Stewarding Flights with CASK, Feestdag Waffles, Bottle Sharing and Sushi

EGADS! … starting a fully beer-filled day at 10:00 am in the morning? … sounds wonderful … prachtig ...merveilleux …wunderbar... but how could I pull it off?

Homebrew entries for CASK 5th Annul First Coast Cup
Thus began my Saturday morning (July 21) thoughts after a late-evening Prowl the night before. Arriving home a little before midnight, poor companion had to be up three hours later to take his coworker to the airport and have him there no later than 4:30 am. When he returned from his limo-duty in The Beast, he fell back into bed, only to awaken a little after 7:00 am, knowing he would need to rouse me by 8:30 am.

Ed Stansel has been ever-so-helpful and gracious in inviting me to learn to be a Steward for the upcoming First Coast Cup Homebrew Competition being held next Friday and Saturday at the Sheraton on Baymeadows Drive. Due to conflicting schedules and previous commitments, I had been unable to attend previous Cowford Ale Sharing Klub (CASK) Steward training classes, so I was determined to make this one, schedule to begin at 10:00 am!

Companion prepared eggs and toast for me while I got myself presentable and he offered to drop me off and then tend to gathering the supplies needed for the Belgian-themed Bottle Sharing at Green Room Brewing beginning at 2:00 pm. I felt so bad for him since he had not had much restful sleep and I knew he would be worn out before the day ended.

We arrived at CASK member Shaun's apartment on time and soon all those to be in attendance arrived.

CASK prejudging for FCC
I soon learned that being a Steward is no easy matter! … a particular way to taste and savor beer – how to judge it … how to score it … mannerisms … protocol … policies - like not wearing cologne or perfume – all play a part in being acceptable as a Steward.

WOW! … a lot of information was provided to me in a relatively short time in that training session! … although members of the group had offered to buy lunch, I needed to have companion pick me up so that we could get to the Bottle Sharing meeting at Green Room on time.

I bid farewell to Ed Stansel, Prescott Scaffe, Marshall and Sherri Crews, David Poquette, Shaun Newman, Lukasz Kluz, Mike Lentz, Steve Campbell and the rest of those from CASK and thanked them for the education they provided. My sincere appreciation to Ed Stansel for inviting me and suggesting I learn how to be a Steward. I look forward to the First Coast Cup Homebrew Competition next weekend.

"Oh, Snap" Brown Ale & the Island Girl DIPA
Companion arrived around 1:30 pm with the cooler of beer we would be sharing and the other necessary items – the Belgian Waffle maker, the waffle batter he had blended that morning, butter, syrup, strawberries and Cool Whip. Our destination was Green Room Brewing (228 3rd Street North – Jax Beach – 904.201-9283) where the Bottle Sharing group was scheduled to meet at 2:00 pm.

The reason for the inclusion of the Belgian Waffle maker was that the theme of the Bottle Sharing was Belgian – to commemorate Feestdag, Belgian Independence Day, the day celebrated honoring the country's independence from The Netherlands.

Kathy Corbin had suggested this theme and I decided that we should have Belgian Waffles to accompany the Belgian-style beers many would be bringing to the gathering.

This would be the first Bottle Sharing at Green Room that I would be “heading up” so to speak after originators Mark and Kathy Corbin has asked me to step in for them for awhile. “Heading up” is too heady a phrase, though – it just involves notifying those on the mailing list of upcoming times and confirmations of dates – providing suggestions for any particular themes – and then making sure the tables are set up before and rearranged and cleaned when we leave. I felt honored to be asked by the Corbins and I want to do a good job for them and the group.

It is customary for Bottle Sharing group attendees to purchase a pint of the available drafts at Green Room, so companion and I ordered and split the following two delicious brews:

Green Room Brewing Island Girl DIPA – their Double Overhead aged on Spanish Cedar from cigar boxes!

Green Room Brewing “Oh, Snap!” - fresh candied ginger in a brown ale!

Both were certainly enjoyable on the palate – and I practiced a little of what I learned at CASK. Trish Scott saw me and got me tickled and I almost blew some of the “Oh, Snap!” out my nose. Noticing my coughing and trouble in swallowing (thanks to Trish and David!), companion commented he would keep drinking beer “the old-fashioned way”, noting the new way I had learned was obviously a little dangerous.

