Filling up at The Garage ... when in need of something new and different.

Jenine, Joey and Bree at the Garage on Post St., Jax, FL
Do you find yourself looking for something “different” from time to time? … living on a Caribbean island for years can certainly bring on “rock fever” and when that would hit us while living in St. Croix, we would fly over to St. Thomas for a couple of days – not for the beach (though Magens Bay Beach is in the world's top 10) – not for the accommodations (though Sugar Bay Beach Resort and Frenchman's Reef & Morningstar Beach Resort are spectacular) – and not for the food (though Northside Bistro will knock your socks off) – but for the sake of enjoying something different.

In St. Croix, we could reach the beach in less than 2 minutes by walking, within 15 minutes (driving) be enjoying Goliath-sized rock lobsters from Junie's Bar & Restaurant, within 20 minutes gorging on an AUCE buffet Sunday Brunch at the Carambola Beach Resort  – but after awhile, even these now-cherished experiences took on the sallow pallor of the mundane. Color me jaded at the time.

By taking a small seaplane ride to St. Thomas, we could visit the Hard Rock Cafe (which closed in 2005), catch the $3 ferry over to the island of St. John to shop at Mongoose Junction and have a rum & coke at Pusser's Restaurant  (closed near the end of 1999 after a fire) and enjoy a great meal at ….. Taco Bell. Yes, Taco Bell – we didn't have one in St. Croix but there was one location in St. Thomas (now closed) near the high school and we made sure we got our “refried bean fix” during each visit.

The reason we got so excited for Taco Bell and the other activities was that they were “different” that those we could enjoy on our “home rock” of St. Croix.

So, I found myself in that mood Friday (May 25) as companion and I discussed possibilities for that evening's Prowl. I wanted something “different” and “out of the norm”. He was in early from week-long training and I was searching through fliers and coupons trying to come up with economical brews and chews destinations.

Companion suggested that we possibly try The Garage, a recently opened bar at the corner of King Street and Post Street – a block from Kickbacks Gastropub. His idea had merit, I thought – something different, for sure … and a destination we had been considering the previous week.

I texted our friend Tina and we were excited she indicated she would join us. We were also pleased that another friend Peggy informed us she would be there, as well.

The Jeep “has a hitch in its get-along”, as companion says, so we took The Beast – his old but reliable pickup. Since his truck does not have the same innate homing sense to the Kickbacks area as the Jeep,  companion had to maneuver the vessel over to The Garage and moor it in one of the parking places in front of the establishment.

We first thought it was all in an open-air environment from its appearance outside, but upon entering, we noticed there is a large enclosed climate controlled (read that as air-conditioned) portion. The late afternoon breeze was quite pleasant though as we chose our seats and sat at the bar. We were seated between a young gentleman from Orlando (who works for Hard Rock Corporate coincidentally) and a local couple-in-love discussing the young man's upcoming wedding and plans for their own. Everyone was quite friendly and I wish the two couples represented there that evening the very best.

Something “different” presented itself to us when we noticed The Garage has a food menu! … and the prices are VERY reasonable. On top of that, we noted they have several brews on tap including some from Intuition Ale Works, Bold City Brewery and Orlando Brewing Company!

I ordered Intuition Ale Works very popular I-10 IPA described on Intuition's website:

“The West Coast comes to Jax with this extremely hoppy, true India Pale Ale. Our two-row malted barley and caramel malt come to life with a half-ton of Northwest hops. We use 4 different hops during the brewing process and during dry hopping. It’s music to your nose.”
JBB Notes: A Jacksonville favorite and certainly one of mine!

Orlando Brewing Co. Organic Pale Ale
Companion ordered Orlando Brewing Company's Organic Pale Ale – because a friend of ours from Orlando, Mad Dog, the BT, said he is soon going to visit that brewery.

