Storm Troopers, Tootsie Rolls & Waffle Burgers - Strange brew indeed!

Downtown was our destination on the evening of Wednesday,  April 4 for the SweetWater Brewing Company tasting being held at Northstar Substation (119 E. Bay Street – 904.860.5451).

Parking can be a challenge downtown, but we found a spot not far from the front door. On the sidewalk in front of Northstar was a unit of elite soldiers, those intimidating members of the Galactic Imperial Navy – the Imperial Stormtroopers! … WooHoo! … this group of impressively uniformed New World enforcers is known as the Sandtroopers of the 501st Legion – Florida Garrison (see link below). They were marching around downtown Jacksonville to gain attention and donations for the Wolfson Children's Hospital during the well-attended Art Walk event being held that evening.

Graciously agreeing to my request for photos, I was informed by Patrick Thomas, apparent leader of this group, that his daughter was inside Northstar Substation selling Baby Cake Pops for the same charity!

As I entered Northstar, obviously arriving a little early for the tasting, the girls selling the Baby Cake Pops were stationed at the close end of the bar. We purchased two of the tasty treats and they were incredible! … a small cake-on-a-stick dipped in chocolate … unique and delicious, decadent yummers!  … well done, girls!

Andrea, Stu, the JBB and Kris
Stuart Brown from SweetWater was managing the tasting event for the brewery and I learned quite a bit about him, the brews du jour and the SweetWater brewery itself.

Offered up that night from SweetWater (descriptions per their website):

SweetWater 420 Extra Pale Ale – I also refer to this brew as “Bong Water” - not sure why – but I first tried it in pre-Jax Brew Bitch days at a Mellow Mushroom in Albany, Georgia. I still remember how “clean” it tasted – and at that time, I was not remotely interested in beer – having been exposed only to the tasteless (now, at least to me) mass produced liquid. Now, although I have a taste for ales, porters and stouts, the Bong … I mean SweetWater 420 is still one of my favs.

“SweetWater 420 Extra Pale Ale, our most popular brew, is a tasty West Coast Style Pale Ale with a stimulating hop character and a crisp finish. 1st brewed on April 20th 1997. Note – 5.4% ABV”

SweetWater Blue – this was the first time I had tried this beer – definitely noticed the blueberry influence.

“Always the funky favorite at any outdoor beer festival, SweetWater Blue is a unique light-bodied ale with a hint of fresh blueberries. It begins with an appealing blueberry aroma and finishes as a surprisingly thirst-quenching ale. Note – 4.9% ABV”

SweetWater Road Trip – enough hop spike to distinguish itself from other Pilsners!
“Bikini Season – a fiery Pilsner fermented at ale temperatures for a fuller flavor, capped by and intense spicy-hop finish. Nobody Rides for Free. Note – 5.2% ABV

SweetWater Happy Ending Imperial Stout – as companion says, “Hello, Betty!” - wow, an amazing full-bodied stout – smooth and sweet. This will become one of my addictions!

“This seasonal “Catch and Release” Imperial Stout is a dry hopped stiffy, leading to an explosive finish at 9% ABV that is guaranteed to put a smile on your face.

I had ordered a Flight of these four and since Northstar's Flights include five selections, owner Kris suggested I add the Bell 's Brewery Two Hearted Ale described on Bell's website:

“Two Hearted Ale is defined by its intense hop aroma and malt balance. Hopped exclusively with the Centennial hop varietal from the Pacific Northwest, massive additions in the kettle and again in the fermenter lend their characteristic grapefruit and pine resin aromas. A significant malt body balances this hop presence; together with the signature fruity aromas of Bell's house yeast, this leads to a remarkably drinkable American-style India Pale Ale.” - 7.0% ABV

Well-balanced with a healthy hop jolt and smooth citrusy taste, I really like this popular ale.

Although an impressive menu exists at Northstar, we had previously eaten dinner at home, so hunger had not yet materialized. During a previous visit, not related to Jax Brew Bitch, we had some of their pizza which was simply constructed and delicious.

Stu further enlightened me by telling me about the upcoming SweetWater 420 Fest (Apr 20-22) in Atlanta! … great music, great beers, food (with VIP passes) – what else do you need? … we have friends who live in the area, so that would make for cheap accommodations!

Kris serving up 3 Olive Loopy Vodka
Northstar owners Kris and Andrea were kind enough to also offer a quick sample of Three Olives Loopy Vodka – which tasted just like the Froot Loops cereal – well, almost – if Froot Loops had tasted (and kicked) like Loopy, breakfast would have been my “favoritest” meal in my youth!

If planning a visit to Northstar, you can possibly find parking in the few spots on Bay Street in front of the building they are in – by arriving early or being lucky. Failing that, there are other parking lots and spaces sprinkled about downtown (some free – some pay spots), not too far away.

Samplin'
On Fridays, the Improv group Mad Cowford appears there at Northstar. By the way, Mad Cowford will be appearing in Comedy for Critters at the Hotel Indigo at Tapestry Park on April 28. Please visit their website below to learn more about the group and the event!

