I had been impatiently checking the clock - and my watch
- daily, awaiting the opening of Beer:
30, so I was ever so happy when I learned they had opened their doors at 1271
King Street (904.388.0033 ) just a few doors down from Pele's Wood Fire.
Starting a new business in this economy is bold indeed, but I believe
owners Justen Mann and Warren Fryefield
knew exactly what they were doing when they located their venture along
Jacksonville's “Beer Boulevard”, King Street.
Warren Fryefield & Justen Mann |
Justen and Warren have joined their passion for quality beer
and their entrepreneurial spirit to segment the suds market by providing
something novel for that stretch of King Street – an impressive collection of
bottled craft beer for sale to the public. Genius! … companion and I often discuss
how we would like to go buy a bottle of something we have just enjoyed from the
multitude of tap selections from the various places we visit on my Prowls. Once
outside and heading home or another destination, we log it into foggy memory - hoping to recall it the next time we are
shopping - and seldom do.
Another strategic decision by the owners was to keep their
business open late – making it very easy to drop in to see if they have a
bomber (or six-pack) of the tasty draft brew you just downed at one of the
local pubs.
For instance, hours today are from 11:00 am until 2:00 am.
WooHoo! … just like a bar!
Companion and I hopped in there on Friday (June 8) for my
first visit. We were greeted cheerfully by Warren and Justen as soon as we
entered and I was impressed with how they had decided to display the
significant collection of available craft beer.
Shelves filled with a vast assortment of craft beer make for
enjoyable browsing and ease in making your selections. A cooler near the rear
of the business keeps some of the available beers chilled for “quicker”
gratification!
Justen and Warren were kind enough to take a few minutes to
discuss the thought process of site selection, their plans for the future and
their hopeful anticipation of a soon-to-be-secured permit for sampling beer -
*fingers crossed*
After walking through Beer: 30's offerings a couple of
times, I finally decided upon the following interesting brews (descriptions per
breweries' websites):
Magic Hat Elder Betty Elderberry Weiss
“The wisdom of ages hangs sweet and free from the
branches of Elder Betty's elderberry tree. She is the matriarch of the summer
sun, the spirit in our bare dancing feet, and the healer of cold weather
wounds. Listen for her on warm waves and winds, as the joy of a thousand
lifetimes flows from the earth through her branches, and drink her offering
with ecstatic abandon.
Elder Betty is a weiss-style ale with bready malt flavor
balances by a touch of hops and complemented by the tart berry flavors of
elderberry.”
Mad River Brewing Company Steelhead Double IPA
“Maltier, hoppier and more robust in
flavor than regular IPAs, Double IPA is dry hopped with Amarillo hops for
a fresh citrus flavor and aroma. Goes great with red meats and life in
general. Does not go well with driving or machinery.” Note: 8.6% ABV
Blue Point Brewing Company Hoptical Illusion
“We won’t go as far as saying you’ll see things after
partaking in a few, but one or two will leave you craving more. Ancient
Egyptians stuffed their pillows with fresh hops, believing the hop’s aroma
brought on intense, vivid dreams. Today, our classic, American-style India Pale
Ale (IPA) features a rare hop grown exclusively on a small farm in Oregon. One
taste and you’ll understand why we bought the entire crop. Our Hoptical
Illusion IPA is brewed with a generous amount of this select hop that’s added
five different ways for maximum hop flavor. The delicious, resiny, citrus-burst
that you taste is the “Essence of the Hop” which is balanced by a malty backbone
yielding an intense, golden ale. Hoptical Illusion tantalizes beer lovers’
taste-buds, while its colorful, psychedelic packaging is candy for the eyes.” -
Note: 6.8% ABV – 60 IBUs
Shipyard Brewing Company Monkey Fist IPA
“Like the image suggests, Monkey Fist IPA is edgy,
aggressive, and unique in style. This beer is an American IPA that is brilliant
copper in color and exploding in Warrior, Glacier and Cascade hop character but
is able to maintain a beautiful balance.
Recommended food pairings include Buffalo shrimp, aged
cheddar, smoked duck, blackened fish, Cajun; baked beans – Note: 6.9% ABV
Cocoa Beach Brewing Company “Not Just Some” Oatmeal
Stout
“Made with two-row pale malt, dark chocolate malt, black
malt, and flaked oats - this rich stout is brewed with twelve additions of
Fuggle hops. Originally Just Some Oatmeal Stout, the name was changed by
popular demand as this truly is unlike any ordinary stout! “
I can sense Warren and Dusten will be those effective type
of business owners who listen to their customers – those proactive
entrepreneurs who make doing business with them a pleasure. Certainly, I am
going back to Beer: 30 – probably even tonight. Please show your support for
their venture – get your “beer face” on and pop on down there to see Warren and
Dusten and grab some tasty brews for your enjoyment at home.
Welcome, Beer :30 to the Greater Jacksonville Brews and
Chews scene! … it's about time!
My heartfelt thanks to Warren and Justen for taking the time
to speak with me about their business and suggestions for my beer selections -
and for stepping to the plate in providing yet another unique venue – one which
will definitely be included in future Jax Brew Bitch Prowls!