The Organic Pale Ale is described on the Orlando Brewing Company's website:

Description: An All-American beer. American organic grown malts, zesty American grown hops and the American ale yeast clearly identify this beer as homegrown. Refreshingly hoppy, pale yet tan and complex maltiness epitomize what this pale ale has brought to the American beer culture. Crisp, clean, sassy and complex, American ale at it finest.
Aroma: Enticing hop aroma from late kettle additions of American hop varieties.
Appearance: Amber gold.
Flavor: American hops lend a unique balance to the commanding malt flavor. Organic caramel flavors and fresh “baked bread” flavors are evenhanded with the full malt taste.
Mouthfeel: Refreshing and lightly carbonated. Long lasting rock head and thirst-quenching flavor.
History: An American adaptation of English pale ale.
Comments: In the past, this ale was known as American amber ale.
Ingredients: American organic two-row pale ale malt, American organic Crystal and CaraPilsner malts all mixed to give a considerate body. Truly American Cascade hops, lend a citrusy flavor.
Note: 6.4% ABV – 16 IBUs
JBB Notes: Another “something different! … I'm not really a big Pale Ale fan but THIS one was quite surprising and tasty! … the malt/hop combo combines to provide a full-flavored and refreshing Pale! … I will DEFINITELY be adding this to my fav list …

The Garage Chicken Philly
Now with great brews in hand (and gullet!), I surveyed the impressive menu. My eyes kept returning the “Garage Chicken Philly” - $8.99 and companion and I decided to share this selection.

Tina then arrived, followed not too long after by Peggy. They ordered and split the Tuna Sandwich which looked amazing and they said was very good.

Our pleasant, knowledgeable and efficient bartender and server, Jenine, soon brought our food – WOW! … a heaping sandwich of rotisserie chicken and caramelized onions, grilled mushrooms, bacon and melted pepper jack cheese served with chips and their “secret sauce” … the sauce was incredible and I attempted to pry the recipe from Bree but she informed me the chef keeps that a secret from them, as well.

I ventured over to the enclosed section of the establishment – upscale, clean and inviting, the ambiance is quite appealing. I look forward to another visit in the near future!

This was an all-around spectacular experience at The Garage! … great service, great food and great beer!

Thanks to Jenine, Bree, the crew and management of the Garage for providing a different and memorable Jax Brew Bitch experience!

My yearning for “different” had been dealt with by “The Garage”, so I was very happy to get back in our recent routine of heading out to Engine 15 Brewing Company (1500 Beach Boulevard – Jax Beach – 904.249.2337) since I was in the running for the Mai Queen title along with three other girls.

I felt I needed to “work the crowd” since each pint purchased allowed the buyer to request one ticket to vote for the Mai Queen of their choice. Since it was perfectly legal to “vote often”, companion and I did our part to bring voters into Engine 15 to take part in this beer-centered event – and to cast our votes many times – well, I am so civic-minded. Campaigning, I had been promising “A beer in every hand” - as long you buy it, of course.

Once we arrived at Engine 15, we contacted our friend Danny who lives in Jax Beach and let him know we were there. Companion and I ordered and shared Engine 15's Old Battleaxe IPA and Rye of the Tiger.

Old Battle Axe IPA (description per brewerydb.com)
“The Summit hops lend a pronounced pineapple and citrus character to this American IPA, late additions of Northern Brewer, Glacier and more Summit round out the hop profile in this delicious nectar.”

Rye of the Tiger (description per brewerydb.com)
“This amber colored rye beer combines the citrus and floral character of a classic American IPA with the spicy earthy notes of a Rye ale. Hoppy but not too bitter and just enough spice to give you a little “how’s your father?”

Danny arrived soon after we received our beer and he had brought along three friends and co-workers who were in town for the Qualifying Track Meet at the University of North Florida. He introduced us to the three – Randy, Bob and Glenn.

Serving us that evening was Moll, who is such a sweetheart and knowledgeable about the various brews available at Engine 15. One of the owners Andy was also there working alongside Moll and Caleb and the combination of the three was very effective in providing top-notch, effective and personable customer service!

Danny had, weeks ago, introduced me to Kasteel Rouge and he did the same for his friends that evening – and it became … uh … um … let's say “popular” … at our table. During the evening, Randy was kind enough to also buy one for me! … I just love this heavenly nectar!

8 oz. Kasteel Rouge at Engine 15
Kasteel's rather unique website contains this description for the Kasteel Rouge:

Castle Red is the fruit beer of the Castle range. Its unique dark red colour is obtained by mixing Castle brown that has been left to mature for at least 6 months with sour cherries. This beer has gastronomic qualities and can be drunk as an aperitif, with a BBQ, to accompany a dessert or simply as an outstanding real ale.