Thanks to Stuart Brown of SweetWater, Andrea and Kris of Northstar for providing another memorable Jax Brew Bitch experience!

Gentry, The JBB & Scott
Amazed how the time had flown by inside Northstar, I realized it was going to be a challenge making it to Engine 15 Brewing Company (1500 Beach Boulevard – Jax Beach – 904.249.BEER) in time for the special craft brew and food pairing - Oak-Aged Simcoe Imperial IPA paired with steam burger sliders and coconut rice for $10. (this price included the brew!)

Wishing for a Inter-Galactic Quantum Teleporter the whole way over to Engine 15, we finally arrived only to learn that all sliders and Oak-Aged Simcoe Imperial IPA had already been consumed. Groans ensued. Companion dripped tears.

The bearer of the bad news was none other than Scott Russell of North Florida Sales! … after confirming I would not shoot the messenger, Scott introduced me to Gentry, for whom Scott said he works. Consoling us for missing out, we had a long discussion with them about the beer community in Jacksonville and their plans for the future.

The Tootsie Roll &
Lost Coast Brewery's
While speaking with Scott, he asked if I had tried a “Tootsie Roll” - a 50/50 mix of Kasteel Rouge and Southern Tier Brewing Company's Choklat Imperial Stout! … no, I said and he quickly produced one for me. Let me just say Scott was my hero for the night! … this amazing concoction will please all those who have an affinity for chocolate and impress those who regularly enjoy the Kasteel Rouge.

Southern Tier describes their Choklat:

“The Popol Vuh, the sacred book of the Maya, unfolds a complex web of mystery around a beverage known as xocoatl (ch-co-atle). At Southern Tier, we’re not surprised that hieroglyphs of the ancient Maya depict chocolate being poured for rulers and gods. Even through the many voyages of Columbus, the mystical bean remained nothing more than a strange currency of the native peoples

Moving through centuries, the circular journey of cacao has been realized in our brew house, encompassing the complexity of the darkest, bittersweet candy together with the original frothy cold beverage of the ancient Maya to bring to you our Blackwater Series Choklat Stout. We have combined the finest ingredients to tempt your senses and renew the power and interrelation of history in every bottle.

FOOD PAIRINGS: Particularly tasty with mint truffles, mascarpone cheese (canoli), angelfood cake. Enjoy alone, or as a float with a scoop of organic vanilla bean ice cream. Note: 10.0% ABV”

As noted in earlier posts, the Kasteel Rouge is described:

“Castle Red is the fruit beer of the Castle range. Its unique dark red colour is obtained by mixing Castle brown that has been left to mature for at least 6 months with sour cherries. This beer has gastronomic qualities and can be drunk as an aperitif, with a BBQ, to accompany a dessert or simply as an outstanding real ale.“

Companion had selected Lost Coast Brewery's Downtown Brown Light Brown Ale, described on their website:

“A smooth, full-bodied nut brown ale, lightly hopped with a hint of roasted and crystal malts. This ale is dark in color without the heavy taste of porter or stout. - Note: 5.0% ABV” - I took a few sips and it was mild but tasty – another good choice for a quick grab out of the fridge.

Thanks to Scott and Gentry from North Florida Sales for assuaging our disappointment in missing the special pairing and to Engine 15 for continuing to deliver the types of events Jacksonvillians enjoy!

We were NOT going to end this Prowl on a missed event, so companion suggested we head on over to Green Room Brewing (228 3rd Street North – Jax Beach – 904.201.9283).

Scott and Gentry joined us there and soon companion and I were enjoying two of Green Room's finely crafted beers:

Christina serving up Undertow
Orange Blossom Barleywine &
The Contraption
The Contraption Double IPA – a joint creation by Intuition Ale Works and Mellow Mushroom described on Intuition's website:

“A bold and hearty collaboration brew crafted with our fellow hopheads at Mellow Mushroom.” - Delicious and hoppy!

Undertow Orange Blossom Barleywine – malty with unmistakable citrus influence – 9.5% ABV

Jason, the JBB & Scott
Green Room is so comfortable – I wished we lived closer. Jason and Christina were engaged, personable and ever so efficient! … I didn't want to leave but it was late and I assume Jason and Christina DO have to go home to their respective spouses and live outside the brewery sometime … right? … well, you'd think they'd have to … right? … honestly, if I worked there, companion would possibly have to drag me out of there ...

Thanks to Jason and Christina at the Green Room for being the perfect hosts and to Scott and Gentry from North Florida Sales for being such great companions during this “fly-by-the-seat-of-our-pants” Jax Brew Bitch evening!

Hunger was now front and center on my control screen and I needed something to particle-beam-blast it to pieces. The late hour dictated most probably a chain establishment. What's that yellow sign up ahead? … a Waffle House! (334 Beach Blvd – Jax Beach).

Although I have found some Waffle House locations to have rather surly staff, this one was definitely not in this category. The staff was very pleasant, efficient and professional.