In attendance that day were Trish and David Scott, Mike, companion and myself and later, Nora, Mark and Kathy Corbin and our “adopted son” Jonathan Faulkner.

During the get-together, Green Room co-owner Mark Stillman came by and eventually joined us in some of the tastings. With each bottle opening, one of us would run up to the bar so that Jason and/or Molly, both tending to  bar duties that day, could try a sip and we made sure they had a hot Belgian Waffle to share. Mark was gracious enough to spend some time with me discussing Green Room and how much we all miss the presence of Diamond, a truly integral part of the history of the brewery, She was a beloved and revered canine princess and she will always be remembered.

Beers, too numerous to mention, were all shared and all were very tasty and appreciated by the group. Companion did a fine job in preparing the waffles – serving them up hot for all those wishing to have a slice – and making sure there was no leftover mess. The aroma apparently filled the tap room as several patrons came over to find out just what was creating the hunger-inspiring smell.

Kathy, Mark and baby Mad Max
Jason and Molly were efficiently handling the duties behind the bar and they kept a watchful eye on both our group and the other patrons to make sure each person's experience inside Green Room was pleasant and memorable.

As we were finishing off the shared bottles of interesting and tasty beers, the band, Lonesome Bert & The Skinny Lizards starting doing their sound-checks and setting up as the evening's entertainment. We decided it was time to free up the tables, clean up and head out to our next adventure.

My heartfelt appreciation to Jason and Molly for being such gracious hosts and to Mark, Eric and the rest of the team there at Green Room for indulging us this special Bottle Sharing event and for maintaining a warm, inviting atmosphere for my continuing visits during many Jax Brew Bitch Prowls.

Lost Coast Brewery Indica IPA &
Anchor Brewing Steam California Common
It had been awhile since we had visited The Brix Taphouse (300 2nd Street North – Jax Beach – 904.241.4668) and since we were in the area, I decided this might be a good time to stop in, hopefully say hello to Grady and enjoy a beer.

We were able to find a parking spot right across the street from Brix and were soon seated at the huge bar in the center of the establishment. I was pleased to see Day Manager Grady was indeed serving as co-bartender and after discussing our options with him, made the following selections (descriptions per breweries' websites):

Lost Coast Brewery Indica IPA
Indica is a hoppy, full-bodied ale. It has a higher than average alcohol content balanced by radical bittering from Columbus hops, then dry hopped with generous amounts of Willamette and Centennial hop flowers. - Note: 6.5% ABV

Anchor Brewing Steam California Common
Anchor Steam® Beer owes its deep amber color, thick, creamy head, and rich, distinctive flavor to a brewing process like none other.

It is a process that combines deep respect for brewing tradition with many decades of evolution to arrive at a unique approach: a blend of pale and caramel malts, fermentation with lager yeast at warmer ale temperatures in shallow open-air fermenters, and gentle carbonation in our cellars through an all-natural process called kräusening.

Anchor Steam® Beer derives its unusual name from the 19th century when “steam” was a nickname for beer brewed on the West Coast of America under primitive conditions and without ice. While the origin of the name remains shrouded in mystery, it likely relates to the original practice of fermenting the beer on San Francisco’s rooftops in a cool climate. In lieu of ice, the foggy night air naturally cooled the fermenting beer, creating steam off the warm open pans. Once a nickname for any West Coast beer brewed under these conditions, today the name “steam” is a trademark of Anchor Brewing and applies only to the singular process and taste of our flagship brand - San Francisco’s original Anchor Steam® Beer. The classic of American brewing tradition since 1896. - Note: 4.9% ABV

The Brix Taphouse also sells Growlers to Go!
Grady was kind enough to discuss upcoming draft beer selections and specials – stay tuned!

Currently The Brix Taphouse already has outrageous Happy Hours and specials! .,... Everyday from 3 to 8 pm, $3 pints including their craft brews!

It was time to eat, so we thanked Grady for his friendly customer service and focused ourselves on deciding where to find some good chews on our way home.

Thank you to Grady for taking the time to speak with me and to the ownership of The Brix Taphouse for providing another enjoyable stop on this day's significant Jax Brew Bitch Prowl.