After a grand time of fellowship with “the boys” (me reminding them throughout the evening to vote with each brew purchased), the late hour forced them to call an end to their Engine 15 visit since Track Meet duties were on their early morning agenda.

I bid farewell to Danny, Randy, Bob and Glenn, thanking them for their support on this, the last night of voting for Mai Queen. Lastly, I said goodnight to the crew at Engine 15.

Companion secured me within The Beast and we were soon sailing westward on Beach Boulevard – our usual route home.

My sincere appreciation to Moll, Andy and Caleb for making our visit to Engine 15 Brewing Company such a pleasant one on this Jax Brew Bitch Prowl!

I believe it was Elizabeth Arden who said “Repetition makes Reputation and Reputation Makes Customers” - nothing truer could be said of Engine 15 Brewing Company – their steadfast dedication to their customers has brought about their well-deserved exemplary reputation and paves the way for their future continuing success.

On the voyage home in The Beast, I mentioned to companion it would be good to get something to eat. Given the lateness of the hour, I knew little would be open and I really didn't feel like a huge meal – just a “little something” …

As we drove westward along Beach Boulevard, I spotted a Krystal (there's “Nothin' Like it” !  - 8151 Beach Blvd – 904.725.4407) – . yeah, well, you know … sometimes what you need is a bag o' Krystal burgers to soak … uh, I mean, provide that stomach-settling and hunger-satisfying solution!

As we pulled up to the drive-through lane, I was surprised to notice the Freakin' Fried Fairy, enveloped in a Caribbean Java Wrap, sitting atop the large menu board staring at me as companion ordered my six Ranch Chiks and order of fries along with his own six Original Krystal burgers.

As we waited at the drive-through window, the Fried Fairy flew from the menu board and hovered outside my window, dancing a Bomba for some reason and then finally lighting upon my rear view mirror. I lowered the truck window, silently wondering about the source of the miniature attire and asked, “How did you know I was going to be here?” … and before flying and dancing away into the night, that crispy imp responded,  “Because whether in Jeep or Beast, you are always SO predictable” …

Turning back on to Beach Boulevard, I raised the window still contemplating that rather quick odd encounter and started eating my delicious Ranch Chiks. I then looked over at companion … “Well”, I said, “THAT was certainly different”.

My heartfelt appreciation to the following U.S. Virgin Islands establishments and locations for cherished memories – each “different” and wonderful in their own individual way:

Intuition Ale Works 'Ladies Night Out' Beer Tasting and Seminar

The American Medical Association's “Epinephrine Monitoring Meter” hovering over northeast Florida located “Adrenaline Central” for the region, Tuesday (May 15), situated at precisely the same coordinates as my house. I had been asked a few days earlier by Robin Rutenberg of Intuition Ale Works to speak for 5 to 10 minutes at the Ladies Night Out Beer Tasting and Seminar event being held at the brewery later that Tuesday evening. (*gulp*)

The general topic suggested by Robin was “Women in Craft Beer” - and I felt she had selected the perfect subject for me! …  I told companion that Robin had indicated I should speak about ladies swimming around in a big tank of craft beer! … he then explained what she probably meant was the participation in and contributions to the craft beer industry. Yes, that DID make more sense ...

Cari & Robin preparing for the evening
As I realized the event would probably be well-attended, nervousness set in and the adrenaline started pumping. After sketching out an outline for a couple of days, I felt I was fairly close to being ready for the event. The day of the event, I received a confirmation e-mail about my reservation for the evening and it indicated it was “sold-out” - (*hurl*) … gad, my first real experience in public speaking (other than very small groups). I wanted to do well – not only for myself but also for the Ladies of Intuition because I just love them and I respect them for what they are bringing to the forefront there at the brewery.

On the drive over to Intuition around 5:00 pm the day of the event, I was quietly going over my little speech and companion allowed me the solitude during the journey. Approaching the brewery, I told him I would like to enjoy a beer (or two) after the event – to celebrate this very special day for me – and he wholeheartedly agreed. Companion dropped me off with a good-luck kiss and drove away to meet our friends over at Kickbacks Gastropub.
Intuition Ale Works Brewery
Entering Intuition, I noticed Lindsay, Robin and Cari busy with preparations for the event. They were so supportive and excited about the evening and this made me really want to come through for them.