The Waffle Burger
Companion ordered their All Star Special which includes a waffle he never eats – he gets that for me! … I wasn't in the mood for breakfast (yet), so I chose an Angus burger. Once the food arrived, companion's meal became very “interesting” to me. He yielded one of his two sausage patties and a bite (or two) of his hash browns.

I was only about half finished with the burger when he pushed his plate away, the sole remaining portion being that warm, thick waffle on its own plate. Knowing it always has my name on it, I pulled it closer and poured some syrup over it – and then – AHAH! … an inspiration! … a Waffle-Burger! … I wrapped that Angus burger with the waffle  - and continued to eat.

This enlightened moment MUST have been wrought by my innate sense of good food pairings ….. well, okay … MAYBE it was conceived by the amount of fine brews I had sampled throughout the evening – you be the judge … regardless of your leaning though, it was delicious!

I couldn't finish it – as companion says, I was “full as a tick”, but I never waste food. The courteous staff at Waffle House provided a to-go box for the leftovers. As I made my way outside, I sadly realized that this was indeed the end of an eventful Jax Brew Bitch Prowl.

Positioning myself in the Jeep and making sure I was securely buckled, I settled in for the drive back home. I knew that due to the steady hum and vibration of the Jeep, I would soon fall asleep. Hey! -  I had done a very respectable Jax-Brew-Bitch-job of sampling brews and chews during the evening!

I took a quick, sleepy, admiring glance over at companion as he dutifully steered the vehicle westward and I realized the next three days would present a significant number of beer-related activities for us. With his work schedule and the wide geographic area we would be crisscrossing, I hoped he was up to the significant tasks which lay ahead.

Closing my eyes for the hyper-sleep period of the return voyage, I softly whispered to him, “... May The Force be with you, Obi-Wan Companion, may The Force be with you ...”

Girls Pint Out at Cork & Keg

Women-only Beer Tasting? … take THAT testosterone-laden sports bars and chauvinistic man-caves! … I was excited to hear about such an event to be held at Cork and Keg (108 Bartram Oaks Walk – Suite 105 – Fruit Cove – 904.287.4310) on Tuesday (April 3). Carol Lowrey Graham from Brown Distributing was managing the event beginning at 7:00 pm and I wanted to be on time. It was time to show the “world of suits” that females have a definite spot at the brew table!

Feeling ever-so Simone de Beauvoir,  I batted my eyes at companion and he kindly agreed to being my … uh … hmmm … DRIVER!  (yes, that's the word I was looking for) for the evening. As part of the deal, he said he would much prefer to sequester himself at the nearby Shannon's Irish Pub, located in the same upscale shopping center. Being equal partners, I agreed to this stipulation.

Our hostess, Amanda
Arriving a bit early, we drove around the development and was impressed with the design used for the site layout and architecture. Sadly, the economy has taken its toll on a number of businesses formerly based there, but maintenance is obviously superb and it appears lease management is located right on-site.

In pre-Jax Brew Bitch days, we had driven through this shopping center and noticed Cork and Keg and judging-that-book-by-its-cover, assumed it was a snooty, over-priced heavily wine-centered establishment. Boy howdy, how wrong we were!

Now, as background, let me say the Jax Brew Bitch does like herself some wine – red, mainly – so, I harbor no ill  will about wine merchants whatsoever – but, you know – some become a little pretentious, brusquely ringing you (the peasant) up with a smug, stifled chortle at your feeble selection of a $21.99 bottle of wine. Wine has its place – which I believe is slipping a little due to the explosion of the craft beer industry.

There's certainly not near the same excitement around the office water cooler - “Joe, did your hear about the new Merlot from Cali?”  - nope, more probably, “Joe, did you hear Bold City/Brewer’s Pizza/Engine 15/Green Room/Intuition/Kickbacks/Mile Marker tapped a new IPA? - it's awesome!”

So, back to the beer-suffrage movement at Cork and Keg – hey, we women can have a say in this industry! .... As I said, we were so wrong in our initial “drive-by” perception of this place.

Companion parked us near the front door and skedaddled over to Shannon's. I entered Cork and Keg and was instantly impressed. Beautiful décor and subtle lighting combine to create the warm, comfortable ambiance of the place. Yes, there is a good selection of notable wines but my field of vision was overtaken by the wall sections filled with beer!

Girls Pint Out
Still being a little early, I was surprised to find the bar was full, shoulder-to-shoulder with women obviously already enjoying the event. I found two spots at the far end of the bar (one being reserved for someone), so I bellied up on the last remaining stool. The empty one next to me was soon occupied by Kelle, who also works at Cork & Keg. She was “off-duty” that evening and I soon was carrying on a conversation with her about Cork and Keg, her work there – and beer! … this gal knows her brews!

Amanda, the experienced and gracious bartender, approached and introduced herself. Sweet, beautiful and friendly, she was the perfect hostess for the evening. Of course, I had already noticed Carol was directing traffic, beer-wise, and I had already given this fellow-Cajun-gal a big southern-Louisiana hug.

