas was to make a beer with pecans. Many attempts at nut-beers have resulted in failure due to the high oil content. Mark was determined, so Leslie designed the recipe to work around the problem of nut oil. Even so, she had very little faith in the creation until they poured the first perfect pint. Southern Pecan has been a big hit ever since.”

Angry Orchard Hard Cider Crisp Apple

Live music at Lynch's Irish Pub
“This crisp and refreshing cider offers sweet apple notes upfront with a subtle dryness at the finish for a balanced cider taste. The addition of Fuji apples adds a layer of complexity and brings out a fresh apple aroma and slightly sweet, ripe apple flavor.” - Note: 5% ABV
“Apple Types: Amere de Berthecourt, Beden, Medaille d’or, Michelin, Binet Rouge, Brairtot Fuji, Golden Delicious, Red Delicious, Joana Gold, Elstar, Granny Smith, Gala, Braeburn”
JBB Notes: Tastes like delicious sweet apple juice – and then provides the wallop you aren't expecting from the 5% ABV

Our visit here was short due to it being a “school night” but I am certainly visiting Lynch's again – when their kitchen is open! … Thanks to Alexis and the bar staff at Lynch's Irish Pub for a delightful first-time experience!