As soon as the guests arrived, each was offered a pint of a brew of their choice and encouraged to mingle and meet others. Then, we were taken in two groups for a tour of the brewing process. Robin lead the tours and let us try the grains that went into the brews while she explained the basic process of how their brewery works.  The tour was culminated with a showcase of their new canning line.

Intuition's latest Brewer,
Jessie Erickson
We then were seated and I was pleased to be at the same table as Cari Sanchez-Potter, Diana Davis and Kathy Corbin. Robin began by introducing Jessie Erickson, the new lady brewer at Intuition Ale Works! … WOW! … an amazingly talented young individual with a bright brew-future!

Robin and Lindsay began pouring the delicious samples of Intuition brews for us to try (descriptions per Intuition's website) while Jessie provided descriptions and the brew process of each one:

Golden Spiral
“A Belgian golden ale brewed with Belgian malts, Czech hops and coriander. Fermented with our house Belgian strain. Spicy, fruity esters and very refreshing. Our gateway beer for those new to Belgian beers.”

Redman
Counter to its mischevous Irish folklore namesake, The Redman is a smooth and enjoyable Irish red. Malty and lightly hopped, this brew is perfect for any drinking session.”

I-10 IPA
“The West Coast comes to Jax with this extremely hoppy, true India Pale Ale. Our two-row malted barley and caramel malt come to life with a ?@!#-ton of Northwest hops. We use 4 different hops during the brewing process and during dry hopping. It’s music to your nose.”

Dubbel Helix
“Belgian dubbel brewed with German hops for bittering, Czech Saaz hops for flavor and aroma, and a variety of Belgian malts. Everything comes together to make for a spicy beer with notes of dark fruit, burnt caramel and bananas.”

The Siren “Schwartzbier”
Brewed by the ladies of Intuition, this sassy schwartzbier has hints of Ancho, Guajillo and Chipotle Peppers. During the month of May, for every pint sold of this enjoyable black lager we will donate $1 to Girls Rock Jacksonville, a local non-profit summer camp helping girls ages 9-16 realize their musical and person potential!”

King Street Stout
Imperial stout brewed with two-row malted barley and a variety of roasted and caramel malts.”

Not only were we enjoying the tasty beverages, we grazed on gourmet cheeses from Grassroots Natural Market, whole grain crackers, fruit and almonds – all provided by Intuition Ale Works. We also had Siren Cupcakes which were made by Baking Under the Influence and owner Violet Skinner had made them and brought them in for the event. Decadent!

In attendance that evening was Girl Meets Beer – a group of fascinating women from the New Smyrna Beach and Daytona Beach areas! … they had made the trip all the way up to Jacksonville for this event – I call that hardcore dedication to beer! … Visit their Facebook page for more information on this intriguing “brew platoon” of women! (https://www.facebook.com/girlmeetsbeer1 ). Heading up the group was Melissa R. and she also had her daughter Samantha with her. I look forward to getting together with this adventurous group in the near future!
The Siren Cupcakes made by
Baking Under the Influence

I was graciously introduced by Robin and I was flattered and encouraged by the warm welcome from the wonderful group of women gathered in the brewery.

Generally outlined as follows, my short presentation included:

-         I spoke of the amazing accomplishments of the Ladies of Intuition with the commercially successful Siren - a Bavarian Schwarzbier they developed themselves.

-         I described the impressive Cicerone certifications recently obtained by Hannah, Robin and Lindsay.

-         I pointed out that owner Ben Davis should be a model for other brewery owners in acknowledging and supporting the efforts of the women involved in craft beer.

-         I mentioned the first woman Master Cicerone -  Nicole Erny and I noted her impressive accomplishments. Since only four Master Cicerones exist, it is remarkable Nicole has achieved that status.