Engine 15's own Old Battle Ax IPA & Rye of the Tiger IPA
The Beast was naturally headed westward, so I was able to quickly consider and choose Engine 15 Brewing Company (1500 Beach Boulevard – Jax Beach – 904.249.2337) since we had not visited there in past few weeks and I knew they have some righteous grub!

The crowd was notable but there were still some seats available, so companion selected a table by the front entrance while I placed our following beer order with Mall, one of my favorite beer-temptresses there at Engine 15: Also serving behind the bar was Caleb, a dedicated and friendly member of the Engine 15 team.

Engine 15 brewing Company Rye of the Tiger IPA – (description per brewerydb.com)
“This amber colored rye beer combines the citrus and floral character of a classic American IPA with the spicy earthy notes of a Rye ale. Hoppy but not too bitter and just enough spice to give you a little “how’s your father?”

Old Battle Axe IPA – (description per brewerydb.com)
“The Summit hops lend a pronounced pineapple and citrus character to this American IPA, late additions of Northern Brewer, Glacier and more Summit round out the hop profile in this delicious nectar.”

Engine 15's Pigs in Blankets $6
A friend had mentioned how good Engine 15's “Pigs in Blankets” (only $6) were, so we ordered a plate of those, Served with a special sauce, these hot little piglets fit perfectly with the beer we were enjoying!

Still a little hungry, we then ordered Engine 15's popular and value-priced appetizer, the Chips and Queso Blanco (only $5) – a healthy helping of fresh salty chips and a bowl of warm white cheese queso. Surprisingly, I was a little disappointed in this selection. Some of the chips seemed to be the “bottom of the bag” and the queso had a aftertaste of it having been frozen and then heated up.

Engine 15's Chips & Queso Blanco $5
I was able to speak with co-owner Luch and congratulated him and his lovely wife Kara on the birth of their daughter.  Luch makes each of our visits so pleasant – his hands-on approach to management and engaging personality have helped build the solid top-rated reputation now enjoyed by Engine 15 Brewing Company,

We still had a significant drive home to make, so we bid farewell to Mall and Caleb and were soon continuing our voyage home on Beach Boulevard.

My sincere appreciation to Mall and Caleb for their friendly customer service; to Luch for taking the time to speak with me and to him and the rest of the staff at Engine 15 for maintaining everything they do in making Engine 15 Brewing Company a consistent top-quality stop on many Jax Brew Bitch Prowls.

I was thinking the evening was done and I thought it would be best to get companion home since he had lost some sleep the night before but as we approached the corner of Beach Boulevard and St. Johns Bluff Road South, companion and I looked at each other with knowing smiles. Yes, we were somewhat full – but forget Jello! … there's always room for late-night sushi!

We pulled into the Winn-Dixie Shopping Center located at the southwest corner of that intersection for Matsuya Sushi and Grill and parked right in front of the restaurant, not too surprising since it was 9:30 pm.

Entering, we saw owner Jackie Chen, his lovely wife and new baby daughter inside along with the sushi chef and a very pleasant waitress. We were alone inside Matsuya but felt very comfortable as we could tell the entire staff appreciates each and every customer. As I have noted before in earlier posts, ownership at Matsuya are very willing to serve you – even if you arrive a few minutes before the posted closing time.

I quickly grabbed the sushi menu and made the following selections:

Dynamite Roll ($6.20) – Fresh salmon, krab meat & asparagus – deep fried with mayo, hot sauce and eel sauce on top.

Philadelphia Roll ($4.00) – Cream cheese and krab meat

Spicy Tuna ($5.20) – self explanatory

Crunch Spicy Salmon ($5.20) – self- explanatory – MY FAV! - I even ordered one of these to go!

We always prefer “water & lime” with our sushi – unless I am suffering from ESD (Extreme Sake Deficiency). Oh, by the way, that reminds me! … check with Matsuya about their all-you-can drink Sake special! …

Also, by reserving a spot and pre-paying, you can attend the regularly scheduled “Make-Your-Own-Sushi” class where for $29 per head ($10 more if you want the all-you-drink-sake combined with the class) you can learn how to make sushi and eat all you make! ,.,, I am SO going to do this – the class is typically held on certain Sundays, so check with Matsuya about their next available class!