Carol is phenomenal! … dedicated and knowledgeable, she is the best. Here are the brews of which she shared and educated us that evening (descriptions from breweries):

Cigar City's
Tropical Heat Wave
Cigar City Brewing Tropical Heatwave
American Wheat Ale, hazy light gold in color. The use of New Zealand hop varietal, Kohatu, creates a pleasant passion fruit expression in the aroma. The flavor opens with a clean floral bitterness and then has a tropical fruit bitterness that resembles passion fruit with underlying hints of pine. Overall, a refreshing, sessionable wheat ale with a wave of hop flavor to beat the Summer heat. Made for WBMF 88.5 FM – a listener-supported community radio that celebrates cultural diversity and is committed to equality, peace and economic justice. It has been serving Tampa since 1979 and is celebrating the 31st Anniversary of the WMNF Tropical Heatwave – 5% ABV

Left Hand Brewing Company Milk Stout
Left Hand Brewing Co.
Milk Stout
Milk sugar in your stout is like cream in your coffee. This full bodied sweet stout is dark and delicious. America's great milk stout will change your perception about what a stout can be. An English style cream stout, the milk sugar feeds the yeast to create a creamy mouth-feel with hints of chocolate and coffee. -  5.5% ABV and 25 IBUs

Cigar City Brewing Maduro Brown Ale
Maduro is a Northern English-style brown ale with some American affectations. Maduro is higher in alcohol than the common English brown ale and features flaked oats in the malt bill which imparts a silky body and works to mesh the roasted, toasted and chocolate components together in Maduro's complex malt profile. Caramel, toffee, chocolate and hints of espresso are all on display in this complex but approachable brown ale. The end result is a remarkably full-flavored and sessionable brown ale which pairs well with roasted meat, sweet chocolate-based desserts and mild to medium cigars. 5.5% ABV

Peak Organic Brewing Company IPA
This unique India Pale Ale features our favorite hope – Simcoe, Amarillo and Nugget. A generous Amarillo and Simcoe dry hop provide for an assertive, hop-forward nose and front palate. We don't use traditional bittering hops in our IPA, providing nothing but stimulating citrus and floral characteristics. Suggested food pairings include spicy foods, pesto, smoked meats, mild cheddar or mild blue cheese and gorgonzola. 7.2% ABV and 76 IBUs

Peak Organic Brewing Company Hop Noir Black IPA
Hop Noir is a delectable Black IPA, dripping with piney, aromatic Centennial hops. The malt base is dark and rich, anchored by organic black malt. This provides a strong foundation for the extravagant kettle hopping and dry-hopping that this beer experiences. Suggested food pairings include Brie, grilled vegetables, lamb shank and pungent cheeses. 8.2% ABV and 98 IBUs

Beer Ice Cream Float
Shipyard Brewing Company “Smashed Blueberry”
A hybrid between a Porter and a Scotch Ale. This ber has a rich mouth-feel and a body of complex intensity. Upfront, there are noted of coffee and chocolate beautifully accentuated by the aroma of blueberries. The finish features a delicate balance of sweet fruit and dry hops. Pairs well with glazed dick, ribs, BBQ, chocolate and blueberry desserts – or try in a “smashed float” (JBB Note: We DID! … a cup of vanilla ice cream with Shipyard Smashed Blueberry – most decidedly decadent yummers! ) 9.0% ABV

B Nektar Meadery Wildberry Pyment
A “Pyment” (pie-ment)is a mead made with grapes. This one is made with clover honey, shiraz grape juice and natural wildberry concentrate. It is full bodied and semi-sweet. Makes a great sangria or try it over ice as a spritzer. This is B Nektar's most popular mead. 14% ABV

B Nektar Meadery Orange Blossom
Our orange blossom mead is made from the honey of orange and other citrus trees and is aged on American oak. The flavor and bouquet will transport you to warm climates, where citrus groves stretch on for miles and miles. This mead will continue to mature wonderfully in your cellar. 14% ABV

Everything was so good – and undoubtedly, the “Fellowship of the Females” contributed to the positive perception of all the offerings presented by Carol.

After an hour, I texted companion and learned he had just left Shannon's and was resting comfortably on one of the benches arranged around the development. I insisted he come in and he reluctantly agreed, first confirming he would be able to sit somewhere so as not to interrupt the event. Cork and Keg has high-top tables, sofa and love seat combos for their customers, so I told him to get his be-hind in there at once!

I HAD to run up to him to see his first reaction upon entering – and it was priceless! … his open-mouthed staring was reminiscent of the night we met – but now, nearly 20 years later, it was focused on the wide selection of fine and in some cases, rare, craft beer. By the way, I do take pleasure in the fact that after two decades, I still have that same effect on him – don't know why – maybe, I constantly surprise him with my antics!

He jumped to the bar and asked Amanda which of the Terrapin brews she had cold in the cooler behind the bar. I heard a whimper (or was it a gurgle?)  come from him as the list she verbally provided finally got down to Wake-N-Bake Coffee Oatmeal Imperial Stout! …. STOP! .. . speak nary another word! … selection made!