Finally, I noted that there IS a growing presence of women involved in craft beer – and that this presence will manifest itself in the future in more creative ideas, better business and a better all-around industry. Summing it up, I urged the women in attendance to strongly assert themselves in this progressive movement – either as an active business participant or engaged consumer – and to tell any chauvinistic male blocking their involvement:

“Lead, follow or the get the hell out of our way – that rumble you hear is us – and we're on a stampede”

Diana Davis, Cari Sanchez-Potter
Following my little speech, I sat back down and enjoyed more conversation with Cari Sanchez-Potter, Diana Davis and other ladies. Before I left, I saw Brewer Andrew and was able to speak with him briefly to catch up a little since we last spoke. All the ladies in attendance had been invited into the Tap Room at the conclusion of the event and several did just that.

The hovering AMA Epinephrine Meter lost its lock on me as I settled into a contented inner self, still excited and honored to have taken a part in the event, and in the glow of post-presentation relaxation.

Melissa of Girls Meets Beer
I take this opportunity to ask each of you women to “take the fight to the barricades” – become involved in a beer group for women to enhance your enjoyment and knowledge of craft beer – to become more vocal about your questions, comments and suggestions at each beer establishment you visit - and to take the time to thank Ben Davis for choosing to lead the way by focusing on the contributions and talents of the Ladies of Intuition.

Intuition's Lindsay working hard!
My heartfelt appreciation to Robin, Lindsay, Cari Sanchez-Potter and Ben Davis for allowing me this privilege – and to each of the women there that evening who were so kind and supportive. I enthusiastically applaud all of you for taking the time and spending your hard-earned money to be there - you are precious and valued members of this movement – and I personally thank you for impressively - and effectively -  leading the charge!

I called companion and he informed me he was still with our friends Teresa and Marco at Kickbacks Gastropub (910 King Street – 904.388.9551), so he drove over quickly and picked me up while our friends held the table.

It was good seeing Teresa and Marco again – it had been a little while due to everyone's schedules. I was excited to see one of my Ale Angels, Jill serving our table … I knew it would be another spectacular experience at Kickbacks!

I was able to relax a little more with the knowledge my adrenaline-fueled day was drawing to a close. We ordered Kickbacks popular Fish & Chips to split while companion and I shared and enjoyed (descriptions per breweries' websites):

Unibroue Blonde de Chambly
Unibroue Brewery Blonde de Chambly

Here is Unibroue’s own interpretation of traditional Belgian saison ale. Traditionally brewed to help field workers cool off on long summer days, saison ales were highly refreshing—even served warm in the days before refrigeration. Blonde de Chambly pays tribute to the Filles du Roy, the women who came to Nouvelle-France to marry soldiers of the Carignan-Salières Regiment, among others. They settled on the fertile lands defended by Captain Jacques de Chambly and gave birth to many of our ancestors.

JBB Notes: This had been recommended by Intuition Ale Works Brewer Andrew during my discussion with him at the conclusion of the event at Intuition earlier that evening. Very appropriate for tonight – a beer named in honor of women! … my palate experienced a spicy fruit taste in this lighter body Saison. Thank you Andrew for a great suggestion!

Boulder Beer Company's Mojo Risin' Double IPA

“Mojo Risin' Double IPA is a souped up extreme version of Mojo IPA. Brewed with more than a half-ton extra malt and twice the amount of hops – then double-dry-hopped with Amarillo hops for added intensity,

Note: 10% ABV, Amarillo and Centennial hops”

JBB Notes: WOW! … good hop jolt I love – full bodied – a follow-through for me since I had earlier noted it was  a definite future buy for JBB

Kickback's 'go to' Fish & Chips
The Fish & Chips were awesome! … and huge! … of course, it is said “A crust eaten in peace is better than a banquet eaten in anxiety” - and I was certainly at peace inside Kickbacks. The previous anxiety of the day had melted away with the fellowship with our friends and the fine brews I was drinking.

Marco took a small bite of the leftover Fish & Chips and announced he was going to order it the next time they are in. If you have not tried this signature dish of Kickbacks Gastropub, you are missing out on a great value!

Thanks to Jill for wonderful service as always, to Teresa and Marco for their continuing friendship and to Steve Flores and the rest of his crew at Kickbacks Gastropub for consistently being that comfortable “home away from home” I count on during many Jax Brew Bitch Prowls!

"The Siren" from Intuition
Ale Works
As gifts to the attendees of the earlier event at Intuition, the brewery had provided a card entitling the holder to a free pint of one of their tasty brews! … I had received one, so I suggested to companion we boot-scoot back over to Intuition Ale Works (720 King Street – 904.683.7720).