My sincere appreciation to Jackie and his wife, the sushi chef and waitress for their spectacular service and food – and for providing the perfect experience to end this extended and very memorable Jax Brew Bitch Prowl.

Matsuya Sushi and Grill

The remaining portion of the drive home seemed to go quickly, as I reflected upon the day's events. I am blessed with a supportive companion, great beer-centric friends and those of you who take the time out of your day to read and follow my Prowls. You are each such a treasure to me – you truly make being the Jax Brew Bitch “wonderful” – or as they say in the three native languages of Belgium -  prachtig ...merveilleux …wunderbar.

Thank you all!

Getting amped up for Beer Festivities and sampling brews

*le sigh - better luck next time!

Great news came my way on Thursday (April 26) from Scott Russell of North Florida Sales! … He was offering me two tickets to the Folio Weekly Beer & Music Fest at the Moroccan Shrine! …. WooHoo! …

Since Scott was out of town dealing with the loss of a family member, I would have understood if he had not been able to make this happen. But even being out of town, Scott called me and asked if I would mind going by his office to pick them up (and two for Springfield Brew Crew’s, Marc Wisdom). I was honored that he took the time to make sure we all received the tickets during a difficult time for Scott.

We needed to get to North Florida Sales by 5:00 pm, so we had to get an early start. Thanks to “Maggie” our trusty and dependable GPS, we had little trouble finding the place. As we drove into their parking lot, I noticed they had a statue of a Budweiser Clydesdale horse on a pedestal in a landscaped island in the middle – the PERFECT photo op for the Jax Brew Bitch!

After obtaining the tickets at the front desk – and, of course, posing under the Clydesdale, I had a “scathingly brilliant idea”! … we should go enjoy a beer somewhere by the beaches since we were already over halfway there. The only trouble THIS angel was having was deciding exactly where would be the BBB (best brew bar) to visit. So many were the choices!

I knew Green Room Brewing had two things I wanted to try – The Void Black IPA and the ZIPA Zythos IPA … but I also realized that it was Happy Hour at Brix … Ah, decisions are indeed the hinges of destiny (nod to Pythagoras) …  companion had an enlightened suggestion which solved my dilemma– why not do both?

So, Green Room Brewing (228 3rd Street North – Jax Beach – 904.201.9283) became our first stop of the evening. As we entered, we noticed Christina and Jason, the Tap Room Manager behind the bar - I am always glad to see these two! … They both make our visits to Green Room Brewing very enjoyable. I always learn something new about the beaches area – and beer – during my discussions with them. They are delightful in their service to Green Room customers and quite agile and effective on busy nights!

Although there was an impressive selection of beer available, I had my “beer glands” set for The Void Black IPA and the ZIPA Zythos IPA.

Void Black IPA & the ZIPA, Zythos IPA
The smaller crowd gathered was due to it being late afternoon / early evening, so we soon had our beers in hand. While enjoying both of these tasty beverages, owner Eric Luman made his appearance and I was pleased he was gracious enough to come over and say hello, He explained that The Void Black IPA had everything in a stout but the coffee influence – and a healthy addition of hops! … the “jolt” I crave in an IPA is certainly there!

The Zythos IPA (ZIPA) is made with a certain company's proprietary hop blend. This premium pellet blend adds citrus, pine, floral, grapefruit and tangerine notes to this IPA. My taste buds experienced what I felt was a delicious grapefruit and floral mix.

The Matamata by Cigar City
and Swamp Head Brewery
Eric went on to inform us Green Room had just tapped a collaboration between Green Room Brewing, Cigar City Brewing and Swamp Head Brewery, named Matamata, a new Zealand bitter clocking in at 4.8% ABV. We were provided a sample and it was nice on the palate – and not too “in your face” at 4.8% ABV.

Wishing to take advantage of the aforementioned Happy Hour, we bid farewell to Christina and Jason, quite satisfied with the beer selections we made that day.

Thanks to Christina, Jason and Eric for their consistently excellent service and for making us feel welcome every time we come in! … also, my appreciation for maintaining the comfortable atmosphere and quality brews which made this visit to Green Room Brewing an enjoyable Jax Brew Bitch experience!