Terrapin describes the Wake-N-Bake:

“Black as night, this coffee stout is thick, rich and full of real coffee flavor. Brewed with the Terrapin Wake-n-Bake coffee blend created by Terrapin & Jittery Joe’s Coffee. The high content alcohol of these beers make them perfect for cellaring…hide them away and pull one out for a special event 2-3 years later.

ABV: 8.6%
IBU’s: 50
O.G.: 20.8
Malt: 2- Row Pale Malt, Flaked Oats, Flaked Barley, Chocolate Malt, Black Malt & Roasted Barley
Hops: Chinook, Northern Brewer
Coffee: Premium blend of Costa Rican, Guatemalan, & Zimbabwe : Premium blend of Costa Rican, Guatemalan, & Zimbabwe
Without a doubt, this is companion's favorite – and is certainly one of mine. The smooth and robust coffee flavor mixed with the oats, barley and malts gives it that sweet taste which is so mesmerizing.  A great end-of-your-prowl selection – I suggest having a nice dinner and follow up with a Wake-N-Bake for dessert!

I was still sluggin' – I mean, sampling, all the fine brews Carol was slingin' about – but by the time companion had finished his Wake-N-Bake, the event had drawn to a close. I brought Kelle over to meet companion since her husband is also a Texas A&M grad. She told us she was going home to quickly grab him (Brad) and come back up since they live just a few blocks away from Cork and Keg.

While she was away, companion and I decided to split Lagunitas Brewing Company's The Censored (aka The Kronic) Rich Copper Ale.

Lagunitas "Censored"
Lagunitas Brewing Company's website says of the Kro.... uh, The Censored: “The original name of this original ale was originally derived from an origin so heinous that we cannot reveal its aboriginal orogeny. Sorry. Actually, it's an easy drinking malty Copper Ale that goes easy on the hops. Whatever. 6.75% ABV” - I noticed a toast and honey accent on this medium bodied ale. I love it and the story behind its name!

No sooner than we had procured The Censored, Kelle and Brad walked in.  Brad and companion introduced themselves and there began a long discussion about Texas A&M, where they used to live (although separated in time by a couple of decades, amazingly had lived on the same floor of the same dorm), and the impact the Aggies move from the Big12 conference to the Southeastern Conference will have on tradition – you know, the stuff guys like to talk about.

Funny, Brad told him he too felt he would be “in the way” if he violated the “man-ban” requirement, so was planning on staying home all evening. Kelle and I left companion and Brad tellin' “Ol' Ag” stories and settled ourselves at one of the several outside tables in front of Cork and Keg.

After “the boys” had sufficiently supplied each other with tales from the Dixie Chicken (link below), a landmark in College Station, they came outside to join us. “The Chicken”, as all Aggies refer to the place, has been around a LONG time, even earlier than when companion went there (*wink*) and he has told me of “the old days” when the menu consisted basically of Lone Star Longnecks, giant dill pickles and crackers. Bar activities included dominoes and … drinkin' ...

Happy to continue on this sidetrack, companion told me he used to get the best burgers at a place called DSP which stood for Dead-Solid-Perfect. - a house converted into a burger joint on the northwest side of the Aggie campus. He remembers on certain Fridays, he would pick up a DSP burger to go and an announcement board would indicate a performer was appearing there later in the evening who had the same last name as the name on the personalized license plate of the late-model maroon Mercedes parked in the dorm's parking lot. (easy to spot he said amidst the old pickups and dented sedans). The last name was “Lovett” (Lyle being the first name, by the way). He never met him or heard him perform (too busy chasin' skirt, I believe) – but the legend of DSP lives on.

In speaking with Kelle and Brad, we learned of their background and the amazing story of how they relocated their family from Texas. We are excited we have met this beer-centric couple! … great family and outgoing, they are quite popular with the crowd at Cork and Keg!

The event was a smashing success! … what a tremendous evening! … it was difficult pulling ourselves away from Kelle & Brad and the rest of the fine folks we met, but it WAS, unfortunately, a school night. My early feminist-like attraction to the women-only tasting had evaporated in the mix of hops and malts, so I gladly accepted companion's gentlemanly gesture of opening my door and making sure I was safely buckled in. Besides, “the Age of Chivalry has no end” and more significantly, there remains a “little princess” in all of us grown-up girls.

My heartfelt appreciation to Carol Lowrey Graham from Brown Distributing, Amanda from Cork and Keg, Kelle and Brad for providing a most memorable … and perfect ... Jax Brew Bitch evening!

Mississippi Soon to get Stronger Beer!

Jax Brew Bitch Out of State News ... Mississippi Soon to get Stronger Beer!
Congrats Mississippi!

A bill headed to the Mississippi governor would allow the sale of stronger beer in the state, including some craft beers that have been unavailable because of current regulations.

Senate Bill 2878 would permit the amount of alcohol by weight in beer to be raised from 5 percent to 8 percent.