Entering the Tap Room, we were excited to see Hannah behind the bar! … also one of my Ale Angels (along with Robin and Lindsay) her radiant smile and gracious style always makes our visit there an enjoyable one. Hannah had been tasked with Tap Room duties during the event but she had heard all about it from Robin and Lindsay.

Of course, I had to go with the Ladies of Intuition's Siren and companion selected the new Fog Lights … Both described on Intuition's website:

The Siren
Brewed by the ladies of Intuition, this sassy schwartzbier has hints of Ancho, Guajillo and Chipotle Peppers. During the month of May, for every pint sold of this enjoyable black lager we will donate $1 to Girls Rock Jacksonville, a local non-profit summer camp helping girls ages 9-16 realize their musical and personal potential!”

JBB Notes: Fully flavorful with just the right amount of kick!

Fog Lights
“A lightly smoked American ale. We smoked our malts locally at Mojo #4 to create this delightful, light summer ale.”

JBB Notes: I noticed a heavy smoke influence – which I love – smooth, good “end-of-the-evening” brew.

An amazing day for me had finally come to an end and one which was fully satisfying for me. Thanks to Hannah for always delivering professional and friendly service and for being so suppotive that evening. My heartfelt appreciation to Intuition Ale Works for the honor of being involved in their event and for providing the best possible place to end this very memorable - and treasured - Jax Brew Bitch evening.

Kicking-off ACBW at Engine 15 & Poe's Tavern with Highland Brewing Event

Mai Queen nominee proving
 mad skills at
Engine 15 Brewing Company
Alexander Pope was an 18th Century English poet known for his translations of Homer's The Iliad and The Odyssey. It was he who wrote in one of his poems, A little learning is a dangerous thing; Drink deep, or taste not the Pierian spring. …. okay, okay … no, I don't sit around and read poetry all day, but Pope's satire is well-known and his quotes are still used in the modern day.  I became fixated on the “Drink deep, or taste not ...” segment, of course – and decided to apply the concept at the beer tasting event being managed that Tuesday evening (May 14) by Carolyn Lowrey Graham of Brown Distributing at Engine 15 Brewing Company (1500 Beach Boulevard – Jax Beach – 904.249.2337).

We made our way over to Engine 15 early enough so there was an ample supply of beer being provided as samples to those who wished to try the various beers on display. As we entered, I noticed Carolyn speaking with Engine 15 customers and pouring samples, respectively.
Carolyn, JBB, owner & brewer Luch and Chris, miming
The "look away" at Engine 15 Brewing Company
Carolyn was featuring the following beer of the Southeast for American Craft Beer Week from:

SweetWater Brewing Company – Atlanta, GA

Red Brick Brewing Company – Atlanta, GA

Cigar City Brewing – Tampa, FL

Highland Brewing Company – Asheville, NC

Tequesta Brewing Company – Tequesta, FL

Keeping in mind my motivation for the evening, companion and I ordered and “deeply drank” the following Cigar City Brewing offerings (descriptions per Cigar City's website):

Cigar City's Puppy's Breath Robust
Porter & the Minaret ESB on Nitro
Puppy's Breath Robust Porter
Dark in color with a ruby hue with forward notes of chocolate and caramel and light toffee notes in the aroma. Flavor has big notes of bittersweet chocolate with notes of caramel and toffee and moderate hop bitterness and more caramel and toffee and slight hints of char. A big take on a classic style.“ - 8.0% ABV – 40 IBUs

JBB Notes: A robust Porter you'll be barking for! … wonderfully in-your-face smoky chocolate flavor!

Minaret Extra Special Bitter (ESB) On Nitro
Pours amber in color with notes of caramel and slight hints of red delicious apple in the aroma. Flavor has a moderate earthy and herbal hop bitterness followed by moderate caramel notes that are subdued by floral hop bitterness in the finish. A damn good and authentic ESB.“ - 5.0% ABV – 47 IBUs

JBB Notes: Noticed and thoroughly the apple influence in this ESB and maybe a slight floral note. Only the second ESB I have had – definitely looking forward to more of the Minaret and others in the future!