Although Brix Taphouse (300 2nd Street North – Jax Beach – 904.241.4668) is situated directly across 3rd Street from Green Room Brewing, a median prevented companion from driving straight across. (Silly companion – that would never stop me!) … he drove us south to a median opening and triangulated us into a parking spot near the front door of Brix … isn't that akin to another Pythagorean principle? – something to do with geometry? … like the sum of the squares of the sides? … (yes, I wanted to say “thingy”) … well, all I knew I was going to take my BACK-side and sit it squarely into one of the comfy stools at the impressive bar inside Brix Taphouse!

Grady working hard at Brix
Grady and Gina were behind the bar and I must say, these two made this visit spectacular. Grady works the day shift as the friendly and effective Manager of Brix Taphouse and has leeway to select half of the impressive array of beer available on tap. Gina was a sincerely warm and gracious bartender quite handy at slinging brews and the multitude of liquor selections housed behind the bar.

Grady took the time to describe several of the available drafts, each one with tantalizing detail. Grady knows his stuff – and how to treat his customers!

We selected and shared the following tasty brews (descriptions per breweries' websites):

Lagunitas Brewing Company's Cappuccino Stout

“Big, Dark and Scary Imperial-esque Stout Brewed With Plenty of Dark Malts and Roast Barley And Loads of Sebastopol’s Hardcore Coffee for Deep Roasty Flavors and that Extra Krunk.

Note: 9.2% ABV”

JBB Notes: Yes sir, that's my baby! … Cappuccino and Stout? … are you kidding? … an instant JBB fave!

Huyghe Brewery's Delerium Tremens

“Alcohol volume: 8.5% ABV
Colour and sight: pale blond, the fine and regular effervesce ensures a fine and stable head.
Scent: Slightly malty, a nice touch of alcohol, spicy.
Flavour: Feels like the sound shot of alcohol is igniting the mouth. In reality the tongue and palate are warmed. The taste is characterized by its roundness. The aftertaste is strong, long-lasting and dry bitter.”

JBB Notes: This one will come up from behind and surprise you! … a little “tingly in the mouth” … if you like this type of brew, you can't go wrong getting DTs.

Swamp Head Brewery's Stumpknocker Pale Ale

“Stump Knocker Pale Ale got its name from the notoriously feisty Stumpknocker fish that will at times make you think you have hooked into the lunker. True to form, this refreshing Pale Ale remains very smooth and drinkable while maintaining the same hop headed attitude as the biggest boy in the pond.
Stump Knocker features late flavor aroma hops, augmented with two dry hop additions to enhance the aromatics. These techniques produce a hop-centered ale with a crisp, balanced finish that will recharge your palate!”
JBB Notes: Solid Pale Ale participant – good summer beer – slight hop essence.

We also sampled:

Boulder Beer Company's Mojo Risin' Double IPA

“Mojo Risin' Double IPA is a souped up extreme version of Mojo IPA. Brewed with more than a half-ton extra malt and twice the amount of hops – then double-dry-hopped with Amarillo hops for added intensity,

Note: 10% ABV, Amarillo and Centennial hops”

JBB Notes: WOW! … good hop jolt I love – full bodied – a definite future buy for JBB

Cigar City Brewing's Hotter Than Helles Lager

“Our Munich Lager is a nod to the thirst quenching lagers of Germany. Our Helles has a sweet malt expression that is balanced by floral bitterness from the use of German Hallertaur Mittelfruh hops. A very refreshing beer that will also entice you by its subtle complexity and drinkability. Note: 5% ABV”

JBB Notes: I'm not a big fan of lagers but I could tell this one had exceptional flavor – a major step up from your normal lager.

While enjoying our brews, companion excused himself and promptly returned with a look of concern on his face. He suggested I venture over near the restrooms (very clean and well-supplied, by the way) and look at the poster announcing Cinco de Larry-O, an event sponsored by Brix Taphouse to benefit an ill brother of the owners. As I was reading the poster (and trying to hold back some tears), owner Nanci approached and offered more detail about the upcoming event. In our first conversation, I could tell Nanci is a genuine individual with a heart as big as her bar. She is the type of owner that makes me motivated to frequent her establishment more often.