The bill passed the House on Tuesday with no debate. It had passed the Senate on March 12.

It was not immediately clear whether Gov. Phil Bryant will sign the beer bill into law.

Democratic Sen. John Horhn of Jackson says Mississippi's current beer regulations are the strictest in the nation. He says some people are driving out of state to buy stronger brews, and that's causing Mississippi to lose some tax revenue.

UPDATE: The governor signed the bill! - to be effective starting July 2012

Congratulations, Mississippians! … now get busy brewing!

Riverside, O'brother's and shuckin' and a jivin'

Greg and the JBB

Our friend from out of town, Greg, was arriving Friday  (March 30) and we had made plans to meet the group at Riverside Liquors (1035 Park Street) where a whiskey tasting was being held. We were rather late in getting there and it was apparent the girl heading up the tasting was ready to leave.

At the bar, it was a much better experience! … Scott was once again our bartender and his mannerisms and personality impressed our friend Greg enough for him to declare Scott a “first-rate bartender”. Companion and I shared a Sierra Nevada Bigfoot Barleywine Style Ale. WOW! … every time I have one of these, I am pleased. Full-bodies hop jolt, bitter but smooth, this is a consistent favorite of mine. The 9.6% ABV and 90 IBUs make this fine nectar one you can linger with.

Sierra Nevada describes the Bigfoot: “Our award-winning barleywine boasts a dense, fruity bouquet, an intense flavor palate and a deep reddish-brown color. Its big maltiness is superbly balanced by a wonderfully bittersweet hoppiness”

Riverside Liquors is a great place – a fairly new haunt of mine. Thanks to Scott and the others at Riverside Liquors for creating and maintaining the perfect ambiance for a Jax Brew Bitch experience!

Greg liked Riverside Liquors so much, he wanted to stay – but the group was starving, so we headed out in search of food. Being omnivorous, companion and I were open to anything – and the group settled on O'Brothers Irish Pub (1521 Margaret Street), walking distance from Riverside Liquors.

Needing a large table for the entire gang, we were seated in the rear of the establishment. The walls are a unique façade of some type of cloth and the banging around of what sounded like beer kegs “behind” the walls was a little annoying – hard to carry on a conversation.

O'Brothers  has a respectable selection of beer on tap – a little more pricey than I was expecting, but not unrealistic. Companion and I shared a large order of their Fish and Chips ($12.95) described on their menu: “Icelandic cod fried in a light batter with a load of fries, served with tartar sauce and curry. Don't forget the malt vinegar!”

O'brother's Fish & Chips
The flavor was good but the portions were disappointing - probably due to the gargantuan amount you get at Kickback’s Gastropub – which is our favorite Fish and Chips thus far. The load of fries was a light load but tasty, as well. Overall, the meal was fine – just not a great value.

To be fair, one of our group selected the Buffalo Chicken Sandwich and it looked like half a chicken piled on it. If I go back, that's what I'll order.

Killer Deep Fried Pickles
& Green Room's Head High
We had been there before (pre-Jax Brew Bitch) for a quick drink and “Scotch Eggs” ($4.95). The listing on the menu would indicate to new patrons a plurality of eggs. Unfortunately, it was just one egg sliced into pieces – again, very good but not a value.

We left O'Brothers and ended this Prowl at a friend's house in the area, sharing some beer and fellowship.

O'Brothers is obviously a popular place and I'll probably return – just being very selective in my choices – to stretch the Jax Brew Bitch Prowling dollars.

Mile Marker Growler
with oysters

The next day (Saturday, March 31) was spent preparing the house and other food items for the Oyster Party at my house to start later that afternoon. Our good friend Tina sprang for the oysters and Theresa and Marco picked them up from J.C.'s Fresh Seafood (1347 Cassat Ave – 904.389.8771). We had purchase oysters there before for the Mardi Gras party I hosted earlier this year. The oysters are very good – fresh and salty – just as I like them. The staff there at J.C.'s are spectacular – being very respectful and exceedingly helpful!

You can also pull up a chair and eat right there, if you wish! … a great place to get your seafood, give them a try!

Bold City Growler
with oysters
We enjoyed having all the gang at the house – plus, they brought growlers from Mile Marker Brewery and Bold City Brewery! … WooHoo! … talk about a perfect pairing!

Although not “On the Prowl”, the fellowship, food and beer made this a very memorable Jax Brew Bitch evening!

Stone Brewing tasting at Engine 15, Euro St. Green Room and exploding cheeseburgers

Stone's Oak Aged Arrogant Bastard
and Stone's Russian Imperial Stout

The next evening (Wednesday, March 28),  we were on our way EARLY to Engine 15 for the Stone Brewing Company tasting. Having arrived a little late for the last tasting there, we had arranged our day to make sure we were there right at the start. You know, “The early Brew Bitch captures the stout” and all.