Engine 15 Brewing Company was quite busy that evening but Caleb, Mol and Kevin were, as always, efficient and friendly in their superior service – a great crew, indeed! … Engine 15 continues to excel at knowing what their customers want – and then exceeding the customers' expectations in the delivery!

Although I would like to have stayed longer, commitments beckoned and we needed to head that way. Thank you to Carolyn of Brown Distributing and the crew at Engine 15 Brewing Company for an enjoyable beer-related special event!

A dream within a dream ...
Springfield Brew Crew Marc Wisdom and Kristi had joined us during the beer tasting event at Engine 15 and we were all headed over to Poe's Tavern ((363 Atlantic Blvd - Atlantic Beach – 904.241.7637) for a Highland Brewing event.

The namesake of this establishment, Edgar Allan Poe was once quoted

“Man's real life is happy, chiefly because he is ever expecting that it soon will be so.”

A “high-five” to Edgar because MY life was happy since I was certainly expecting an enjoyable experience at Poe's Tavern because of all the good things we had heard about it!

Our servers, Chris and Blake
with E.A. Poe looking on.
Carolyn had accompanied us in the Jeep over from Engine 15 and she led is into the restaurant. We were courteously directed to the proper table and soon Chris and Blake made their appearance as our friendly, informative and efficient servers for the evening.

The two Highland Brewing Company brews being featured that evening were (descriptions per Highland Brewing's website):

Highland Brewing's Gaelic Ale &
the Little Hump Spring Ale

Little Hump Spring Ale
“Little Hump is an American Pale Ale that is meticulously handcrafted for full floral hop aroma and flavor. Brewed with grains from America's heartland - Simcoe for bittering, Amarillo and Cascade (both dry hopped) for aromatics - this beer finishes crisp and clean.” - 4.5% ABV – 32 IBUs

JBB Notes: Surprisingly strong but not offensive aroma – got past that and it was a very pleasant tasting light bodied ale with enough hop to make me glad I was able to try it! … apparently, the supply in this area is soon going to be gone ...

and

Kirsten demonstrating the Randall
Highland Gaelic Ale
“A deep amber colored American ale, featuring a rich malty body. Cascade and Willamette hops add a complex hop flavor and aroma. This ale is exceptionally balanced between malty sweetness and delicate hop bitterness. It has a universal appeal and is our workhorse, accounting for about half of our total production. The dark amber color is similar to a Scottish Ale but the flavor and body is more in the style of American amber.” - 5.6% ABV – 30 IBUs from the brewery

JBB Notes: Gaelic Amber Ale is a staple at Poe's Tavern but that night they were running it thru a Randal with Cascade hops ladling a little more eye-opening hop to the top! …

As I mentioned, we had heard so many good things about Poe's Tavern, we had to try one of their burgers, so companion and I ordered and shared a Black Cat Burger, described on the Poe's Tavern website:

Poe's Tavern, Black Cat Burger
(please note, no felines were harmed
in the making of this succulent beast)
“Grilled Onions, Edgar's Drunken Chili, Applewood Bacon and Pimiento Cheese” - JBB Notes: be still, my tell-tale heart! … this was incredibly delicious – served with our selection of Hand-Cut French Fries as a side.

I just love the décor of Poe's Tavern – lighting, art and accents combine to make Poe's Tavern a great place for a date. Add to that a significant food menu with top quality selections and a great bar, Poe's Tavern will be a certain hit with the one you're with!

I excused myself to “powder” before we left and I was very impressed with the clean and well-stocked restroom. Companion later confirmed the same was true in the other one, as well.

Edgar Allan Poe is
watching you drink
I must say once inside the ladies restroom, I suddenly had the feeling I had entered the wrong one for I heard a man's voice reading The Raven by Edgar Allan Poe. Visions of a period-suited gentleman reading from a book and standing on a crate in front of the Men’s Room stalls danced in my head! … the unsettling tale stuck with me, though, as I returned to our table. I could not keep from staring at the image of Edgar himself on the wall … his eyes boring holes into my soul … our thoughts linked … our hearts beating in unison ... mesmerized wasn't the word … I …. I ….

“Once upon a midnight dreary, while I traveled home, weak and beery,
Past darkened closing tap rooms and many a shuttered store.
While I nodded, nearly napping, suddenly there came a tapping,
As of some one gently rapping, rapping at my Jeep's front door.
"Tis Tinker Beer," I muttered, "tapping at my Jeep's front door--
Only Tink and nothing more."