What a great experience! … Gina, Grady and Nancy are simply top-notch … the absolute best and I was bewildered when I checked my watch. GAD! … look at the time!

Lagunita's Cappuccino Stout
and the Delerium Tremens
Time is the soul of this world - I do believe clocks are sensitive to the mood of a room and are in constant battle with mortals, wishing to inflict sadness and boredom as often as possible into their nemeses' lives. If you are waiting for something (boiling of an egg, graduation, the next tapped beer at your favorite brewery), the markers of time slow down to make it even more aggravating and boring. If you are doing something fun (eating a fine meal, graduation day, enjoying the most recently tapped beer), the clocks speed up, minimizing your enjoyment and thus bringing on a period of sadness. (I'll call this my BrewBitchagorean Theory). Sadly, the clocks had conspired to make us call an end to the evening's fun activities. Mustering all of our strength to leave Brix Taphouse, we said goodbye to Grady, Gina and Nanci and thanked them for their superior service.

Settling in the Jeep and preparing myself for a snooze during the long traverse home, I asked companion if Pythagoras was the man who said he had a “golden thigh”. Although he is quite adept at the geometric calculations, companion obviously has no knowledge about the man himself – my clue being how he was looking at me like I had Samian lizards crawling all over my face. I informed him that I had heard the philosopher had indeed made that assertion, odd though it sounds in my ignorance of its meaning or background. As I snuggled into my seat for my nap, I made a mental note to do some more research in the future about this fascinating man Pythagoras – I CERTAINLY want some of what HE was drinkin'.

My heartfelt appreciation to Grady, Gina and Nanci for providing the venue and amazing selection of fine brews making Brix Taphouse the perfect setting in which to end this Jax Brew Bitch Prowl!

Deja Vu at the Green Room, Beer Zombies and hittin' Dick's and Brix

“This is like deja vu all over again” … that quote from Yogi Berra certainly applied on Saturday (April 7) as we readied ourselves for the day's brew-related activities – once more to be centered around Jacksonville Beach. The Rare Bottle Tasting event at the Green Room Brewing Company (228 3rd Street North – Jax Beach – 904.201.9283) was our initial destination – but I knew I would probably be motivated to venture into other establishments while we were over by the beaches. I am SO dedicated.

Beer Zombies
Given the fact the event was to begin at noon and realizing “it gets late early out there”, we had set the alarm to give us enough time to get ready. Companion did yeoman's work loading the Jeep with the cooler of bottled beer we would be sharing with those attending and all the other bags of snacks and accessories needed for an extended Jax Brew Bitch Prowl.

... and so it begins
The evening before, we had prepared “Armadillo Queso” - a recipe from companion's father – which really does not have any of the leathery-shelled creature involved – just a name given to it in jest. In a crock pot and kept hot for a couple of hours the night before, the flavor of the ingredients come out strongly when re-heated just prior to serving. The still-warm crock pot was thus another item companion needed to pack away somewhere within the confines of the Jeep.

By the time we arrived, the tables had been joined to provide a large plateau for arranging snacks, bottles and glasses. Companion quickly set up the Crock Pot of queso on a nearby end table while I acquired two of Green Room's brews.

We noticed that those attending this event who had also been at Green Room the evening before for the Florida Tap Takeover were in much the same shape as the Jax Brew Bitch and companion – that is, a little disoriented – Beer Zombies, as it were -  filing in the front door, wondering, mumbling, “Weren't we just here a few hours ago?” - the answer being “Yes”.

JBB & Scott
Scott Russell and Gentry from North Florida Sales made their appearance, welcoming several in the group, including myself. They had their “game face on” and needed to tend to some business, so they excused themselves with promises of returning.

Owner Eric Luman joined the group and shared some rather unique and tasty beers. I was fortunate enough to be able to speak with him for a little while about Green Room, this event and the previous evening's Tap Takeover,. He had another event to attend for Jax Beer Week, so he too left our “Bonfire of the Breweries” being presented table top at his establishment.

