The
ladies of Intuition Ale Works (Cari Sanchez-Potter, Robin Rutenberg and Hannah
Greer) have brewed a Bavarian
Schwarzbier (Black Lager) with 3 types of peppers (anchos, guajillos and
chipotles) to add smokiness and spice tones to the profile. They have given it
the name "Siren" or "the Siren Schwarzbier."
The
beer will be tapped on May 5th, Cinqo de Mayo, at Intuition - there will be a
themed fiesta!
The beauties behind the "Siren" Hannah, Cari and Robin |
Throughout
the month of May, $1 from every pint sold will go to benefit Girls Rock
Jacksonville, a local non-profit girls summer camp that helps girls realize
their musical and individual potential! The camp is 1 week long and will be
held in August. The showcase for the camp will be at the Florida Theater!
Intuition
Ale Works is marking the entire month with celebrations of women. They will
have Mother's Day Brewquets for sale through the 11th that will be available
for $40 (they will include 1 quart of the Siren beer, 1 Siren t-shirt, 2 pint
glasses, Mother's Day Beer Koozie, sticker and something for those with a
sweet-tooth!
They
will also be holding a beer seminar, presented by and for ladies, on Tuesday,
May 15th. Their new lady brewer (maybe the first lady brewer in Jax!) will do a
Q&A and beer tasting from 6-8 pm. There will be a limited admission of 30
guests.

The
month's finale will end in a Girls Rock fundraiser on Sat, May 26th from 6-9
pm. It will be a big event, with Intuition turning the brewery bar into a
ladies lounge with live music, pedi’s/mani’s, salon, photo station, etc.
Hmmmm
… “Siren” – legend holds they were were dangerous beautiful
creatures who lured nearby sailors with their enchanting music and voices to
shipwreck on the rocky coast of their island. Well, Cari, Robin and Hannah are
indeed beautiful - and only dangerous if they need to be! … it’s easy to see
their powers of temptation manifested by the number of customers filing in
through their doors. Yes, I believe they selected a very appropriate name!
Earlier,
I had asked Robin Rutenberg, one of the ladies brewing up “Siren”, a few
questions about their inspiration and background:
JBB: Will this be something you girls will be doing
from time to time in the future?
Robin: We all thoroughly enjoyed the process of
brewing our own beer - choosing the style, ingredients, doing the heavy labor -
and we will definitely brew in the future, but probably not on this scale again
for some time. Each of us is investing in home brew kits to get more experience
and knowledge of the brewing process.
JBB: Who's idea was it?
Robin: Our Brewmaster and owner, Ben Davis. Women
were the first to brew beer and he wanted to integrate the ladies of Intuition
in every step of the process!
JBB: Have any of you
brewed beer at home before?
Robin: Not yet, but we are all starting now!
JBB: Did y'all consult
with Ben, Andrew or any other brewers in deciding the ingredients?
Robin: We decided the style and ingredients
ourselves and they helped with the measurements to ensure it had the flavor we
were going for. Andrew overlooked and guided us through the brewing process.
JBB: When did each of
you start truly appreciating craft beer over the mass-produced commercial beer?
Robin: For
Cari, it was when she lived in Australia to study Gastronomy. There were lots
of locally brewed beverages and pairing was key for her studies. For Robin, it
was also when she went abroad, but to Bamberg, Germany. There were 12 local
breweries in the small town she lived in and she loved the jovial climate of
beer gardens and endless beer styles. Hannah was simply beer-curious and
started drinking around : )
JBB: Will your brew be
sold in pints or growlers?
Robin: Both! We will only be selling it from
Intuition's tap room. Also, throughout the month it is tapped, for every pint
sold Intuition will donate $1 towards a local non-profit start-up called Girls
Rock Jacksonville! GRJ is a week-long summer camp for girls ages 9-16 that aims
to empower young girls through music. They learn to play either guitar, bass,
keyboards, drums or sing, form bands, learn to screen print their band's logo
onto shirts, and at the end of the week will have their musical
"showcase" at The Florida Theater!
JBB: Will guys like it?
Robin: This is no docile beer! Any beer enthusiast/appreciator
should love this beer. It will be a Schwartzbier, a Bavarian style black lager,
with smokey and spicy peppers! It'll have just the right amount of sass!
JBB: What food do you
think it would pair well with?
Robin: It would definitely pair well with meat
dishes, Mexican/spicy food, and chocolate desserts! It'll be a very drinkable
dark beer, so really anything!
JBB: Do you have any
advice for the women out there that want to begin crafting their on brew?
Robin: Just start doing it! The kits are available
on tons of websites and any beer magazine has beaucoup recipes. There's nothing
stopping you!
My
heartfelt appreciation to Robin Rutenberg, Cari Sanchez-Potter and Hannah Greer
for their input about “Siren”! … by the way, if you are not already aware,
Robin is an accomplished musician and appears with her band at various
locations and functions. Be sure to check out her website and Facebook page
linked below!
Jacksonvillians,
let’s all get out and support the efforts of Cari, Robin and Hannah, Intuition
Ale Works and Girls Rock Jacksonville – three groups making our community a
great place to live!