Open here I flung the zippered window, when, with many a flirt and flutter,
In there stepped a sexy Fairy of the inebriated days of yore.
Not the least obeisance made she; not a whisper left the lips of she
But, with eyes of mirth at me angled, sat perched upon my dashboard and dangled near my Jeep's front door
Perched upon Hello Kitty just beside my Jeep's front door --
Perched, and sat, and nothing more.

Breaking silence I sought the answer to a vexing I'd encountered sitting up on Poe's Tavern's ladies throne,
A man's voice plainly reading of a Raven not too pleasing, which spoke only one word ripping man to inner core.
I wondered if this was a bad omen – if it meant that tomorrow I would be without any brew – heaven please forbid it to be true -
For the storied ebony winged creature as a demonic and wicked preacher renewed his demented chant of “Nevermore, Nevermore ...”

Tink's head wagged left and right, her eyes dancing prepped for flight,
She stood to speak and spied the open window of my Jeep's front door -
“You worry for no reason for the brews are here all season” said she and then hovered ever closer up to me.
“The day is nigh upon you – on the morrow you'll have some new brew – so, forget that bird, Bitch!” – and then disappeared through the open window of my Jeep's front door – just disappeared and nothing more”

Alexander Pope was SO right – a little learning IS a dangerous thing.

My sincere appreciation to Kirsten Oldham Kelley for a great Highland Brewing Company event and to Chris, Blake and the rest of the crew of Poe's Tavern for making my first visit a very memorable and exciting Jax Brew Bitch experience!

James from Team Hopheads
and Mike enjoying Poe's Tavern
James from TeamHopHeads and his friend Mike were at Poe's Tavern and came by our table to say hello, One thing led to another and we all four decided to head over to Lynch's Irish Pub (514 1st Street North – Jax Beach – 904.249.5181).

This was our first visit to Lynch's and it will certainly not be our last! … I loved it from the minute I walked in – spacious with a good feel to it – amazing bar with a healthy selection of tasty brews to choose from – and a very pleasant server, Alexis!

Companion and I ordered and shared the following two brews (descriptions per breweries' websites):

Angry Orchards Hard Crisp Cider &
Lazy Magnolia's Southern Pecan Nut
Brown Ale
Lazy Magnolia Brewing Company's Southern Pecan Nut Brown Ale

“Southern Pecan Nut Brown Ale is the first beer in the world, to our knowledge, made with whole roasted pecans. The pecans are used just like grain and provide a nutty characteristic and a delightful depth to the flavor profile. This beer is very lightly hopped to allow the malty, caramel, and nutty flavors shine through. The color is dark mahogany. Southern Pecan won a Bronze Medal in the 2006 World Beer Cup in the Specialty Beer category.
Mark is the crazy, creative force behind Lazy Magnolia. He comes up with ideas that often seem to have no chance of succeeding. One of those ideas was to make a beer with pecans. Many attempts at nut-beers have resulted in failure due to the high oil content. Mark was determined, so Leslie designed the recipe to work around the problem of nut oil. Even so, she had very little faith in the creation until they poured the first perfect pint. Southern Pecan has been a big hit ever since.”

Angry Orchard Hard Cider Crisp Apple

Live music at Lynch's Irish Pub
“This crisp and refreshing cider offers sweet apple notes upfront with a subtle dryness at the finish for a balanced cider taste. The addition of Fuji apples adds a layer of complexity and brings out a fresh apple aroma and slightly sweet, ripe apple flavor.” - Note: 5% ABV
“Apple Types: Amere de Berthecourt, Beden, Medaille d’or, Michelin, Binet Rouge, Brairtot Fuji, Golden Delicious, Red Delicious, Joana Gold, Elstar, Granny Smith, Gala, Braeburn”
JBB Notes: Tastes like delicious sweet apple juice – and then provides the wallop you aren't expecting from the 5% ABV

Our visit here was short due to it being a “school night” but I am certainly visiting Lynch's again – when their kitchen is open! … Thanks to Alexis and the bar staff at Lynch's Irish Pub for a delightful first-time experience!