Gentry & Eric
Sharing commenced and soon the effects from the previous evening's extravaganza were overcome by the enjoyment of the numerous and varied brews being shared by the group. These included:

Karl Strauss Brewing Company 23rd Anniversary Old Ale (http://www.karlstrauss.com/)

Crooked Stave Surette Wood Aged Farmhouse Ale (http://www.crookedstave.com/)

Three Floyds Brewing Company Dreadnaught (http://www.3floyds.com/)

Odell Brewing Company Woodcut No. 1 – Oak Aged Ale (http://odellbrewing.com)

SweetWater Brewing Company Dank Tank Mean Joe Bean (http://sweetwaterbrew.com)

There were several others but it is difficult to remember them all.

Jason & Molly were handling the activities at the bar – and keeping a watchful eye on all of us! … they were so friendly and helped make the event a wonderful experience.

An amazing volume of beer was consumed by the large group attending the event and each bottle opened and shared received rave reviews by all the beer enthusiasts gathered, each graciously sharing a favored brew – or wanting the group to join them in trying a new one.

To view more photos from the Rare Bottle Tasting, visit the link below:

Looking at my watch, I noted the appointed time for the end of the Rare Bottle Sharing event approached and I was really hungry for something other than queso to eat. Scott Russell and Gentry of North Florida Sales had indeed returned and stated matter-of-factly that he and Gentry were headed over to Dick's Wings (3311 3rd Street North – Jax Beach – 904.853.5004) – right across the street from the Green Room ... Marvelous idea, Scott! …

Scott and Gentry were walking over from the Green Room, but no, no, no - I was having none of that walking business. Companion already knew my preference and was happy to oblige me - and soon we were parked about the same distance away from Dick's Wings – but at least we were safely across the busy 3rd Street.

Entering, we noticed Scott and Gentry were now part of a trio having had a third individual join them and Scott was gracious enough to introduce me to Preben Olsen of Grassroots Natural Market - who is also one of the owners of the hopefully-soon-to-open Aardwolf Brewery (see link to Metro Jacksonville's interview of Preben and business partner Michael below).

Preben was kind enough to indulge me in asking him a few questions about his background,  their plans for the brewery and their beer. I can't wait! … Preben is a fascinating individual and such a gentleman.

Since food was a main objective, we ordered (descriptions per their website):

Cajun Wings with Ranch Sauce
Cajun Ranch Burger ($7.99) - Our traditional burger w/ Cajun and ranch dressing”

5 wings - with Cajun Ranch sauce ($6.99)

Companion and I split a pint of Dukes Cold Nose Brown Ale ($4.99) to go with the meal, noted on Bold City's website: “This is a mild brown ale which is easily drinkable. A slight nuttiness and sweetness are present. ”.

We ended up sharing the burger and wings – good food – friendly staff – clean restrooms … I was happy with my first experience at Dick's Wings at Jax Beach!

Hunger mitigated, Scott suggested we visit Brix Taphouse (300 2nd Street – Jax Beach – 904.241.4668), just a short walk down from Dick's Wings.

We had never visited Brix before, so I was hoping to not be disappointed. I wasn't! … the upscale décor and appropriate lighting made this establishment quite inviting. Of course, the massive bar didn't hurt, either. With seating enough for a small country, Brix offers a wonderful place for groups – both small and large.

Bar-temptress Charlotte
Our beautiful and efficient bar-temptress for the afternoon was Charlotte, who was engaging, effective and quite knowledgeable about the beer!. Co-manning the beverage duties was Grady. Both he and Charlotte were hustling from one side of the bar to the other, tending to the needs and desires of our fellow-patrons.

I was taken aback when I learned from Charlotte that their 32 available drafts were only $3.00 each during Happy Hour which runs until 8:00 pm every day … $3.00 ??? … every day? … I'm movin' to the Beach! … Companion! ... grab the critters - leave the rest!

Excited about this discovery, we ordered (descriptions per breweries' websites):

Terrapin Beer's Hopsecutioner IPA

This Killer IPA  earns its name by using six different types of hops while still remaining an aggressive well balanced beer.

ABV: 7.3%
IBU’s: 78
O.G.: 16.3
FG: 3.0
Malt: 2 Row Pale Malt,Munich, Pale Crystal 24L, Victory
Hops: Warrior, Chinook, Centennial, Simcoe, Amarillo, Cascade (dry hop)
Awards: Gold Medal- 2010 Atlantic City Beer Festival (India Pale Ale)
and,

Left Hand Brewing Company's Nitro Milk Stout

Style : Sweet Stout
Color : Black
Body : Full
ABV : 6.00%
IBU's : 25

Both were superb, of course. The Hopsecutioner has the jolt I love and the Nitro Milk Stout was almost like dessert.