When we arrived, we noticed Dave Rigdon (Champion Brands – Team Hopheads) and James from Team Hopheads already set up and providing samples of Stone's Cali Belique Belgian Style IPA, Oak Aged Arrogant Bastard, Ruination IPA and Russian Imperial Stout.

Stone describes these brews, per their website:

Cali Belique Belgian Style IPA
“When reading the name "Stone Cali-Belgique IPA", "Cali" hints that it is a California-style IPA, and this brew has an undeniable Belgian influence, indicated by the word "Belgique" (which is how Belgium's French-speaking population says the word "Belgian"; the Dutch-speaking Belgians say "België"). We carefully selected a Belgian yeast strain that illuminates a fascinating new aspect of the beer that is otherwise quite simply Stone IPA. The result is both completely new and different, while still being recognizable as a Stone brew—and Stone IPA in particular. Think of it as an otherwise identical twin to Stone IPA that was raised in a Belgian culture. Literally.” - Notes: 6.9% ABV, 77 IBUs

Oak Aged Arrogant Bastard
“This is an aggressive beer. You probably won’t like it. It is quite doubtful that you have the taste or sophistication to be able to appreciate an ale of this quality and depth. We would suggest that you stick to safer and more familiar territory --- maybe something with a multi-million dollar ad campaign aimed at convincing you it’s made in a little brewery, or one that implies that their tasteless fizzy yellow beer will give you more sex appeal. Perhaps you think multi-million dollar ad campaigns make a beer taste better. Perhaps you’re mouthing your words as you read this.

Too many strive towards complacency as a goal. We grow up thinking that the ability to become complacent is the equivalence of success in life. True Arrogant Bastards know that this could not be further from the truth. The real beauty, richness and depth in life can only be found if the journey through life itself is looked upon as a constant chance to learn, live and find life’s passion. Passion threatens the complacent, and fills them with fear. Fear of the new, the deep and the different. We, on the other hand, seek it out. Endlessly, joyously...and aggressively. To this end we bring you the “OAKED Arrogant Bastard Ale.” Another reward for those seeking new sources of passion, and another point of dissension for those who are not.”  -

Stone Imperial Russian Stout
“Brewed in the authentic historical style of an Imperial Russian Stout, this beer is massive. Intensely aromatic (notes of anise, black currants, coffee, roastiness and alcohol) and heavy on the palate, this brew goes where few can - and fewer dare even try. The style originated from Czarist Russia's demand for ever thicker English stouts. Expect our version of this mysterious brew to pour like Siberian crude and taste even heavier! “ - Notes: 10.5% ABV, 65 IBUs

Stone Ruination IPA
“So called because of the "ruinous" effect on your palate! This massive hop monster has a wonderfully delicious and intensely bitter flavor on a refreshing malt base. One taste and you can easily see why we call this brew "a liquid poem to the glory of the hop!" Those who seek, crave and rejoice in beers with big, bold, bitter character will find true nirvana in Stone Ruination IPA! “ - Notes: 7.7% ABV, 100+ IBUs

Of course, I have always been a fan of the Russian Imperial Stout – strong, a lot of body. The Ruination IPA has that hop jolt I adore and is very smooth. The Celi Begian gave me the impression of “spicy banana”. The Oak Aged Arrogant Bastard was WOW! ... an amazing mix of bitter citrus and pine with oak. All were phenomenal, however.

Due to the motivation gained from the tasting, companion ordered a pint of the Russian Imperial Stout and I had an Oak Aged Arrogant Bastard. Mission accomplished for Team HopHeads!

Engine 15's Empanadas
ASK FOR THEM!
Jason, tap room manager from the Green Room had suggested we try Engine 15's empanadas. Although not on the menu, you can ask for them when placing your order.

The empanadas were amazing – Jason was so right! … others at our table started ordering them once they saw us inhaling them. Some even ordered a second helping.

Others joining us at our table that evening included Marc from Springfield Brew Crew and Kristi, Danny, his neighbor John and Ian who we met at Intuition Ale Works.

Another afternoon of great beer and fellowship with good folks!

Thank you to David Rigdon and James from Team Hopheads and the crew at Engine 15 for a memorable Jax Brew Bitch experience!

Danny was heading out of Engine 15 (after two orders of empanadas!) and casually mentioned he was bound for European Street where it was still Happy Hour! ... we were soon " Green Flag Racin' " just down the street to  the European Street Cafe (992 Beach Blvd).

Danny was at the bar as we arrived and Ryan was our friendly and experienced bartender. I knew I wanted another Kasteel Rouge, a delicious nectar I had frist tried just a few days earlier (see earlier blog post). Companion locked in on the tap indicating Terrapin Beer Company's Hopsecutioner was "in the house"!

We also met some of the other patrons, including Rich. Rich lives locally and serves our country in active duty with the military. He also loves beer!

I think it was Danny who started floating around a glass of the St. Bernardus Abt. 12 – also available on tap. I was feeling "very European" indeed guzzling ... uh ... I mean sipping both the Kasteel Rouge and St. Bernadus Abt. 12. Companion said something about the "night we met" and "always loving a two-fisted drinkin' gal" ... but I attributed that to the tasty, award-winning Hopsecutioner he was inhaling.