I know many have ventured into Brix Taphouse but this was a new and exciting “find” for the Jax Brew Bitch! … I'm going back very soon!

Great spot for a great deal - if you haven't tried Brix Taphouse, you are certainly missing out!

Thanks to Charlotte and the owners of Brix Taphouse for providing a new and very unique and habit-forming regular stop during my Jax Brew Bitch Prowls!

Companion had done an admirable job of squiring me around that week and I wanted to do something special for him, Knowing he loves cigars, I suggested we all head over to Island Girl Cigar Bar (108 1st Street – Neptune Beach – 904.372.0943).

Once we were inside, I heard something behind me and coming through the front door was none other than Ed Stansel. He was dining with this family next door at Tama's Sushi Japanese and since they were seated at the window, noticed us walking along the sidewalk. We followed him back to Tama's and saw his beautiful and ever-so-intelligent wife Beth and a strapping young handsome man - one of their sons. What a remarkable family! … they were about done with their meal and decorum was the only thing which kept me from grabbing what was left on their plates …. tempting though, since I've been really wanting to try the sushi at Tama's - but hunger had not yet re-materialized. After some discussion, we bid the Stansel’s farewell and once again entered Island Girl.

Comfy seating at
Island Girl Cigar Bar
Scott and Preben were at the bar and we found two seats next to them. Companion learned of their special that evening pairing a certain Maduro cigar with a specific beer. He went with the special and we shared it.

Scott had to leave but we were able to sit with Preben and talk more of his plans for the future. What a fun time! … we have been to the Island Girl on Gate Parkway, but I think I prefer this Neptune Beach location – more cozy!

All too soon, it was time to leave Island Girl and say goodbye to Preben. We look forward to seeing him again in the near future!

I'll be back to Island Girl very soon on another Prowl – the upscale décor, friendly staff, clean restrooms and subtle lighting combined to make this establishment a new regular haunt of mine on future Jax Brew Bitch Prowls!

Thanks to Island Girl for providing another unique brew-related venue!

The mix of the aroma of fine cigars and the taste of fine brews had combined to stimulate my hunger once again. Upon entering the Jeep, I noticed the freakin' Fried Fairy had appeared, crouched in front of me on the dashboard. The Fried Fairy directed us over to Colonel Mustard's Phat Burger (1722 North Third Street – Jax Beach – 904.247.5747) and I was certainly not going to protest.

We had noticed this establishment before on previous Prowls, but had never stopped in. I doubted it was still open but was pleased to see it was! … As we entered, I noticed it was just 10 minutes prior to them closing, so we asked the staff there if it was too late to order some food.

I was very impressed that not only did they not mind cooking us up a couple of Phat Burgers, they were also pleasant and made us feel like they appreciated us coming in! … the “phabulous” staff explained all about their eatery and made suggestions to us for our next visit.  The owners of Col. Mustard's are certainly blessed with some great folks doing their best for them – and their customers!

The Phat Burger with Homefries
The burgers were phenomenal! … the “beef-o-sauras rexes” they modestly refer to as  “Phat Burgers” served up to both me and companion were truly awe-inspiring creations. 98% Burger and 2% Bun – just like their website says. A true value for your money.

Throughout our meal, the staff was engaged in our conversations and we felt neither rushed or a burden. Upon leaving (with half of my Phat Burger in a to-go box), they wished us well and hoped for our return in the near future.

Regrettably, it was time to pronounce the end of this evening's activities. Companion opened my door and made sure I was securely buckled in. I looked up to see the Fried Fairy once again crouched on the dash, smiling at me … I asked, “Little one, how did you know I needed a Col. Mustard's Phat Burger?”

Disappearing, that crispy little creature laughed and slyly responded … “As Yogi said - you can observe a lot - just by watchin' ...”

A most enthusiastic and sincere “Thank You!” and “Well Done!” to the crew at Col. Mustard's for being so kind – for serving up fantastic food – and for providing an enjoyable end to this Jax Brew Bitch Prowl!