Terrapin's website includes the following info on that brew:

"This Killer IPA earns its name by using six different types of hops while still remaining an aggressive well balanced beer."

Malt: 2 Row Pale Malt,Munich, Pale Crystal 24L, Victory
Hops: Warrior, Chinook, Centennial, Simcoe, Amarillo, Cascade (dry hop)
Awards: Gold Medal- 2010 Atlantic City Beer Festival (India Pale Ale)
ABV: 7.3%
IBU’s: 78

Okay, the empanadas companion and I had shared were wearing off ... our fellow patrons were applauding the growls being generated by our rather empty stomachs, so we knew it was time to eat.

I was able to swat the freakin' Fried Fairy away and we ordered (descriptions per their menu):

Blue Max ($8.50) - "Smoked pastrami and hot mustard, corned beef, melted Swiss cheese, sauerkraut and blue cheese dressing. Served hot.”

and

Muffaletta ($8.50) - “Ciabotta bread filled with ham, Genoa salami, provolone, Swiss cheese, olive oil and olive salad mix. Served hot”

The Blue Max was the perfect sandwish to pair with the St. Bernardus! ... I love the blue cheese dressing!

The Muffaletta was delicious – and I am very partial to the original prepared daily at Central Grocery in New Orleans. The olive oil salad mix differs from that in the Crescent City, but it is unique and tasty!

As I posted in my blog a few days ago, the descriptions of the Kasteel Rouge and St. Bernardus Abt. 12 included  here again;

Kasteel's rather unique website contains this description for the Kasteel Rouge - “Castle Red is the fruit beer of the Castle range. Its unique dark red colour is obtained by mixing Castle brown that has been left to mature for at least 6 months with sour cherries. This beer has gastronomic qualities and can be drunk as an aperitif, with a BBQ, to accompany a dessert or simply as an outstanding real ale.

The website for St. Bernardus declares: “The absolute top quality in the hierarchy of the St. Bernardus beers. It is also the beer with the highest alcohol content (10.50 %). A dark ivory coloured beer with a high fermentation.
The show piece of the brewery. Thanks to its soft and unconditionally genuine aroma, the beer can be smoothly tasted. The Abt has a very fruity flavour.”

Thanks to Ryan and European Street Cafe – Jax Beach for providing the perfect setting for a memorable Jax Brew Bitch experience!

Jason & Christine at
Green Room Brewing
Danny was taking his leave of our group and we decided to venture forth on this Prowl to the Green Room Brewing's Tap Room (228 3rd Street North, Jax Beach). Bidding farewell to Ryan and Rich, we skipped on over there.

Upon entering, we were pleased to see Christine and Jason, Tap Room Manager. We let him know how right he was about Engine 15's empanadas and ordered pints of their Undertow Orange Blossom Barleywine and Shaka Oatmeal Stout.

Sweet, precious Diamond
The Shaka is somewhat sweet with a strong coffee influence. The Undertow was brewed with local orange blossom honey and has a noticeable citrusy body with what I perceived as honey and oak notes..

We had convinced Marc and Kristi to join us and we were easily able to carry on conversations owing to the sparse crowd at this late hour on a “school-night”.

Thanks to Christine and Jason for indulging our questions and extended discussions! … they are the best!

Exploding Cheeseburger from
Philly's Finest Ice Bar
Exiting Green Room, for some reason (was it the Kasteel Rouge at European Street?), I was reminded of my ballet days as a little girl – so, I “couru”-ed myself to the Jeep. Climbing in, who else but the freakin' Fried Fairy had appeared once again. Unable to swat effectively, that fairy had the nerve to challenge me to eat the “Exploding Cheeseburger” at Philly’s Finest Ice Bar (1527 North 3rd Street, Jax Beach).

We were pleased and impressed Philly’s Finest Ice Bar was still open and still serving burgers! … their menu describes the “Exploding Cheeseburger” as:

“Our “2-Wheeler” stuffed down the middle with extra, extra cheddar cheese sauce - $7.99” … extra-extra cheddar cheese sauce? … well then, “bring-it-on - bring-it-on” !

We ordered a pint (to share) of Bold City Brewery's Dukes Cold Nose Brown Ale described on their website as: “This is a mild brown ale which is easily drinkable. A Slight nuttiness and sweetness are present.”

The Exploding Cheeseburger was fabulous! … Served in two halves open-faced, it was a perfect substantial meal to share. Jacque was once again our gracious bartender/server and she did a great job.

Having embarked at such an early hour that day, it was sadly time to call an end to this Jax Brew Bitch Prowl – thank you to Jacque and Philly’s Finest Ice Bar for providing the perfect conclusion to this very exciting day!

The freakin' Fried Fairy was chuckling at me while winking once and disappearing from my shoulder on my way to the Jeep. Contentedly strapped into my seat and quickly falling to sleep, I realized THAT fairy is really not such a bad fairy, after all.
